The Metal Thread

Recommended Posts

I follow some download blogs and occasionally participate in discussions on /mu/, but most of the time they're not worthwhile, so I'm looking for something new.

Have you ever checked out Sputnik Music? I find a lot of really good stuff from a variety of genres on there; its a user review site.

The new Fleshgod Apocalypse single sounds pretty awesome I think.

The album's leaked - it's pretty good.

I haven't read through the thread, but hopefully there's been extensive discussion on it already, but Hell's Human Remains is hands down the best trad heavy metal album of the year thus far.

Have I been oblivious until now or is trad metal becoming popular again?

CET ENFANT EST L'AAANNGE DU MAL

This is the kind of band I'd like to have known about when I was looking for bands similar to Iron Maiden. It sounds exactly like them around Piece of Mind. The bass especially.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Matt: You want the funny shit that happens here and there, you think it comes out of your [bleep]ing [wagon] pushes garbage can down, don't you? You think it's funny? It comes out of here! running towards Camera guy

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

Matt: FUNNY ISN'T REAL! FUNNY ISN'T REAL!

I'm afraid you've been oblivious, there's been quite a resurgence, particularly in Sweden.

Check out:

Wolf

Portrait

In Solitude

The aforementioned Hell

Enforcer

Grand Magus

Cauldron

There's loads, but those are some of the best.

Well [bleep]. I don't really like it anymore. I downloaded Powerslave the other day and only enjoyed the track I already knew. The four middle ones sucked, but the Rime of the Ancient Mariner is so good. I'm downloading Piece Of Mind at the moment.

[Edit] 1) Oh, it's 4:29 AM. Welp, listening anyway. I made a trancy rewrite of Where Eagles Dare way back when I first got FL Studio. It wasn't in the right time signature.

[Edit] Oh god that palm mute part after the solo.

[Edit] 2) Sounds like my taste in Maiden hasn't changed. Still can't deal with how bad the slow parts of Revelations are. Yes, TIF is my notebook.

[Edit] 3) The bass tone... I pray to attain it one day.

[Edit] 5) Just drew my parting groan. I haven't listened to this song in way too long.

[Edit] 6) There are not enough synonyms to the word pool in the English language it seems. Also, rhyming together and forever is in my list of things I don't allow myself or anyone in lyrics. "Set me free" too, but it's not in Still Life.

[Edit] 7) Meh.

8) I liked this song a lot. Still do. I'd never gotten the "sunlight falling on your steel" metaphor until now.

9) Never gave To Tame a Land a true chance. It's dope. Yes I did, actually, I liked it a lot. I remember. I didn't listen to it until later in my Maiden career you could say. I like that they gave it a slightly exotic feel. I wish they had done more with that modulation during the intro/outro.

10) I've always liked this song. Never got my hands on the original. I don't know what the lyrics are about other than having the fire and being good at something, but It's catchy and fun.

11) I should download Aqualung. Love this song too. [cabbage], ripped the cable out of my tower. Woke mom up.

And that's the end of the latest installment of Omar's uncalled for opinions. What was this about again? Yeah, I will check those bands out, but I don't think I can listen to tons of this, it's not particularly challenging

Omar, you might like Pensees Nocturnes - they're black metal, but heavily progressive, and strongly influenced by neoclassical (as opposed to the Cradle Of Dimmu axis of poppy symph-black). If you want some challenging listening, try their new one Ceci Est De La Musique - it's one 55-minute track that simultaneously manages to be catchy and epic.

Sounds like my jam. I'll listen next.

[Edit] Just started listening (about 1:20 in), it's amazing. The production could be better though.

[Edit] I forgot this is black metal. I'm obviously talking about the symphonic parts.

[Edit] 10/10

Do you know how they managed to gather so many musicians? Or are the band members/composers multi-instrumentalists?

If you like Blackmetal, maybe you'll like Ondskapt

Walpurgisnacht, is a Dutch DSBM band, in case anyone's interested in that.

I could also throw in some Finnish stuff, like Horna or Behexen.

At the Gates might be too obvious for the melodic death people amongst us, but i'll mention em anyways:)

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing;

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews;

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores;

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

@Omar: Forgive me if i'm [developmentally delayed]ed, are your edits the respective track? Piece of Mind is my absolute favorite album of all Maiden albums.

@Sebas: At the Gates should always be mentioned.

I recently listened to Brave New World album, hadn't done that for many years, and bloody hell, it's brilliant. I've had it on now, giving it a few spins the last few days. And then i remembered, god damn, i've got about 50 odd albums that i've given the same treatment, also found a couple still in their plastic encasing.

I listen to most kinds of metal, and consider my taste in music quite diverse.

Any one hear Wretched - The Exodus Of Autonomy from last year? Critics were split on whether the album was any good, half said it was, half said it wasn't. i thought it was brillliant, and really enjoyed listening to it.

Which albums are you guys looking forward to from the rest of this year?

So far this year theres been some good and some bad albums. I was not impressed with Dark Tranquility's album, but loved Solution .45s.

Thanks, haha. I played bass in Wretched for a few years. We started as a band called And Since Forgotten in high school then changed the name to Wretched a little before we signed to Victory Records.

I guess this metal thread is as good of a place to post this as anywhere else. Anyone want to recommend me some hardcore punk bands they like? I've been getting into the genre a lot lately and I'd be interested to see if any of you guys have any favorites. I like hardcore to have at least a little bit of a melody to it, but I still like it loud and not overly sing-songy.

Might want to ask TheDefiniteArticle, he's into hardcore as well. I grabbed these from a blog he participates in.

If you're looking for Hardcore:

Modern Life is War - Witness

La Dispute - Wildlife

Touche Amore - To the Beat of a Dead Horse

Defeater - Travels

Departures - When Losing Everything is Everything You Wanted

More Than Life - Love Let Me Go

Gallows - Grey Britain

Manners - Apparitions

Low Threat profile - Product #2

Weekend Nachos - Worthless

Until Your Heart Stops - Errors

All are fantastic albums, should keep you busy for a while.
