Dusty, he started out a champion and captured the kings brother, when the brother assassinated the king he tried to help the brother get the people's trust. The brother misunderstood and banished him. El Cid continued doing things that were good for Spain and after a lot of work he was the ruler of large parts of it. It'll be mostly a scare weapon, and won't deal much damage in most instances. You won only because they're as-of-yet unorganized and for some reason they actually met you in traditional combat. They could easily decide to start raiding the coasts instead, in which case widespread panic and a loss of infrastructure would likely be the result. So long as the North has you as a common enemy, you're in trouble.
