Bloodstain
http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2010/explorer?ref=us Pretty cool, also under the "View more maps" you can look at the map in terms of income, education, some other cool stuff. Interesting to see how racially segregated some parts are, and how much freaking unoccupied land there is. I'm guessing a lot of that land is agriculture or desert or something though
Mirror
This is way too cool! My home town is just what I expected, whites are the minority. Thanks for the share! A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

das1330
This map goes to demonstrate the persistent, voluntary segregation of our society. In some ways it's truly interesting, but in others it is somewhat sad. Where I live is fairly racially integrated, but the areas immediately surrounding it show marked racial homogeneity. Diesel
My area's mid-90% white - what I expected. All of the neighborhood stereotypes that we hear about around here were visible. Last.Fm My Bloggy Proud to have served on Tip.it Crew
fakeitormakeit2
I find it interesting how my town has 0% black people. That explains why I never see any black people where I live. Range_This11
This map goes to demonstrate the persistent, voluntary segregation of our society. In some ways it's truly interesting, but in others it is somewhat sad. Where I live is fairly racially integrated, but the areas immediately surrounding it show marked racial homogeneity. While this is true, I don't think it has to do with race entirely. I think our cultural interests play a much bigger role in where we choose to live. I cannot speak on the division of races within a densely populated area, but I can speak from experience about the extremely unbalanced amount of Caucasians in rural communities compared to cities. Small, midwestern farming communities (like the one I grew up in) have a very high rate of retaining members of their community from birth until death. In other words, many of the people that grew up in these small communities will stay there for their entire lives. True, some will move out, but many stay (or at least stay in the area). This only makes the community more tight-knit and closed off. I have seen this time and time again. Historically, these communities are Caucasian-dominated, but is that because of segregation? Sure, you could say that we are segregating ourselves, but I see it differently. I have seen African-American families move in my community and move out within five years. Is this because they were discriminated against? Probably not. It's more likely that they have dissimilar cultural interests. As a community, we enjoy sitting around, drinking a lot of beer, discussing farms/4-wheelers/snowmobiles/the Packers, and hunting. If you ask me, none of those activities sound extremely appealing to African-Americans, they seem more appealing to rural white people. Giordano
But that's just the country, what about the city? For immigrants, you obviously want to live where there's more of your own culture there as well. Using my Los Angeles map: Monterey Park has lots of asians because it's like China Town: Chinese immigrants sticked with other Chinese immigrants. Etc, etc. Glendale, for instance, has lots of Armenian folk. The San Fernando valley has quite a bit Argentine folks, and East LA has Mexicans (big surprise!). Where as non-immigrant white folk (having generations of accumulative wealth) live in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, suburbs such as Rancho Cucamonga, Mission Viejo, and Costa Mesa. Which is why I love my home area (between Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga): a mix of races, immigrants and non-immigrants, rich and poor. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."
