Gun Control

And letting people possess something dangerous is a scary path: why can't they just possess bombs, or booby traps? That would scare the crap out of anyone considering a B&E.

Didn't you talk about how dogs could be dangerous? So we shouldn't have those? Knives are pretty dangerous, we should ban those too.

We also allow many harmful chemicals, and those tend to be within reach of children under the average sink. Unless I'm wrong they can be made into either drugs or even more dangerous poisons, and are easier to get than guns.

Which brings up another point... Would restricting or banning guns lead to a market similar to today's illegal drug trade or alcohol during prohibition?

And yet I'm assuming that everyone here supports the continued criminalization of marijuana.

The idea of a black market being formed didn't slow people there. Why should that influence gun control? After all, we live in a perfect world, where when a big bad scary burglar breaks into you house, you shoot him, and we all go on living happily every after. After all, we can just forget about the school shootings, the rape, drug killings, drive-by shootings, and the death of innocents by the hand of someone too stupid, drunk or careless to deserve ownership of a firearm.

In a gun-free world there will still be rapists, murderers, and robbers, as well as stupid, drunk, and careless people. It's beyond foolish to think that all of that will disappear if the average Joe can't get a gun.

And in a world without swimming pools toddlers will still drown.

Way to generalise everyone, I'm against the continued criminalization of marijuana and believe it needs to be legalised.

Thank you for bringing this argument. Of course there will be still those things, however gun control won't limit those things and in fact would just increase the occurrence of them. The shooters of the Columbine massacre violated close to 20 firearms laws in obtaining weapons, would 21 laws really have made a difference? The Pearl High School shooting could have been stopped had the "Gun-Free School Zones" law not passed. Some food for thought, why is it that in rural areas guns are introduced to children at a young age and they learn how to use them, yet those areas are nearly devoid of school shootings. In 1966, the city of Orlando responded to a wave of sexual assaults by offering firearms training classes to women. Rapes dropped by nearly 90% the following year. Drug dealers won't be slowed by gun laws, they already illegally obtain drugs.

No. It's stupid to imprison people who have done no harm.

The idea of a black market being formed didn't slow people there.

They didn't know about the repercussions of banning something as much as we do now in the present day.

After all, we live in a perfect world, where when a big bad scary burglar breaks into you house, you shoot him, and we all go on living happily every after.

You're right! We actually live in a perfect world where home invasions never happen, innocent people never get threatened or robber or raped or murdered, and in the ridiculously unlikely scenario that they do, the cops will magically appear right away and take care of everything in the span of a millisecond. And then you find one million dollars on the floor! Yay!

After all, we can just forget about the school shootings, the rape, drug killings, drive-by shootings, and the death of innocents by the hand of someone too stupid, drunk or careless to deserve ownership of a firearm.

I get a feeling that those occurrences would become even more prevalent if we lived in a society where only criminals can obtain guns.

Teen shot dead after egging Mercedes

GREG BLUESTEIN

The Associated Press

ATLANTA Authorities say a driver enraged because a 17-year-old boy egged his Mercedes on Halloween fatally shot the prankster in the neck and throat as he tried to run away.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones says the driver confronted the teen and fired 10 shots at him around 8 p.m. Sunday. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office says the teen, Tivarus King, died as he was being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Jones says officers dispatched to the scene in northwest Atlanta spotted a gold Mercedes driving by and detained the driver. She says the suspect is being questioned by homicide investigators but has not yet been charged.

Shooting 10 rounds at someone because they threw an egg at your car is [developmentally delayed]ed. I've got nothing against allowing civilians to own firearms (provided they do it legit and go through all the checks and whatever) but it's incidents like this that bolster the argument against gun ownership.

Anecdotal examples do not make for an informed decision - indeed, such highly publicized yet rare incidents are why many nations have taken the unbelievably irresponsible step of banning firearms. The statistics in the matter show quite clearly that they do save lives and should thus not be banned. Any such single examples only serve to distract people from the truth.

I think that's even more of an encouragement, really. Criminals and uh, evil people, are willing to use guns to gain their power. How can peace-sign fingers protect against guns? You have to fight fire with fire in this case because the other fire is hell.

Guns, however, do not protect against guns. Want to know what's dangerous? Free access to guns in a society where school shootings, drive-bys, armed robbery, organized crime and murder are all exceedingly common. I'm not saying that guns are necessarily the root of the problem, but they certainly aren't helping.

I could repeat that with nearly everything commonly used to kill others. That doesn't mean that the item needs to be restricted. The fact of the matter is that guns stop a significant amount of time, and I'd much rather have a gun than a knife when someone with a gun is attacking me. Regardless of the law, people will just buy or make their own weapons.

It's not so much what he did, it's more of a question of why. He modernized China, and made it economically competitive in international markets. In doing so, he helped prevent millions of future deaths.

The way this incident was described, the gunman wasn't "defending his property", he was retaliating. This is against the law, and I expect to see him charged for murder. Contrary to popular belief, it is illegal to shoot someone who isn't threatening you. If someone takes your wallet and is running away, you're not allowed to shoot them. That isn't self defense, and it is a poor use of a firearm.
