Haiti Earthquake

Recommended Posts

EDIT: Haiti got hit by another aftershock today, measuring a 6.1 on the Richter Scale. Just .9 less then the original earthquake last week.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2612241/another_haiti_earthquake_brought_on.html?cat=9

So I assume most everyone has heard about the earthquake in Haiti. Thought I would start a topic about it.

First of all I express my sympathy to anyone there or who has family/friends there. Basically for this topic I just wanted to try and see what people think about whats going on with Haiti.

Please share and discuss your opinions on what happened, what should be done, and what is being done.

Do they have casualty estimates yet? My mom said she heard over 100,000 but that seems a little too many to me.

Probably at least 2,000+

No one knows, I saw one of the first news head lines and it said that they didn't know if anyone died till the photos started to come in. Then things got worse.

And that was right near the capital too...Man, I hope for the best in Haiti.

Yeah, I was watching this on the Chinese Channel. When i first looked at the map they were showing, I thought it was Alaska, but later on, I found out it was Haiti :-|

My dad's still ranting about how I don't watch the news :-X

The picture of the Presidential Palace was stunning.

Haiti-Presidential-Palace-quake.jpg

What would the reaction be if the White House or Buckingham Palace were destroyed like this?

It's really sad that such a horrible thing happens to a very poor country like Haiti.

I know there are no official casualty estimates yet, but there are 2 million people within 5 miles of the epicenter of the quake alone, along with millions more further out.

Bad stuff.

They don't know how many people have died yet, the 100,000 was an estimate by the Haitian President - that's where the number came from.

Here's the yahoo article as well: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/cb_haiti_earthquake

I've heard of estimates exceeding 500,000 people lost. We'll have to see how many lives were actually lost. I'm glad a tsunami didn't form after the earthquake.

Maybe my school should take a month off and head down to Haiti to help with clean-up/reconstruction.

: \ It doesn't make any sense to just hear about it and feel sad because it doesn't change anything down there. Although, it's what the majority of us are doing at the moment.

I looked at the slide show they have next to there articles, the damage is horrible, the amount of damage is scary to see it.

I also read that over 3 million are homeless from this.

Glad that the UN, Red Cross, WHO, and at least a few countries (China, US, Canada, many European nations, etc) are helping out. Such a terrible disaster...

There's a huge Haitian population here in Montreal so there's already a bunch of programs to help give donations and stuff like that but nothing can really help these people... It's just natural disaster after natural disaster. Added to their terrible poverty, Haiti is the prime example of a country that can't catch a break. I have at least 10 Haitian friends spazzing out on Facebook, some angry and some sad, all full of despair.

Luckily an Air Force special forces group made it to Haiti and set up a makeshift control tower at the airport (which will undoubtedly become the busiest in the Caribbean in the next few days), which should help tons with all the aid efforts. Until now, they'd been discussing moving supplies and volunteers via boat or car from the Dominican Republic. Would've taken hours.

What good does getting angry have when there's all this chaos?

Repressing the anger wouldn't help either. Some people simply can't help, but that doesn't mean they can't feel bad for what happened/is happening.

Such a tragedy. The people of Haiti have my deepest condolences.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

And things were just starting to get better on the economic side... I don't mean to say that anyone deserves this, but really, it had to happen there? :|

I tried to organize a fundraiser tonight (we're celebrating Latin classes tonight at my school) but the principal objected to that. I had everything planned, too...

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Its not as high as 2 million, the Red Cross Said at least 50,000. Te Prime Minister of Haiti Said 500,000.

Those are some of the highest estimates so far. Its probably 100,000+ though.

2 million would be intense, that'd be more than the tsunami in indonesia killed those few years ago, and that was the worst natural disaster to date, if my history channel programming wasn't telling me lies.

The single most deadly earthquake was an 8.3 in China that killed 800,000. I doubt that a 7.0 could kill up to 2 million.

Its going to be up past the Indonesian Death toll, which saddens me greatly.
