US Drops to #49 in Life Expectancy

In Canada some cosmetic surgery is free: my brother has scar from a car accident, and he can have it removed at any point in the next 10 years.

Ambulance ride? Nothing.

Stitches? Nothing.

So guess what? Our van is wrecked, but in a few minutes, we're in an ambulance, and twenty minutes later my little bro is stitched up. Cost us $0.

Though I fully agree with your latest post.

No, you understand how statistics work. That was mainly directed at Mage (with his tendencies to belittle conservatives at every opportunity), but it also applies to anyone who does that. The funniest thing is when you make a criticism about their inferences of the statistics and their reply is, "Oh, so now you're just ignoring the facts? There's no point in debating with you then."

Here's an example: "Billy goes to school on Monday with a red shirt. Nobody picks on him. Billy goes to school on Tuesday with a blue shirt. Somebody picks on him. This suggests that people are more likely to pick on people who wear blue shirts." No... the color of the shirt isn't the only variable to take into account. For all we know, it could be that people are meaner on Tuesdays, or one of the millions of other possibilities.

I'd rather pay a little over my life time rather than get slammed with a huge bill. Plus, it helps the maximum amount of people while hurting the least amount. I can't think of many better things for my taxes to go to than helping someone get health care

Yeah, you pay over time rather than up front. It's really a personal preference as to WHEN you pay but one thing that's quite clear is that for most things, it's way cheaper over all with public healthcare.

This may be a good way to handle privatized healthcare too, though I'd be surprised if it isn't an option.

Well with insurance you really are paying over time, just a lot more than you would in a public system.

Assuming your insurance doesn't deny your claim. Also, an idea would keep your privatized system for anyone who wants to pay extra for it, and make everything else universal. Have an option

I'd have been hoping for this but everyone in the States seems to think it's an either/or choice.

Problem then is that people who would usually prefer to go private will object to their taxes supporting the public option when they'll never use it.

Ah, good point. There's the catch. Also, I've heard the drug prices are ridiculously high in USA, anyone Americans feel like giving some input to that? I was looking at Paxil prices online a couple weeks ago on I think American sites. They had a month of generic brand Paxil at like $250+ a month, whereas at my Wal-Mart pharmacy I got a month supply for $40 with no insurance.

I knew a lot of people, before Wal Mart and all these cheap pharmacies starting popping out, who went to Tijuana (Mexican city on the border) to buy pills, medicine, and cheap clothing.

Hell, some still do.

If Mountains Beyond Mountains can be trusted, drug companies charge much more in the US of A because they know people can afford it. Basically, it's a scam.

As a Canadian it's nice knowing that any time I seriously injure myself, I don't need to worry about going bankrupt. And I'm proud to be taxed to keep our system running, it ain't perfect but it's better than the alternative. I hope one day you Americans can get it too, I've heard such terrible stories about medical care there.

Yeah, there's something called medical tourism, where people go to other countries to pay less for major surgeries.

I don't know if this has been brought up, but I think the loose law on guns in the States might have something to do with this. I don't know the numbers, but doesn't America have like one the the highest gun crime rates in the world?

Even then, to be fair, there are a LOT of people in the USA compared to most other countries. And still, I don't think gun crimes are factored into life expectancy in this case. Let's uh, not push the topic in that direction. And that's not the only reason for a lower life expectancy. I could start involving entrophy, but then I'd be getting too complex.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.
