Now, i'm going to be completely honest with you guys. my friends do really random and stupid [cabbage]. about 2 hours ago one of my friends texted me and told me that his parents weren't home and that there was a bottle of bacardi puerto rican rum sitting on his counter. heres where he threw me for a loop.

... i was stunned for a few seconds. i can't imagine why anybody would do this. he lives right up the street so he invited me up (i told him i had homework). to my knowledge he is going to make one of those bettycrocker one minute lava cakes using the rum (it cooks in the microwave in 1 minute 15 seconds). this is just kind of wacky. does anybody have any information about microwaving alcohol? the bacardi is 72.5% alcohol i think and i'm scared that he'll blow up his house. im going down in about 15 minutes and i need to present FACTS to him of why his safety is in danger.

problem solved (i think).. just read some stuff on other forums and im going down there right now to stop him.

I'm guessing the most that'll happen is a small fire that will ruin the microwave or it'll just burst up and he'll stop the microwave before anything bad happens.

I don't think there's any danger of explosion or fire in a microwave, but I couldn't be sure.

 

That aside, all your friend is going to end up with is a cake that tastes terrible. When you cook with alcohol (wines, sherries etc) the alcohol itself evaporates away and just leaves flavour.

thats what i thought but i wasn't sure. cause i know stuff like vodka sauce just evaporates and leaves flavor .. but from what i read it seems that over a certain content it would just blow up. but anyway, i just called him and his mom picked up so i guess problem solved :pray:

Yeah, the alcohol will evaporate out so I hope he doesn't think he'll get drunk from eating cake...

 

If he microwaves it I don't think there's much risk of fire, it will probably just damage the microwave and make his parents mad.

Bake a cake, drink the Bacardi.

Alcohol isn't nearly combustible enough to do any harm to anything besides possibly the inside of the microwave/oven.

Does this mean we drink glass now?

 

I don't think it'll do any more harm than alcohol would have normally. I can't imagine microwaved alcohol alters it anyway signficant. Baking it however, will absorb the alcohol almost completely out of it, making it merely taste like rum. Your friend will probably be fine.

Seems like a waste.

Why don't you just come over, have some pregame shots(and I mean 8-9) then you proceed to have an adventure making that cake?

Any news on how it ended? Because I doubt it would be dangerous, but also wouldn't be very tasteful i guess :razz:
