ilovecuttingyews
Considering my bedroom is ~13C when I wake up, I need my hot shower in the morning to thaw my body. Maybe one day I'll try it, but during winter? No thanks.

Kirschen
Whenever I took a shower, I sometimes spent the last 30 seconds to switch it on freezing cold so it didn't feel like that for 5 minutes when I left the bathroom, not knowing a cold shower was actually beneficial. I might try a cold shower tomorrow morning since they're rather fun to take sometimes (I love the cold). Of course, a full cold shower might be torture. Albel
Only time I take them is if it's been a long day and I'm sweaty. I'm not a fan of being cold, even if it has it benefits I'll stick with warm showers. Tesset
I feel like part of the reason for the heat is the fact that hot water cleans better than cold water. My skin is finally getting softI'll scrub until the damn thing comes off

Carl
Haven't really had a cold shower since I used to swim competitively, that was a few years back. I stopped swimming altogether and haven't had a cold shower since. Guess I know whats on the agenda in the morning. EDIT: hot water cleans better than cold water.other way around, sir Oh? That, I didn't know. Going from experience, though, I have far more luck cleaning the house and any hard surfaces (Tables, pots, etc.) with warm/hot water than I do with cold water. Just like a dishwasher works better on hot, washing machine, etc. Care to elaborate, Zeno? RIP Michaelangelopolous
Tesset
Warm water dissolves solids better than cold water does. It also does a better job of killing germs. Why would cold water be better? Zeno
Warm water dissolves solids better than cold water does. It also does a better job of killing germs. Why would cold water be better?the colder the water is, the denser the molecules are, soap is for killing germs, all water dissolves water about the same unless the structure is dense and needs heat to break some of the bonds, which is unlikely going to be sticking to our skin that bad further research shows that cleaning with hot water then cold water yields the best results for cleaning ones face or other areas Stats[hide][/hide]Click for my adventurer's log

Guest Rob
I created a timeline consisting of my thoughts in the cold shower. 0.00 - 0.30: OH MY GOD WHY AM I DOING THIS I HATE TIPIT0.30 - 2.00: Okay, I can feel my limbs again. I guess this isn't too bad.2.00 onwards: Oh sweet jesus this is amazing. I'll have to do this more often; it was really quite nice, other than the first 30 seconds. Randox
Okay, now I'm kinda tempted to try this, despite my dislike for being cold. I mean, if after a minute its not gonna fly, I can always thaw myself out. Back in a bit, or this is going to keep me up all night, and honestly, there are other thoughts I would rather have keep me awake then 'is tipit full of BS or is there something to that shower thing'. Riku3220
That was complete hell. 7 minutes of icy, frozen, hell. I think if I had stayed in any longer I would have gotten hypothermia. The last few minutes were actually worse because I was shivering the entire time. There is absolutely no joy to be found in a cold shower for me... Randox
Well...[bleep] NO. Holy Jesus, how did someone take that for 7 minutes? I think I lasted about a minute before I turned the heat on. Now, maybe it's because I pretty much used full cold, which at midnight in the winter around here would probably make that water not too far above freezing (it felt about the same as plunging my arm into ice water). I'm thinking about 50F tops. Maybe that was too cold (then again, I've gone swimming in the Atlantic which is only 53.6 in the summer here (though I normally wear a wetsuit for that if I plan on being in for more than 10 minutes or so). Anyway, at the minute mark with the numbness spreading, I bailed. I don't care how amazing it feels after however many minutes, its not worth getting used to. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow with like room temperature water (which is still cold in my books), rather than 'it feels like that time I got paid to run around someone's house in a foot of snow after being in their outdoor hot tub for 15 minutes and then got tackled into a snow bank' water. riku3220, my hat goes off to you. I can't believe you took that for so long. You were still freezing your arse off while I was cranking up the heat in an effort to soak up warmth like some kind of thermal capacitor. muggiwhplar
Gotta stay in till it feels warm or else you're wasting your time I'm at the point where I'll be in shock for like 5 seconds tops, and it feels warm in under a minute. Kinda sucks considering I enjoy the shock :\ If you're having trouble tolerating the pain, you just gotta learn to quit trying to resist the pain and accept it/relax. The more you try to resist the pain, the more you'll suffer.

Randox
Okay, well from experience, at the temperature I used, it will never feel warm. As soon as I get used to a temperature, it feels cold to me by default. The only way to stop that from happening is to get the water warm enough that my body temperature rises, and it has to try to cool down (which obviously forces me to feel warm in an effort to get me to move to some place cooler). Not surprised this works for other people though. Most people, when they go swimming in the lake that I live on, they 'get used to it' and the water feels okay to them. Me, I just get progressively colder. I don't seem to feel temperature the same way as most people. Sometimes I wonder if I froze to death in a past life and it carried over, or if its because I'm so damn skinny that I just can't keep heat in. I have the same problem with any swimming pool. I can't stay in for more than about 20 minutes at a time, or parts of my body start turning blue (this would be around 65 I think). I was shivering head to toe before I got my whole legs in the shower, and my teeth were doing a machine gun imitation by 15 seconds.

muggiwhplar
Just measured the temperature of my shower for shits and giggles... 49 degrees Fahrenheit  I don't think the water was this cold when I started a couple months ago... I just got back from a week-long vacation in Florida to visit my parents and the coldest their showers would be was room temperature. When I got back home and started taking cold showers again, it was a lot harder this time around since the water's a lot colder than when I started. They actually were really painful w/o any warmth to accompany it, but now everything's back to normal :)
Giordano
I sorta just tried this and I don't really remember the cold now. I entered the bathroom confident, but feeling the cool air after taking my clothes off I became hesitant. I put my foot in it and said [bleep] it. So I put on the warm water, got in, and gradually turned down the tempature. Got a little bit of shock towards the end after I pushed it almost to the max. What's really neat about it though, I didn't feel the cold air getting out - which I used to hate so I stayed in the shower till I dried off a bit. Also since the water was cold I wanted to get out sooner, and there was no cold air issue so I dried off/hygienated myself faster, so this was the fastest shower I conducted in years. So damn right it has merits, but I can't start at freezing just yet though. But cold showers are definitely better. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."
