General Aversion to Degradation

Recommended Posts

It wouldn't be popular, but what if armors had a mechanic that they could only be used for a set amount of time during another given time period. Perhaps a 2 hour a day or 10 hours a week thing.

It's not a good idea, in fact, I think it sucks, but it's something different at least.

Why do people not feel that glories are worthless due to their 'degrading' nature (the use of rechargable teleport casts), but Verac's skirt is worthless? When you're earning millions slaying monsters in addition to anything else you do to make money, does it really matter whether you use 895gp for a Games Necklace or 80K to fully repair that skirt at maximum? They're both negligible amounts.

There seems to be a distinction between some items that classes them as expensively degradable, but not others. Why?

I think a lot has to do with the cost factor of the repairs involved.

According to Rs/Wiki, the new armours cost 200k for every hour of degradation, which adds up to 2 Mill per set for repair costs when they hit "0".

There's a LOT of people who will balk at that price.

Because a Glory's degrading ability is an "addition to" ability. If you use it up, it loses that ability, but not it's stats as well. Skirt will degrade then become completely unuseable.

Plus you can pick and choose to use up the ability as you so please much like the DFS special ability to launch Dragonbreath.

200K per hour is certainly more expensive than 895gp, granted. But you're telling me someone with 200m in their backpocket for the plate would honestly scoff at 200K an hour? They most likely have money making methods that far outweigh that.

The added ability makes more sense though. Glories are used pretty much ubiquitously for those who lack furies anyway.

Also mind that is 200k per hour for each piece or 600k per hour for a set.

I did take that in mind, hence I only compared the plate. We're talking 500m for the whole set, not 200m. 600K per hour barely costs 0.1% of the total GE value of the set. Small change.

By contrast, 80K amounts to 4.4% of a V skirt, no idea what that would be for an hour, but I'm guessing a skirt doesn't last 44 hours.

I slay, why wear barrows when dragon + Seers 4 Enhanced Excal keep me alive on all tasks that you don't need to pray on?

Please, don't make this a subjective argument. What you like to slay in doesn't change what other people like to slay in, it merely offers an alternative be it good or bad.

However, I do agree to a certain extent that Barrows are quite pointless when Slaying, however, if you like efficiency, Bandos is quite good for Slayer.

Anyway, this is straying offtopic.

On Topic; People dislike degrading armours for a variety of reasons. Some are just lazy to fix armours, some have OCPD about armours degrading at different rates and some people just don't like the fact that a degraded piece of armour means no more camping at 'X' spot.

I am still unsure of the actual GP cost of the degradation of Torva. I think it will be fair as long as 10 hours doesn't cost more than 1m. Remember, RS Wiki has very low credibility on any game-changing updates like this.

It's just an inconvenience. People slaying a lot have to recharge quite often with barrows.

No they don't. It takes 15 hours of combat to degrade barrows armour to 0. That is a massive amount of time to be slaying for, and certainly doesn't mean that it is often recharged (unless you are a nutter like me and obsesively recharge barrows every 45 minutes).

Anything else that degrades that I'm able to think of just isn't worth using anymore (or never was worth using)

Might want to read everything ;)

Degrading is overblown; I used Barrows since release for slayer/bosses/pvp. Even when I got Bandos, I still used my barrows armor for boss soloing and pvp mini games. Torva though, is just on a whole other level of superiority. It's dumb to say it's "not worth it" or it's "a hassle".

Pro's:

1. Highest defense bonuses to date, save for a couple being lower than statius.

2. Same strength as Bandos.

3. Small prayer bonus

4. 400 LP boost, which is the biggest selling point. It's not only more difficult to be knocked out, and not only do you get 400 more LP before a fight, but brews/unicorns heal more!

Brews boost health by 17% at 99 constitution

No torva: 990 LP= 168 LP x4 = 672 LP per brew

Torva: 1390 LP = 236 x4 = 944 LP per brew

944-672 = 272

272 LP x 30 brews = 8160

8160/672 = 12+30 = 42

Who wouldn't want 12 extra brews worth of health on a typical GWD/nex trip? Or even for dangerous pvp/pvp mini game warring, as it's quite difficult to die in the first place. If you add a unicorn stallion to that, you get even more healing! The only drawbacks are degrading, how can you be that stingy anyway?

Comparing barrows to Ancient armor is a little inaccurate. Ancient armor is 10x what barrows costs to repair. Nevertheless, I suppose if you have 600m to buy a full set, then paying 6m for repairs is nothing to you.

This armor could drop to 50m, and the repair expenses would still be a joke. Chaotics supposedly cost 200k/hour to maintain, but everyone who has used chaotic knows that isn't anywhere close unless you spend 10 hours in multi combat constantly taking hits without hesitation. There's an extremely rare amount of instances that occurs.

Even at 10x the repair cost, the amount of extra money you'll get from the much, much longer trips more than exceeds the expense. That's not even counting situational difference gains, like the difference between winning and losing a pvp fight.

I don't love the idea of degrading armor/weapons, but I don't detest it either. Barrows has really been my only experince with this, as I don't own any chaotic items. But with barrows, I never seemed to notice or care until it says that it has degraded to 25. Then I just go repair it for pretty cheap in my POH. The armor lasts plenty long that I can seem to use it for weeks without having to repair (depending on how much I use combat, which hasn't been a lot lately).

Still, I think that Jagex has made a good decision for higher level items to degrade and cost something extra past the initial purchase. They are the best armor/weapons in the game...

I don't have a problem with degrading armors most of the time. I use my chaotic rapier for nearly everything, and I slay in a verac skirt and Fighter torso. The verac skirt degrades sometimes, as does my chaotic rapier, and then I go recharge/fix them.

Recently though, I have been bursting rock lobsters for crimson charms. I am using Battle Robes + Sol. The problem is, that even when I recharge them at the same time, they degrade at different times without fail. It is quite annoying to be bursting along, and then your hood degrades fully. Then 2 lobster pulls later, your robe bottoms bite the dust. And lastly, a good 5-6 pulls after that, the robe top goes. This is what annoys me.

I cannot be the only lower-middle class, 120+ slayer who uses veracs instead of bandos to slay, am I?

When using rune/dragon armor, I cannot peity an entire task successfully without needing to possibly switch to guthans to heal. With veracs I can and I look damn good doing it, too. (If I had a unicorn, I would be using proselyte to be honest...)

You have these insanely powerful weapons and armors that may require a tad bit of repair every now and then...by the time you're able to afford them I am quite sure the repair costs are the least of your worries. The powers of a demi-god does have its setbacks...
