Just tried it for the first time in ages, think the first time i've ever done it propperly, got to 3 before my hands got extremely sweaty so i had to let go ;\. Think i would be able to get 5.

Depends on the type of pullup you are refering too..

The palms in pullup is just a different form of a curl and in all intents and purposes is about as easy as it gets as long as you arent a fatass. In most communities.. The palms facing you pull up isn't even considered a pullup, and you get made fun of for even doing them at the gym..

As for the other pullup..

Palms out. Arms spread past shoulder width. Thats a mans exercise.. And I suspect that 99% of the forums could not complete 5 reps to save their life.

But if I had to give numbers.. Without swinging, with perfect form and full arm extension I could pop out 20 easily if we are speaking of palm in. Palm out, I'll get 12 on a good day.

True dat. Wide grip is so much harder.

Question: what's a great way to neutralize swinging? Crossing the legs? Or just forcing yourself to go up and down?

Swinging will not occur if you fully extend and pause at the bottom of the pullup. Doing this ensures that you are not using momentum to lift your body.

20, maximum on the Marine Corps physical fitness test. Took me a while to get there though, I joined doing only 3, and stayed at 5 for almost a year. Best advice I can give is just do them, also do an overhand grip and use your back more then an underhand grip using just your biceps. It will be harder at first but trust me, its much easier once you work on it. You're grip shouldn't matter as much, as your arms won't be doing all of the work.

When you get your chin above the bar, drop and use that momentum to just shoot back up. If you are trying to build muscle, do negatives. Don't just drop, but let yourself down slow and feel the burn.

Crossing the legs and not going too fast seems to work for me.

I can probably do around 10 of the "palms in" ones, as for the legitimate ones with the hands far apart I think I could probably do 2.

Yeah, legs crossed but everyone at the gym here does it fast. Watch out for the rookies though, my friend was doing it fast and his legs were swinging around, he nearly kicked me a black eye.

Lenin, when I was in middle school I was a small, skinny kid, but I could still do fifteen pullups. Once I started getting bigger that dropped down to like five. So, no offense, but what you're experiencing is ease of light weight moreso than upper body strength. I thought you were a decent age though... How much do you weigh...? At my first prime I was a little over 100 lbs, but at your age is find it hard to believe you'd be that light.

Yea, that's what I figured. Guess I should enjoy it while it lasts. And I am a scrawny little bugger- 17 years and about 105 pounds.

Guess I'd be one of the lucky 1% who ended up alive, but barely, I did 6 of those just now.

Now I have to ask the question:

Pull-ups, of Chin-ups?

Pull-ups: Maybe 5-7

Chin-ups: 13-15

Wow, I wasn't even that thin four years ago... I'm at 168 pounds at the moment anyway, and 17.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

32, currently.

Used to think I could do 40, but that was when I didn't get my arms down completely straight.

Yeah. We've had this discussion before at some point--

you helped my technique, and by extension the strength that I later developed.

Now I go at 180-degrees, with smooth rise and fall, and relative slowness.

So, thanks for that.

But I don't want to go among mad people!

Oh, you can't help that. We're all mad here..."

11 with arms at a little more than shoulder width apart palms out. I'm still a little sick, but I think I might have over estimated with 20.

  • 2 weeks later...

I can do 12 both arms. It's all in the laterals and back.

3 with only my left arm. 1 with only my right arm.

latissimi dorsi for the plural, latissimus dorsi for the singular. And correct, it's mostly back muscles.

In high school I think I managed to do 14 or 15, but I'm not sure how many I could do now. Back then I was only able to do about 40-45 push-ups in a row at max, but now I could do several sets of 50-55 push-ups, so I might be able to get some where between 16 and 20 pull-ups. I'm a really skinny person, but really strong for my size in comparison to other people.

You're not strong for you're size. You're just lifting less weight because your body is lighter.

I don't really know anything about this, but wouldn't it be proportional then? He's lifting less but he has smaller amounts of muscle because he is smaller in general?
