Greaters than 90%, but that's why you lay more than one egg...

------

Anyways, 5% is with in a poverty stricken country with lots of people dying in famine. You'd think that a fish laying race without people dying in famine would have a higher growth rate.

I said 5% because it's a happy medium. Any higher and people go crazy, and any lower, and people swiftly get annihilated since they don't get enough people.

It isn't for the sake of story, its for the sake of gameplay. Feel free to debate it, but I think that everyone should start with a 5% growth rate which can be improved through research.

I've deprived myself of surface ships and anything aerial because of my growth rate. That was the whole point.

Its late reply time!

That means you can expect them to fail against normal battleships, mind.

If you want sea-superiority, it'd be better to make them more expensive so that they are better quality.

Sea superiority is fairly impossible...consider the Barabary Coast Cosairs.

Anyway I am gonna steal Dusty's(Stolen) idea:

Subs beat Battleships, Battleships beat Destroyers, Destroyers beat Subs....In a 1 on 1 combat anyway.

Carriers beat anything(one on one) but take 50 million Man Hours.

Also, Retech, it's a little unfair that you can basically have your entire population working. There needs to be some major drawback to that.

As well as being able to use your infantry as a navy. There should be some drawback like you suck at fighting on land or something.

I thought you were going to be mainly using humans since your race is obese and lazy....

Okay, so my man-hours are like this:

13,000,000 (20% of population, the ones that can work) * 12 * 365 = 56,940,000,000

And that doesn't look at all right. It probably shouldn't be in the billions, so what did I do wrong?

Agriculture? So half of that. Mining? So 10% of your original figure. Then you should factor consumer goods, public works, building work(Which always takes massive amounts of labour), Ship building, Textile manufacture, Small Arms, Artillery, Infrastructure, Paper Pushing, Banking....the list of jobs is endless. Soliders are obvouisly removed from the calculation.

Also, I think I'm going to put a few million man-hours into researching Air to Depth charges.

I was thinking they'd be approximately the same strength as a battleship, but cheaper since I don't need to keep water out.

And buoyancy means? Metal sinks in water, air rises out....think about it.

Have torpedos been invented yet?

Yup

At the moment, I'll Sky-Depth charges, and that will take 80 million man-hours.

I'll also start research on a tank which can be carried aboard the airships, but will put it on hold till later, for 140 million man-hours, as well as steam-clockwork armour, which will take 250m man-hours (Also on hold)

I think that is reasonable. For the time being anyway.

"The citizens of Berlin cowered today as Sigma forces dropped thousands of tanks into the city. The defence was swiftly annhialated, and the invaders took control. Long live Sigma!"

"Thousands of tank were dropped on the city of Berlin earlier today, they exploded as they hit the ground and 5 Berliners were killed. Clearly the high altitudes do something to your brain."

Lets say a 5% growth rate for everyone unless you do something specifically to change that?

I was thinking more in the region of .5 - 1% since we currently only have 2% and that is with modern medicine...I mean something like 1 in 7 children died before 10, life expectancy is 45...

As well as that the plagues, mining explosions, factory explosions, collapsing buildings....1900 in an industrial nation will serouisly damage your health.

Also, who is playing as the NPC empires? I assume it will be Archi?

I can...

Totally fair, since I'm going by my races advantages and disadvantages.

Oh play nicely.

Does anyone want to draw up a data sheet, so we can answer these questions directly...or are we going to agree?

Think I might change my war anthem to this

Nice long tense theme with a nice victory ditty at the end.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Archi, this is the 1900s. Everyone is having sex everywhere, that's why there's no such thing as birth control. The only reason we have a 2% growth rate today is because we're trying to be responsible. I am aware of buoyancy. Most submarines have air tanks aside from their living quarters; I'd just have to have bigger air tanks or have different gases (helium).

I like the idea about the sea combat triangle. About the obese and lazy thing, I said my entire race works as a storyline thing. As a game mechanic, I reduced it to 10%. Also, my race dies when they get obese and lazy (their fat clogs their gills), so really anyone that is alive is healthy. Also, I thought technology was invented through time spent? That was the whole reason for having those specific times for research.

I deprived myself of surface ships and airships because of my biological advantages. Nice neat term there. I will try to find figures as to the growth rate in the 1900s and late 1800s. If we're going to argue, might as well use facts and figures. To wikipedia!

Just going though the paces.

!!!!!!! Victorians not mean anything to you!

I'd just have to have bigger air tanks or have different gases (helium).

Just remember that Helium was discovered in 1895....

Also, I thought technology was invented through time spent? That was the whole reason for having those specific times for research.

Well we can reformat the ideas since we haven't started yet. I would rather have a simple, easy to understand idea than something which looks like it might work but actually won't.

Growth rate:

It increased by 100% from 1900 to 1950...so about 2%

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Victorians were a cultural response, not a physical response. Let me find the growth rate of a developing country, and we can go from there.

Also, mine looking up the possible growth rates for salmon populations without human interference? I think you'll find they are startlingly high.

Hmmm, you're right Archi. The highest population growth in this century seems to be the Maldives with 5.5%. I have a feeling that this game might get dull if everyone gets into a war and starts killing off people. Also, your Barbary Corsair attacks are definitely going to kill more than 5% a year.

----------

Not really a realism problem, but you'd have to make a fairly boring game. <_<

Well obvouisly post war baby booms...Added to that the BCC only attack ships, so unless someone/everyone declares war on me I should only be killing a few thousand a year.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

It only attacks ships? What kind of fleet does it have? I was under the impression that it landed on the coast and massacred a buncha people, took their stuff, and left.

There are post-war baby booms?

Nah the BCC is a trading nation...which makes sure that no one else does any trading without paying us our cut.

The fleet is mainly submarine.

Of course there are post war baby booms...imagine the situation...you have been in a trench...without women for five or six years...When you get home you are gonna have sex with your wife and since there is not an incredible amount of contraception she is probably gonna get pregnate...Also if you were faced with your mortality you are going to want to get the imortality that children give(since they go on after you die)

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

So you're saying the BCC doesn't attack unprovoked; only when it hasn't been paid its cut from trading?

Its is not a raider nation.

It just wants a monopoly on sea trade. Air trade is more difficult because we currently don't have any sea to air weapons(beyond cannonade anyway) added to my general lack of aircraft.

If I give you a cut of my trade every ship I go around and you monitor and tax and all that, will you not attack my ships? Also, what is your opinion on military action?

Ah, now I understand. You want to be the UPS. "All ships that sail the sea". Does that include military ships attacking other nations? Does it include people which live and farm in the sea?

I can't imagine anyone living in the sea, but yeah, anyone and everyone who travels by the sea has a chance of being attacked by me.

UPS? Uninterrupted Power Supply?

Amphibians? I'll be forced to live in tunnels connected to the sea then.

I'm having trouble understanding the concept of an invincible fleet which attacks everyone in the sea. Well, I can always go into the deepest reaches of the sea where you can't get me with your subs.

This is the 1900s. There's no sub that can withstand pressures that high while maintaining air inside.
