I use the finger a lotto get back at people I don't appreciate. I searched Google and it doesn't seem to have a solid answer of where thisgesture came from. Any ideas on where this trend originated? Really, a significant amount of the gestures we use are just meaningless gestures unless you know the context behind them. They have to KNOW it's supposed to be offensive, something which most people you're likely to run into will. Really though, humans being human, we're bound to come up with gestures to use in an offensive manner, among other gestures used in other manners. The finger by itself is almost meaningless; finger someone in a bar and you'll probably get a different reaction from fingering someone on the street. If you finger someone in a car, most people probably won't react; if they do, they have some anger issues going far deeper then just the middle finger from a random stranger. Do I care? Depends on the context of where and why I get the finger. If, say, I got the finger because of my poor driving, and it was really bad driving, I'd feel bad. If I got the finger from someone passing me while driving like 10k/h under the speed limit on icy roads, I don't care, I don't want to crash my car. In a bar, it depends on what else came with the finger, and other factors such as levels of alcohol consumed, being conscious of what others might think would have a significant effect.
