I'm sick of seeing things like those in title. People calling each other nerds, no lifers, ugly, acne riddled, etc. etc. etc.

You don't know who they are. You don't know what they're like. You have NO IDEA what they look like or what they do. They could be a 46 year old CEO of some company for all you know. They could be a mother of 4 who works from home. Point is, you DON'T KNOW, so shut the [bleep] up about it.

And in terms of calling people nerds, we're all playing Runescape. We're all at least partially "nerds". It's not something to be ashamed of. But when you use it to insult someone, it just sounds stupid - you're playing the same game. Just because someone is a higher or lower level doesn't make them a nerd or a noob, it just means that maybe they like to play more or less. Or more efficiently or less efficiently.

I keep public chat off almost all the time now, especially if I have to go through somewhere like the GE or a skilling spot. The insulting is just overwhelming and annoying. That's one of two upsides to bots - less annoying trash talking.

Well, what if i characterize persons out of their behaviour and not look? Would it be okay then?

I have to ask the same question really..

If I understand OP right, I think you were mainly talking about insulting someone about their physical appearance without actually seeing them - but examples are used which imply otherwise. There's nothing wrong with debating, or having a civil argument - so I guess I agree with OPs point about insulting/trolling in general (in an ideal world) .

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." - Friedrich Nietzsche

You're talking about a game that involves mostly younger teenagers who don't know how to express themselves properly. They are frustrated because you have achieved something that they have not achieved. Understand that it's a game that takes time and dedication. Obviously if you've invested a vast amount of time into something, you tend to be more dedicated and more personal with it. Mix that with a group of people who can't properly express themselves and you get what is found in RuneScape. The other end of the spectrum, superiority, also works similarly. A lot of the time there's a reason why people play RuneScape rather than just quitting it altogether. I'm sure at one point or another most people played RuneScape to get away from stresses in real life, and those stresses carry onto RuneScape. So, this can not only explain the previous situation, but it can also contribute to the negative attitude that people have even if they're superior. To, pretty much, bully as many people as they can. Since they CAN in a game.

That by no means makes any of it better. The only thing it does show though is that it usually involves those people who are unable to withhold emotions. Usually from younger age groups. So the best thing to do (just like in real life) is to ignore it. Don't take it personal, because it isn't.

Just kidding. This really gets on my nerves whenever I'm playing too. Usually (but not always) it's the lower levels that will beg you for money and then when you don't give it to them they start calling you names.

Finally on here to update that I have officially quit! It's been fun.

Why do you care if people insult you. If they insult you it's either because you have something they're jealous of, or because (in the case of a discussion) you are right and they can't get over it. Either ways they give you superiority from the moment they insult you, so yeah. Why worry. They're more worried than you are.

Oh and, the public chat thing. You don't have to turn it off. That's just feeding the trolls. They want to annoy you to the point you isolate yourself. Put them on ignore and still dare to face the crowd, they don't have to influence you to that point.

As the poster a little way up the thread said, socially maladjusted morons are socially maladjusted morons. I would however disagree with turning public chat off. Rather, you can use it as an opportunity to demonstrate to the insulting individual why this method of discourse is counterproductive.

To give an example, the other day I ported to Seers to chop a single maple log for a quest. I went to the nearest two trees, one of which already had a chap chopping it, and started chopping the vacant tree. Just when I'd got my log, the other chap said, "please get away you loser." Startled by the juxtaposition of 'please' and 'loser', I tapped the teleport button by reflex. What I should've done is spent the next hour training firemaking and woodcutting using those trees, to demonstrate to the chap that insults are not a good way of getting people to do what you want.

You're on a GAME where you know next to nothing about the person talking to you. Just ignore it. If you can't ignore it, that's what the public chat filter is for.

They don't even know you and are trying to get under your skin, and based off this rant, it has worked.

Im especially sick of when someone asks for money, then I say no, then they call me a douche, or tell me to suck..., or they pull a your mom joke. It doesn't bother me, but I find the logic a total joke. Then a minute later they ask again and try to convince me I don't need 1M because my armour is 300M...its a joke.

You really need to do something with your attitude or your tolerance if you're so easily offended by these insults.

Nice sentiments. However, it is more than anything an idealistic approach. It's human nature to be offended. Accordingly, people object to being mocked. Especially if the troll is stalking them, for example. Personally, I've seen some of my friends flip completely at being continually mocked in this way. To the guy that started the rant, I'd try to apply what Silvertaler said and, when you can't because it's too hard, rant.

I read an interesting book and in it the author talked about what he named levels of non-disturbance. And that's basically what you allow or don't allow yourself to be offended by.

For instance, if somebody walked around naked on the side walk, some people would laugh, some people would frown, some people would get angry or upset, everybody has a different reaction. Then they would get home, they would tell their family "Oh I saw a guy walk naked on the street, it was so funny!" or "I saw a damned lunatic walk around naked today, I hope he gets jail time! Kids live on this street for Christ's sake!". The guy walking naked didn't make those people happy or upset. The people made themselves feel that way because of their thoughts and beliefs. The person that laughs chose to find the situation funny, the person that frowns chose to react in fear, anxiety, anger, etc.

Now once you understand that you can re-program yourself to stop getting upset over petty things, eg. other players calling you nerds. Most people don't get this though, and they allow themselves to be affected positively or negatively by what other people say or do.

I have to disagree. I've found that many people say things like that to make themselves feel better - just by insulting you (no matter what the response) they increase their false sense of "self confidence" or "self esteem" or whatever you want to call it.

In other news, just a couple days ago I was meleeing baby blues in between the blue dragon area and the black demon area in Tav dungeon (you know, the little spot with 3 baby blues) and a couple of people came in. One was fishing a slimy eel for whatever quest, Heroes I think. So they called me and another guy noobs and poor low levels, skipping over the fact that I was a higher combat than one of them and the cost of my leg armor being higher than the entire other one's outfit. I actually just laughed out loud at that. I do have experience with trolls both in real life and on the internet (4chan I'm looking at you <_<) and I can tell when people are being trolls and when they're just being bullies.

But for those of of you talking about how I was/am "offended," I was/am not. I am somewhat annoyed. It's not like I went and cried or punched a wall in real life, I came to a rants section and posted a rant. It takes barely any effort or necessity to post here, let alone do something on the internet.

I understand your rant perfectly, unfortunately Runescape is run amass with these kinds of players.

However, because there's so many of them at a given time, I've learnt to deal with these people and just get on with life. Kids like these are just trying (and failing hard) to get an arousal out of you. Makes me ashamed being a 15 year old guy tbh.

If you take people who say that seriously, I feel sorry for you. Things like that take an above-average level of stupidity.

The OP isn't saying they're offended or that they take what the trolls are saying seriously. They're just mad these people do it because its annoying and sometimes hard to ignore.

No need to call anybody stupid because you cannot interpret their post correctly.

I don't just do that, it's just not nice to call people stupid for no reason and doing so would lower myself to the level of the people this thread is about.

And I thought my weekends were good. ._.
