I wonder if this will be comparable to the "MiniClip" generation. It's the first time RuneScape will be on TV - do you guys think it will affect the community at all?

Well, it's nice to see that they finally made the jump to TV ...

 

If it does pull in new players, then yeah, it could herald a new generation of Miniclippers (or whatever we'll call these new guys). I'm kind of sceptical of the power of this advert, though.

I don't see why they need a new special url for it.

Surely www.runescape.com is easier to remember than www.playrunescape.com for coming away from a TV ad.

 

I mean when you want to find the website of something you saw on TV or a store you generally automatically try www.[company/gamename].com (or .co.uk for ukers, though tend to try com first)

 

Also tbh I doubt the TV ad will do a HUUUUGGGGGGE amount, it's probably airing on one of the obscure channels that isn't one of the big ones people watch (meaning itv 1 and 2, ch 4, ch5, e4) and even if it is on the big channels it'll probably be wedged in with the toy adverts only ever shown early morning in the kids shows.

Depending on how widespread it is across different channels then this could potentially draw in a pretty big audience. This is definitely a decision made by the investors to try and make RS more mainstream.

Lol ok I just went to actually view the ad, which in its twenty seconds of glory is at best extremely truncated and pretty random. Don't see how that'll pull anyone in exactly :P

I'm gonna make a completely wild guess and presume that they'll count hits on playrunescape.com, which will roughly gauge the advert's success?

I'm glad that they're trying to reach out to a new audience, but I'm not sure that ad is the way to do it. If I saw that ad and then looked at what the game is actually like, I'd be pretty put off and probably wouldn't play.

No doubt that is true, yet the great irony at work here is two-fold; firstly half of us already went to that link to see what the difference is (and many others will no doubt do the same) which skews the figures AND by using a url that's harder to remember and use later they probably will actually cause less people to come to it. I'd be willing to wager that most people seeing the advert will more likely just remember 'runescape' and end up entirely avoiding the playrunescape url.

I don't like trailers that have 'not actual game footage' tags as I feel it's false advertising. New players will be in for a shock when they log on to play.

That has to be one of the most useless adverts I've seen in a long time, even considering the fact it is nothing like the game.

Love how it shows such dynamic combat in the trailer, yet in-game...

Players arent stupid. They know that games dont look like the trailers.

Well I don't know what it's like in the UK, but here in germany there are literally dozens of MMOs that have ads running on the TV. The first one may have interested people, but (at least for me personally) with all of them running so often, you don't really take them seriously anymore and sure as hell are not interested enough to check it out. And tbh, the Runescape trailer is pretty weak. It has nothing to do with the game(which doesn't *have* to be bad and isn't unusual), but at the same time it by far doesn't use the potential of cinematic trailers to make this game feel epic.

I just watched the trailer...and it's just cut together from the cinematic one, basically just some scenes of fighting against the troll jumbled together. No explanation whatsoever, nothing that tells you why this game is good, nothing that builds up a connection to the viewer and over far too quickly.

 

 

Seriously, this is a *horrible* trailer. It's really, really bad. And now they're paying money to put this on Tv channels >.<

If they show this on the popular channels in the UK, we might very well get many, many new members of RS. That would be great :)

That clip put together from the other video thing we had is cute and all for current players. We can look at it and go 'aww thats cute' which is great and all. From some of our perspectives it doesnt necessarily look childish because we know the game itself that its representing isnt necessarily childish.

 

However imo it does probably seem a bit childish for people who dont know the game and might be joining. So unless they put this on children channels at their prime times. Im not too sure how successful it would be.

 

This advert would probably be more successful if it was adapted for internet banner adverts or something. One of those irritating options that many people block and dont see anyway. =p

 

I mean I can fully imagine seeing that advert on tv when im watching kids programs with my nephew or niece or something.. Good thing im there to warn them about the dangers of gambling and tell my brothers not to let them play. :rolleyes: (Seriously) Uncle Bazzaminxer is a mean old bean. I find it hard to take the advert seriously if it was played at most other times/channels.
