Kid, you're a Noob, Nerd.

So I was browsing the RSOF today I came upon a thread in which someone was discussing whether the terms "Noob", "Nerd", "Kid", or "umadbrah?" offended anyone. This really used to bug me a lot pre-puberty, I can relate to little kids being impetuous and acting upon their emotions, but it's annoying either way. :|

 

Anyways, I was wondering if these aforementioned words annoy any of you? To be honest, none of these words annoy me anymore, but at one point they all did. I thought for some reason they degraded my esteem, or something, Yeah, stupid I know. ;)

 

Here's an awesome quote I found from someone who posted on that thread, the last few sentences cracked me up :-P

Being an adult, I know when I hear this that it's coming from someone who's not. It's that ever so common misconception that teenagers have that all adults speak to people younger than them in a condescending manner. It's either an attempt to make them seem older (and by hearing this I automatically know they're NOT), or to simply aggrivate me (which it doesn't). So: Fail X 2

As I am a nerd, I find this less offensive than being called a human being. Human beings as a whole are a disgusting and selfish lot. When someone calls me a nerd, I take that to mean that they're acknowledging that I'm smarter than they are. And if they have to resort to name calling, it's probably true anyways.

 

Do you know what the cool kids call nerds when they grow up?

Dissing them back doesn't work, they are used to it as most times they themselves are bullied in real life; they're conditioned to take insults.

 

Just saying "lol" usually ensues in a rage-induced wall of slanderous text; which is for da luls. :)

Used to, but they don't bother me anymore unless I'm already in a horrible mood because I've had one of those days. :P My friends and I call each other noob/nerd jokingly, though.

 

I especially agree with the "kid" thing that guy posted. Generally those calling you "kid" are kids themselves.

Nothing that a stranger says to me over the internet, Runescape or not, can bother me. Only children are bothered by words like 'noob'.

As to your post, well... I see these people more then most because I seem to attract the "zomg ur a mod u snitch nerd" folks. To be quite honest, I don't feel bothered that they are trying to insult me, more bothered because this is the state of our generation (note: some players don't fall within this generation, but most do). I actually feel bad for them that they don't see how foolish they look (and often are).

"kid" annoys me, but not in a hurtful/condescending way...it's just...annoying. It's overused...and is rarely even used in the what could even be considered the right context for it.

I know what you mean. Kid now has an alternate meaning, it's almost offensive to ask (some younger parents) "where's your kid?"

Sort of rude, and all just because it's so overused. :-X

then he says that he's 12 years old. Couldn't stop laughing.

I find people from ages 9-15 are really arrogant for the most part. Of course, theres some quiet ones in there, but I'm under the impression that they're all hormonally awkward kids that do stupid things just for the hell of it. Can't really blame em. -.-

It's funny how you mention that. Not only are these types of people constantly saying things like "wannabe Mod Noob11!1", but they are hypocritical and ask for ways to become a mod. Quite an ingenious plan really (not).
