Recycling Old Holiday Rewards

Featured Replies

Something that has been bothering me about the last few updates is that Jagex has been simply using old rewards with new skins due to demand of the players. Now keep in mind, since I've been around (March 2004), I've only missed one reward (Yo-Yo) and I haven't cried about it (nor the Scythe/Bunny Ears for that matter).

Bunny Ears = Squirrel Ears

Yo-Yo + Zombie Head = Eek

Rubber Chicken = Easter Carrot

Easter Ring = Bone Brooch

Now, remember that demand of the players I mentioned earlier? Why would the players demand a reward that has already been introduced into the game? It seems as if a tone of jealousy clouds everything about the newer generation of RuneScape players. The same group demanded that the Flagstaff of Festivities be taken out of game because they couldn't afford to go to Runefest. The same group voted for a recycled version of the Easter Ring. They appear to only want what they know they can never have, and outside of F2P, most players never look at the rewards again.

Should these individuals have prevented the majority of players from obtaining a potentially good reward because they were too lazy (to earn the money) to buy a Ring of Stone? Sure maybe some F2Pers wanted something. However, these players will either eventually obtain membership anyway or just quit, so why should that matter? These individuals seem to care about nothing more than the reward, as opposed to the event itself. As stated earlier, the vast majority of players won't even look at a holiday event reward again, so why not just make a new one? Laziness on Jagex's part, possibly.

Currently, most of the holiday rewards only serve the purpose of showing how long one has been playing. We don't need copies of that. Instead of "punishing" those of us who have been playing the game longer than little Timmy, why not just make a new item altogether?

I'm kinda mad that I joined only a few days after the Easter 2K6 event ended, leaving me without that fancy ring. But when the results of the poll came out, announcing the winner to be the brooch, even I was quite offended.

Jagex really overplayed their lack of originality and subtlety in this one, but we can't really expect much from a company that behaves the way they behave. I've noticed that since MMG took over as C.E.O., Runescape has, in general, been guided by ideas of instant gratification and false equality.

Whatever that means.

I'm fairly certain the first 3 recycled rewards didn't have a poll. Also, the concept for bone brooch was still added to the poll by Jagex when it was a clear copy of the Easter Ring. This is definitely a rant...

I agree completely, but I have to point out that my rubber chicken will always be a rubber chicken. So, yes new players are getting a version of it, they aren't getting the actual thing. Now, if Jagex turned around and started giving out rubber chickens, bunny ears, and easter rings that would be pretty angry.

And I think your point about never looking at the rewards again might be fueling their idea. They could be reasoning that no one will notice.

The bone brooch also appeared in a poll in '07.

I stopped reading when I saw this:

What makes you think it's just f2pers wanting that reward? What makes you think they constantly want stuff all the time? What makes you think ALL of them would get membership or quit? Most importantly, what makes you think f2pers don't care about the reward?

I myself love holiday events very much as they're a nice distraction from my daily activities. However, you saying that they will get mem or quit is very, very stereotypical and I would like you to not say something like that again. (I would really want members but unfortunately due to my location, I couldn't...)

I could go on with my huge obsessive love for my fellow f2p friends, but that would require a whole different topic.

F2pers have a limited choice of clothing to wear, and when I do make an appearance in F2P, everyone is wearing Random Event or Holiday Event Clothing (or rune).

I never said F2Pers don't want the reward. In fact, I said they did.

Sure maybe some F2Pers wanted something.

The only other individuals are the new generation of players who cries when someone has an item that they don't (Flagstaff of Festivities anyone?).

Also, there's a basic pattern of players:

1. F2pers who quit a few months after they "beat" F2P.

2. F2pers who decided to get membership.

3. F2pers who think it's special to say "I'm the best f2per," so they stay F2P for their 15 minutes of fame (special case).

4. F2pers who want membership, but live in a country where that's difficult (special case).

The majority fall under 1 and 2 (at least from my observations), so I think it's a safe "stereotype." Back in 2004-2005 when I was solely F2P, that's what all of my friends did. I have 0 friends from my F2p days that are still F2p or haven't quit. It's not a stereotype when it's true. I know you'll say that you know plenty of people who share your problem, but Jagex is slowly making their way around the world...

Lastly, that was probably extremely irrelevant to the topic at hand. Recycled holiday rewards =/= hating F2P.

Holiday items are stupid in general. Only one I find even remotely amusing is the snowglobe, which I mess around with every once in a very blue moon. The bone brooch will be ignored like all the others.

To put it bluntly, [bleep] off.

Easter Ring = Bone Brooch

Being an owner of the easter ring on a pervious account, I can easily verify that the bone brooch is a pathetic copy.

Can we get some ORIGINALITY in these rewards Pl0x...

Next thing you know, they will make a rip-off version of the phat/santa hat called something like the elf cap. :wall:

Eh im happy, i missed out on easter egg :)

I've missed out on it too (didn't play during the event, fml), but I think that the brooch is an inferior ripoff compared to the egg. It's just not the same, and looks like Jagex just wanted to pacify the crowds by giving them kiddies a reward they won't use after the event (or god forbid, this week).

Having said that, the event itself was great, and I loved some of the references/puns they put in there. Too bad the reward was garbage compared to the actual event.

my reaction

it sucks, just give it to diango

what where the other things on the poll,i remember the dog thingy, wich is like eek, but more of a difference

The once was a mexican called pepsi,

Or maybe it's just he had Hep C,

He was a pretty cool bro,

Bros generally are you know,

He hailed from the land of 'taters,

He was known to hate many-a-hater,

He likes a girl named Lacey,

His thoughts about her are kind of racy,

And also his dad likes to [rooster].

The dog wouldn't be like eek. Eek is more like a ripoff of the zombie head.

Full Skeleton costume + Bone Brooch animation looks better than easter ring imho. I might be biased though, the Skeleton costume is my favorite outfit in runescape.

The easter ring was a novel idea, but as far as knock offs are concerned I think this one was better implemented than the original. I can't say the same for eek, carrot, or squirrel ears.

True, but it is annoying to see that jagex has lost a lot of its originality/creativity and this is partly due to "newer" RS players who want to have as close to the original of a veteran reward as possible.

This also seems to follow the idea by some players that Jagex should "redrop" phats to make it "fair" so everyone can have one. I'm just glad that Jagex hasn't sunk that low, yet...

I couldn't care less about the rewards. But I wish jagex would spend less resources on content that's going to be around for 2 weeks and then disapeer. They should just be like the yoyo where you talk to X npc and recieve the item.

THIS. And there were a number of players then that wanted it too. Players that had the Easter Ring.

It's just elitism that makes this so hated.

I do have an easter ring. I honestly don't give a [cabbage] whether or not they aren't as unique as they were. But if you guys need that to feel good about yourselves, that's okay. Just don't go blaming Jagex for your lack of self-esteem.

It's loke "oh NOO other people can't have fun with these toys! My status is waaay more important than them! DURRRHHH"

Harsh, but every year it sounds more and more like that.
