Cold Showers

6am and I felt like being a crazy weirdo and trying this and I am moments out of the coldest shower ever. I feel so bloody alive.

As everyone said the first 30 seconds are like a test. The cold shock nearly sent me demented, I tried so hard not to scream and curse all that was sacred... Oh my god its brilliant when you get used to it. :D Mad the way your body makes it feel warm.

I am buzzing after it. So going to try this, kinda feels like your overcoming a fear right away when you get up? :D

Thanks so much for this, gonna try this more in future!

Screw that. It's like 5F here in the mornings. I deal with the cold all day, last place I want it is in my shower.

I used to do everything with cold water, like washing hands, showers, washing hair, brushing teeth. But a couple years ago I started using warm water and just slowly stopped using cold water.

I'm tempted to switch back.

You'll feel warmer in freezing weather after a cold shower than a hot one

I'll feel warmer in a hot shower than a cold shower. Cold weather outside is cold no matter how you slice it.

I enjoyed it more than i thought I would after the first 1 minute or so of gasping for breath. Just curious are you actually washing in these showers or just standing there? Cuz I washed my hair with shampoo and my body with shower gel.

It would be a waste of your time and water otherwise.

Tried a cold shower this morning and was only able to bear 45s-1m of it (wasn't able to wash my back so easily in the cold water). Once it was over, it actually felt rather good since I didn't feel that tired and was able to be more energetic. Going to do this again next time. :P

I sorta just tried this and I don't really remember the cold now.

I entered the bathroom confident, but feeling the cool air after taking my clothes off I became hesitant. I put my foot in it and said [bleep] it. So I put on the warm water, got in, and gradually turned down the tempature. Got a little bit of shock towards the end after I pushed it almost to the max.

What's really neat about it though, I didn't feel the cold air getting out - which I used to hate so I stayed in the shower till I dried off a bit. Also since the water was cold I wanted to get out sooner, and there was no cold air issue so I dried off/hygienated myself faster, so this was the fastest shower I conducted in years.

So damn right it has merits, but I can't start at freezing just yet though. But cold showers are definitely better.

This is basically what happened to me. I went from the hottest it could to go the coldest it could go. I'll start out tomorrow a little colder and go from there.

I have occasionally had the cold shower 'shock' whilst the warm water takes its time to flow. Usually the cold lasts for about for 30 seconds, which I think is long enough, personally.

As soon as it touches you, you will instantly feel more awake - on days I have slept in a bit too far, I will put it on cold for up to one minute, and I will move like hell when I'm out of the shower.

Took one this morning. Worked very successfully I think. Made my showers a lot shorter too.

I did it too and I agree, it was much shorter.

Do we know what kind of temperature is best? My shower has several "settings." Scolding hot, hot, lukewarm, cold, ice cold. I did it this morning on the "cold" setting. Should I be doing it on the ice cold setting?

It depends on how you want to approach it. I'm personally making it cold enough so that it's considered "cold" so that it's less of a shock, although you can go ahead and make it ice cold if you want to.

And yeah, I've had a problem in the morning (more so on cold days) where I would shower for 20 mins+. With a cold shower it takes about 2-4.

I am Lord Supreme of the long shower. It doesn't bother me though, since I factor how long I take into my showers. I think I average 15 minutes most of the time, but I think my record is like 30. This house limits a bit though since the fan (and the light over the shower) are on a timer, and it maxes out at 30. I normally try to get out at 10 to 15 minutes left.

Oddly enough, if I have to, I can shower in like 2 minutes (I'll be a bit less clean though since that only leaves time for one go at the shampoo, and it doesn't get any time to sit and do its work). But only if I have to.

Speaking of which...

It costs about $1 for a 15 minute hot shower here. That's $30/mo saved on the electric bill by taking cold showers.

Heh, I figured that would come up.

Yeah, it is kinda a waste of money, there is no getting around that. Considering the price of water here, a cold shower is effectively free I think, though if the furnace is already running to warm out the houses heating system, I don't think it has to work any harder to do a shower too. Perhaps I should be trying to time my showers to match up with the furnace so that there is no incremental cost

It's a gigantic waste of water too.

It might come from growing up on well, where the water was effectively unlimited, and I never even thought about the heating cost. I had years to hone my bad habbit. Now I consider the shower to be like my 'holy place' where everything is just fine, and I can think things through in peace. Even if I was into the cold shower thing, I would probably keep them going quite long because I do need that time to think and relax.

And maybe once I have a place to myself (or me plus 1), the cost of my showers will convince me to change my ways (or someone else will force me too). In my current arrangement, the cost is so spread out that it doesn't matter.

I'll try this if I'm having a really hard time getting awake tomorrow morning.

Had one this morning on the coldest setting, rejuvenating.

Even if I could only stand 45 seconds of it at coldest, I found it more enjoyable and awakening than a 10 minute lukewarm shower which sometimes encouraged me to be more sleepy because I was already used to the warmth of the bed sheets waking up. I have to admit, it will be worth seeing me bear longer cold showers.

I've tried a semi-cold shower before (like halfway between the coldest and right between hot and cold) and I found it extremely hard to breathe. I don't have any kind of breathing problems like asthma so idk why I found myself gasping for breath like someone was sucking all of the oxygen out of the shower. But I'll try a shower on the coldest setting tomorrow morning and see how it is.

Come support my max total goal here.

Briobe122's 10-step guide to staking:

1. Get cleaned

2. Vow to never stake ever again! (very important)

3. welfare tds and get claws

4. kill glacors til i get boots

5. bandos ffa or more tds til i have around 50m

6. realize that it is far too hard to rebuild using steps 3, 4, and 5

7. give up the vow to never stake again

8. go back staking and make your bank back

9. if you failed at step #8, Go back to step #1

10. if you succeed at step #8, you will eventually feel the need to make money for rich people stuff, have a bad day of staking, then get cleaned anyways

Pain is just weakness leaving the body.

It's likely the thermal shock you experienced. I got that numbness and breathing when I try a cold shower. Worse when the cold water traveled down my spine on my back. You should try it on coldest, even for under a minute.
