The middle finger

What do you guys think about it? Is it just a gesture that doesn't really bother you or something you take seriously? I use the finger a lot

to get back at people I don't appreciate. I searched Google and it doesn't seem to have a solid answer of where this

gesture came from. Any ideas on where this trend originated?

I got fingered once but that was just for fun and I didn't take it personally because

I knew it was just a gesture that doesn't mean anything.

I refuse to be hurt by something as trivial as a word or gesture. Neither do any long term harm if you simply ignore them.

Some theories include English longbowmen fingering Frenchmen to show that they can pull a longbow; this is related to french people cutting off the middle fingers of Englishmen they catch so said Englishman cannot use a longbow. Or I heard one about English noblewomen not wearing rings on their middle fingers.

Really, a significant amount of the gestures we use are just meaningless gestures unless you know the context behind them. They have to KNOW it's supposed to be offensive, something which most people you're likely to run into will.

Really though, humans being human, we're bound to come up with gestures to use in an offensive manner, among other gestures used in other manners. The finger by itself is almost meaningless; finger someone in a bar and you'll probably get a different reaction from fingering someone on the street. If you finger someone in a car, most people probably won't react; if they do, they have some anger issues going far deeper then just the middle finger from a random stranger.

Do I care? Depends on the context of where and why I get the finger. If, say, I got the finger because of my poor driving, and it was really bad driving, I'd feel bad. If I got the finger from someone passing me while driving like 10k/h under the speed limit on icy roads, I don't care, I don't want to crash my car. In a bar, it depends on what else came with the finger, and other factors such as levels of alcohol consumed, being conscious of what others might think would have a significant effect.

Basically, I'm saying it's complicated.

lolololololol

this thread is about over now haha

I personally don't take offense to it, and use it jokingly myself when I pass by my friends at random. it's just a stupid gesture. it doesn't hurt anyone. to derive offense from a geometric shape is proof of egotisticalism.

I just made up a word.

If a random stranger tried to finger me I wouldn't take it all that well.

Lol...someone tried to finger me once. Managed to stop them before they did that dirty gesture.

In all seriousness, things like these make no sense. How is one finger meaner/not as mean as the others. From what I currently get: thumbs up is praising, middle finger is insulting.

I guess if you really wanted to do something interesting, then you could give someone both and see how they respond...

English education taught me the bow story, American education taught me it was the same thing but with Americans and cannons in the civil war.

But I don't really have responses to hand gestures, to me they're fairly pointless.

I don't think I've ever used it. I think it's pretty silly/stupid. If I'm pissed off I'd rather use my words than a gesture that doesn't say anything other than "I'm pissed at you," which isn't exactly helpful.

What if someone did the middle finger and the thumbs up at the same time? :-k

Doesn't bother me at all. I find the act in itself kind of amusing. The only time I've seen it recently was when a guidette and an old couple both tried to move into the middle lane at the same place at the same time.

I'll give you a hint: It wasn't the old couple who flipped the bird.

The only time I think most people seriously use it is for driving. It's called the "Deerfoot Salute" where I live, Deerfoot being the most major road in the city.

I used it a few times if I get really pissed off, but it's a gesture just like any insult really. I suppose it's just one of those things that people do without thinking about it. I mean, you just flip a finger and it's done. No need to think further about it.

I use a LOT of hand grestures, but not really the middle finger. I find other gestures much more effective. Though if I ever use it, its definately a "lol [bleep] you" thing.

After I posted that I got the finger from some chick last night. Loled and thought of this thread.

That's what the V sign is for. Meaning 'eff off' basically, as it would show that the archers had the fingers required to fire a bow.

Different meanings of fingers:

Thumb up: good job

Thumb down: bad job

index finger-pointed: get someone's attention

Middle finger-pointed: insult

Ring finger-pointed: 'hey you, I'm married'

Pinkey-pointed: 'hey look, I'm british'

Pinkey-pointed toward mouth: 'I'm an enemy of austin powers!'
