A new players first day (not all bad)

Featured Replies

Hello Tip.it!

Today was my very first day playing Runescape and I figured I might let people know what I thought and see if they have any suggestions or thoughts. I already found quite a bit of help via this forum so thanks already!

So lets start from the beginning. I quite enjoyed the intro quest/tutorial I thought it was a nice way to introduce me into some of the aspects of the game.

Im was then interested in the advisor that I'm assuming you get for ever? Roddek is his name? He seems quite helpful for the most part. I decided when I made

my character I would like to try range and from the help of Roddek he sent me to Varrok where I was allowed a few arrows and a bow for free! I thought this was

excellent. I was worried at first how I was to fight anything without some kind of starting equipment etc.

I began ranging the rats but they seemed a little hard and my measly arrow supply was quickly draining. Thats when I found tip.it and found some good advice.

I found out about chickens. These have turned out great in some ways but lacking in others. Firstly they have been great because I have been collecting the feathers

which sell quickly and for a good amount on the grand exchange. With my 20 free arrows I had left I was able to collect enough feathers for 1200 gold which got me

about 150 arrows. Great Im good to go for a while! I head back to the chickens to collect more feathers and gain some exp. This is where I have found the chickens

lacking.

I have been playing for atleast 3 hours and my range and defense level is only 7... I can attribute one thing too it perhaps and that is the utterly boring and slow task

of collecting arrows after firing them. This slows me down extremely it feels as not only do I run over to the dead chickens to collect his feathers but also I have to stop

at 2-4 other tiles to grab my arrows. Sure I could skip this i suppose but when your starting out and have no money etc. saving arrows seems fairly important.

By now I have something like 4k gold in my bank and something like 400 arrows. I haven't decided for sure yet if I should stop picking up arrows to speed up exp or to

keep grabing them. It would seem at this point that I would gather enough feathers to replace the arrows quite easily but should I waste the money? I also still feel that

leveling in this game is fairly slow? I mean after 3+ hours of playing and I'm still fighting chickens?

The next big complaint I have is that I cant play full screen unless I'm a member? Dang, I know that they want people to subscribe but how am I supposed to emerse my

self in the game to decide if I want to pay a subscription or not. Something else I noticed and I'm not sure if Runescape even has them or not but it is possible bots? I say

this because while at the chickens coop on almost every server I tried there is like 6 people much higher level then I nearly instantly attacking the chickens and never

responding to any chat messages I send... Some one might have to enlighten me on that subject, if there is bots or not.

So lets recap with some Pro's and Con's from a first time player on his first day.

Pro's

Good intro quest

Helpful Advisor (Roddek)

Free Starting Gear That I Have to Travel to Get So I Learn the Area a Little Bit.

Love the Idea of the Grand Exchange.

Con's

Lack of information after "Getting Started" (free gear etc)

PICKING UP ARROWS (worst thing so far)

General Slow Leveling?

No Full Screen

Bots?

Neutral

I also didn't mention this but I don't know if im just not used to it yet or if I flat out don't like it but clicking to move and do everything seems kind of awkward. Perhaps

Im just used to keyboard controls for targeting/attacking etc. but clicking just seems a little obsolete after controlling with a keyboard.

I'd like to know what you think about my first impression and perhaps give me any suggestions etc.

Give some other skills a try. Like, your melee skills, and things like woodcutting.

Give quests a try. Definitely a good way to pass the time. They're fun too! |^_^|

Picking up arrows isn't that daunting of a task really, if you're a good right-clicker that is.

And a lot of high levels choose to kill chickens because they're surprisingly good cash. Reasons I have yet to be heard of, but mainly because of their feathers and bones.

Good luck on the rest of your runescape journey! The noob days are the best (for me at least). :P

Yeah definitely look into questing its a great way to get you started and unlock some useful things.

Also no fullscreen isn't a huge issue,; pretty much everybody plays in resizeable to have quick access to fansites etc. It gives the same layout as full screen, but just squeezes into your browser window.

Yeah and chickens are the easiest free source of feathers in-game and feathers make decent money so a lot of high levels use them; also instantly hitting a spawn isn't neccessarily botting its knowing the game. The chickens will spawn a certain amount of time after they die on the same tile everytime; learn the timings and you can have ur mouse on the tile and click as soon as the chicken should appear.

Don't forget the other enemies too. Cows behind you may be faster exp and the hides sell well I think. Mainly just go and explore.

Yes, there are a lot of botters! When i planted a antibotter thingy at aubury essencemine, everyone became trapped, a.k.a 30 people were botting. And when i removed it everyone teleed at the same time, fairly epic. But sad :(

Bots?

-lack of information: yes, runescape appears to have a huge problem, which is; helping new players. They put up barriers and whatnot, but they dont give new players actual advice. Other players also create a distrust in the community, which I hate.

-picking up arrows: there is a members only device that retrieves your arrows instantly for you called the ava's atractor/accumulator.

-slow leveling: a big problem in the early levels, it will generally get faster as you level up.(with combat skills, you hit higher, therfore get more xp for your time)

-full screen is there, few use it, however.

-bots:a raging issue.

Considering its your first day playing RS, some of your language reflects someone who's not quite so new to RS as you make out. hmmmmmmmmmm :-k

Welcome to the game!

You can get free things from several areas in Runescape. Not sure of them all, but in Lumbridge you can get free stuff from the general store, the fishing store and the place next to the fishing store with combat tutors. You can get free runes for magic and probably some free arrows too. I like how they don't coddle newbies and tell them where to get everything. Not telling you everything encourages to either explore and find it out for yourself or interact with the community and ask for help. Many of us here (myself included) have been playing since rsc, where you were told almost nothing and the game was more rewarding for it.

The higher level players you saw killing chickens probably weren't bots. They one-hitted them because they were higher level, and they clicked as soon as they spawned because they know where the spawn places are. They didn't reply to your messages because many play with their public chat turned off (you'll see the option on the bottom left hand corner of the game screen). It leaves you more time to click if you don't have to type. The higher levels were probably killing chickens because feathers are used for fishing things like salmon and trout, and are also used for the members' skill fletching, which allows you to make ranged weapons and ammunition.

If you got membership and quested a bit you'd be able to procure a device that picks up your arrows for you, but since you're a newbie you might not know if that's what you want or not yet.

I didn't think of levelling as slow really, especially at lower levels. If you trained melee (swords etc) you might get your defence up quicker, but in general the higher you go the slower it is.

Just a quick question really: what intro tutorial are they doing these days? Are they still doling out that silly dragon quest or have they put it back to the old one?

It is still that quest with the red dragon, except now you can choose clothes by selecting a class. Every class shows your character do a fancy animation that somehow realates to the class.

Quests just keep bringing me back to this game.

Ah! I did wonder why the new clothes had names like "builder" etc lol. That's what you get for moving house and having your provider screw up your internets for a month. Cheers :)

Range is a VERY slow skill to train out of the gate. To speed it up somewhat, change your combat style to "rapid". Chickens are your best bet when starting out.

Tip: Keep an axe and tinderbox in your inventory. Collect/bury all bones, collect all the feathers. When your inventory is full, go outside the pen and chop a regular tree (you will have to drop one raw chicken first). Light the fire, and use the raw chickens on the fire (don't forget to pick up the one you dropped!) - this is decent way to get your cooking level up pretty quickly, and breaks up the monotony of just Ranging. Plus - no need to bank them...just drop them once they are either cooked or burned. As your level in cooking advances, you will burn less. Better to burn chickens, rather than fish once you start to train that skill.

Chickens are a good spot to train all your combat stats initially. I believe it is the only "monster" that cannot kill you no matter what. When I started out, I trained there for quite some time to build up Attack, Strength, and Defense. Once my Defense level was decent (around 20), I went and trained Range and Magic on Cows.

A Hearty, Welcome to Runescape!

Also, do the Lumbridge/Draynor Achievement Diary. It's a nice thing to do, and sets yourself some goals to work on ^^

I am personally stuck at the 68 smithing task...

Sounds like you had a blast compared to my first day, or even week. I was just wandering around wondering what the hell I was doing.

You could always check out the guides on the site here, especially the Beginner's Basics and Beginner's Reference, which are here; Tip.it Guides.

I would suggest attempting a few of the quests and looking at the Lumbridge Achievement Diary, they'll allow you to get to know the game a bit better and expand your knowledge on the places and skills. Have fun.

Marker seeds.

Get aubury to stand in one spot and quickly plant a marker plant (east) under him, move one step away from him and talk to him so he won't move. Majority of the bots get confused and they just freeze. When you pull it up, everyone rushes and teleports at the same time, pretty funny if you are bored.

A novel idea... an anti-botting bot. make an account and set it up with a macro so its always talking to aubrey :P

On Topic. Welcome to Runescape, may your advetures be epic. One thing I would recomend as a skill is mining... good money to be had if you work at it long enough. The downside is that it gets boring easily. Just some food for thought.

While you are in the GE, you may want to stop by the people lighting fires in there. One inventory of ashes would almost double your total gold supply, and it takes like 30 seconds to pick up that many.

I have to say, as long as you have a resizeable window, your good. I almost never bother with full screen, half the things on RS I do I like being able to view other tabs; and there's not a big enough difference between full screen and resizeable window anyways to make full screen worth it.

P.S. No idea if this would work... but F11 is the default button on most browsers for the browser to go full screen. That might make full screen work on rs lol.

Hmm, it works, you just need to start in another tab lol.

But yeah, do try out other skills. And quests. And the diary. And go explore :)

Squab unleashes Megiddo! Completed all quests and hard diaries. 75+ Skiller. (At one point.) 2000+ total. 99 Magic.
[spoiler=The rest of my sig. You know you wanna see it.]

my difinition of noob is i dont like u, either u are better then me or u are worst them me

Buying spins make you a bad person...don't do it. It's like buying nukes for North Korea.

Well if it bothers you that the game is more fun now, then you can go cry in a corner. :shame:

your article was the equivalent of a circumcized porcupine

The only thing wrong with it is the lack of a percentage for when you need to stroke it.

has anyone else wondered why this is in the rants section?

I don't care to be honest, but to answer your question, it probably has something to do with the con's section of the OP
