I'm not even aware of the concept being put through a practical test, though admittedly I am not exactly all up to date on space propulsion. Actually, I only found out about the nuclear thermal rockets a little while ago. I don't suppose they actually understand how a rocket works? The_Mather1 Posted November 22, 2012 Share Posted November 22, 2012 Solar sails are being used, however only on a small scale, somewhere in between testing and actual deployment.Examples are IKAROS, Cosmos, NanoSail-D and several probes that used them in addition to other methods of thrust. And Randox, this was in astrotechnology class, and the task was to choose a subject, research it properly, write a text about it then hold a presentation. Added to that ion drives are actually really simple, working by ionizing a propellant (for example by sending an electric current through it) and using either the electromagnetic or electrostatic principle to eject it at an extreme velocity.
