Royal Wedding

Not sure how having parents who are multi-millionaires makes you a commoner

Anyway I specifically booked my train back to University so I could miss the majority of the Wedding Coverage since I'm really not that interested in it. Thankfully it's only on 2 of the main TV channels and most shops (at least where I live are open) so there's plenty for people to do if they're also not interested.

I don't get all the hate for the royal family. They do much more good than bad, and a lot more good than a good chunk of the worlds population too. That's before you count the money they bring into the British economy.

Its more like poetic justice than actual wrong-doing (Just of the recent monarchs, mind you). The fact that there's still some Hapsburgs and royal families from the feudal ages still in title and some in power, just makes me upset. Centuries of oppression and now they're a show act.

Its only a show act because people don't know history: the tyrants, the struggle, and the freedom they take for granted today.

You cannot judge people on the actions of people hundreds of years before so lightly. You may call them tyrants, but at the time it was the only system that worked with the technology that was at hand. The Royal family, and most Royal families with histories are part of the tradition of countries and part of the story which created their country today. For Britain the Royal family is part of the story of how it gained indipendance from Catholocism, the struggle and balance between parliament, people and royalty, the story of great empires and epic battles. They are part of the countries National Identity, one of the few remaining links we have to the formation of our country, and many other countries around the world.

Being somebody involved with heritage, the saving of buildings/structures which represent our history and uniqueness as a country, I am very interested in the Royal family as part of our heritage.

Prince William himself probably (I am making an assumption here, but i'm fairly sure it's true) Has done more good in his life than anybody on these boards. This is mainly due to his work saving lives as a Royal Air force Search and Rescue co-pilot.

That's a fairly ridiculous statement to make, unless you've been secretely recording us and know what we all do with our lives. I mean for one I know at least two fully qualified doctors on TIF - they also save lives, don't they? It's also an assumption that ignores the fact that most people on these boards have a comparable lack of opportunity.

I was sure I typed 'most people' and not 'anybody', that was a mistake. Most people on these forums it is safe to say are not of working age or only do service jobs (me included). There may be the exception that do jobs which can be classed as having a large impact, such as being in the police, but for the majority, they are much more 'useless' than the two people getting married. People claiming they are useless and do nothing have done no research and could find out that it is not the case with minimal effort.

I agree that money can get you places in life, but if you truly try you can achieve as much if not more than those with money in a lot of situations. A lack of effort, inventiveness and initiative in many people's problem.

I'm training to become a psychologist/lawyer. Apparently me wanting to help people solve disputes/get better mental health fails in comparison to a prince.

That reminds me, anyone else remember when prince harry imitated a nazi?

When he was a teenager? Yes I do. I also dressed in a scream outfit at the same age, a friend of mine has dressed as a centurion. It's really bad to go outside in costume these days. Remember when he went to Afghanistan to serve with the British Army putting his life on the line?

Yes, and it got overhyped about just like this wedding. Everyday plenty of people die due to war-related injuries, and they barely make the news. One prince steps foot there and apparently it's a big deal. The royal family is almost exactly like any other family. Only difference: normal families don't make the news when they do every little thing.

And who said they did nothing? I certainly did not. I disagree with their titles; their ranks. I would like William to be referred to "William Smithy, Ph.D" rather than "Prince William". The great country that is/was Britain might of been founded by it's kings, fine, but nowadays we live in a post-liberal world but we still have figures from the out-dated, unpopular pre-Napoleonic feudal system.

Don't make me laugh. You seriously believe the Prince was up on the front lines? He was surrounded by more guards than the Presidental Secret Service, in a warzone that has not seen combat since 2001.

Agreed. This is exactly where my first post came from.

And judging by the opinions of both sides, I can safely assume this:

The people who don't care/dislike this wedding idea care more about their friend's friends' lives than they do about this.

The people who care about/like this wedding idea care so much about it, that if a member of their family died right now, then rather than be sad, they'd say 'meh, who cares! A british prince is getting married'

Feel free to correct me if my logic seems flawed.

Please use this vast resource of the internet you have available as it is a fact there has been a lot of combat in Afhganistan since activity started there. It is currently one of the most hostile areas on the planet. Considering his placement there was unknown, his 'protection' was limited, if there at all. He served as any regular soldier would have done.

They have the titles they have for the same reasons America Celebrates major figures in its past such as MLK, Washington and others. They are part of the heritage of the country, just like the Royals are. These leaders were no more unpopular than modern day leaders. Now the systems may seem outdated, but at the time it was all that was available and worked well with the technology available.

They are the closest link to our heritage we have with a living breathing link. I for one am proud to be part of a country that can appreciate it's past and not just throw it away because it is apparently outdated, even considering it makes millions of pounds per year for the country.

Where the hell did that come from? Please tell me how you make a link between somebody not caring about this wedding and caring about their friends more than somebody caring about it and not caring about anybody else? That just wreaks of trolling. Neither side has any less or any more moralistic or ethical ideas, so saying that is just absurd and downright insulting.

Could've had the day off work but most of us have chose to work it (as it'll be a quiet shift) and we get an extra day off next week instead. Wasn't planning on watching it anyway as I'm kinda sick of all the hype and coverage surrounding it already but hey.

Also saw that Rowan Atkinson has got an invitation to it. Lets hope he comes in character as Mr Bean and livens it up for everyone.

It isn't in the castle, It isn't in the mist, It's a calling of the waters, As they break to show, The new Black Death, With reactors aglow, Do you think your security, Can keep you in purity, You will not shake us off above or below

Oh so now you think I'm an idiot? Zone: area, region, territory. NOT the entire god damn country. There some areas of Afganistan, such as an British base, that is relatively peaceful.

Irrelevant. MLK, Washington, Lincoln, were not power figures from the feudal system (MLK wasn't even a politician). As you can see, I got no issue with Cameron or Obama. So it's not people in power than I immediately want to be removed.

"Worked well with the technology available"

Is this the second time you've said this? Who cares, I'm not saying to dismantle the royalty in 1610. I UNDERSTAND you can't go back in time and change history. But in 2011, living breathing royalty should not exist. Keep in mind, I only mean in titles. I don't want William dead, but I don't want him to be 'Prince'. Just William the goddamn lawyer, historian, whatever the hell he studied in St. Andrews, who is a descendant of the old British royal family.

What the [bleep] are you talkin' about? My mother would be terribly sad if my sister died right now.

EDIT: I see what you're doing now, and I agree. I'll follow you and stop with this never-ending garbage. While you may be proud of this feudal system you like Danq, I sure as hell wouldn't if I were you.

I'm just trying to figure out what this wedding is 'on par' with socially to the people who care about it. Question: how much can you truly care about this wedding?

It would be nice if you could do so without basically insulting anybody who cares about the wedding.

It is a large social event for the country bringing in millions of pounds for the economy, there are lots of reasons to care. For me, as I have said, being a student involved in heritage, I find it very interesting as they are a living link to the past unlike the stone links to the past i usually see. I also see them as a very important part of this countries history which shaped not only shaped itself, but the whole world into what it is today. For me, I am going to my girlfriends flat and watching it with her flatmates who are having a bit of a 'posh' day, drinking Pimms and eating cucumber sandwiches.

Prince William will evenetually become the Head of State, although with limited power, he will have a very high status and role within the country. He could have a very large impact on the future of not just this country but many around the world, the same for Kate Middleton.

For other people there will be other reasons to be interested, for example the Wedding dress and clothes of many attendees will be be in the spotlight, as well as the guests themselves.

The entire social event reminds me of that one wedding between 'rob and amber'. Overall, it'll bring money into the economy, mind you so does just about everything concerning britain.

As for william having high power/status, I see 2 huge flaws with that: he won't actually do anything politically to the country, and status, like I've said before, does not make him any more important.

Other people already control the country, not william. William isn't their prime minister, nor is he really the leader of anything. Thus, his 'power' is pretty low/diminished.

Status-wise, being named prince/king is just a flashy title with no real power behind it, unlike how it was back in the 1600s. I could go rename myself 'prince fourside of king', and that name wouldn't net me any more power than I already have.

As for the rest of your post, I can more or less sum it up with the words 'why should we care'.

I'm not saying you should care, I'm saying that even though you don't, other people do.

The Royal family may not have any active roles, but they do have constitutional power. They are as much of a safety net for the country as the government is a safety net for a power hungry royal. If they were opposed enough, they could declare war, declare peace, get rid of government etc. They do have power. constitutionally, as king (Or queen currently), they are the leader of the country and have final say on anything concerning the country as a whole.

I despise royalty with an unbridled passion. Wont be watching; and people are saying this is bringing in millions to the economy..... Yea, but we're losing millions at the same time because everyone has a day off work.

Look guys... I absolutely must be a mass baby-seal murderer!

Wrong. Thee is no legal requirement for business' to give employees the day off or to stop trading. They themselves are allowed to choose whether to let their employees have the day off, watch the wedding or have a normal day of trading.

Whether or not the Royal family are worth having is a pretty futile discussion - the Royals have been part of Britains national identity for a very long time, and thus anything to do with them is a pretty big deal. Whether you like it or not, this is the truth.

RIP TET
