SSH becoming redundant

Legionwizard

Recommended Posts

I've resubscribed not long ago and hearing here and there that the SSH (Shadow Silk Hood) in Daemonheim is not preferred by high level dg people. On the one hand it would not surprise me. With some luring techniques, and the impression that mages and necromancers show up all the time in higher floors, I feel it's somewhat overrated (quick to traverse a room with some prayer on to deflect non cleared rooms, not to mention easy food gathering).

Opinions? Will I be an outcast at level 90-100 dg for throwing away the SSH and binding something with more defense?

Additionally, I'm currently looking into a more non-conventional setup with my eyes on the EoC approaching. With an emphasis on mage, what would you get? On of my ideas, based on many assumptions I feel are vague and non confirmed I'd say:

Surgebox (225 charges or infinite like outside surgebox?)

Staff/Wand (asked for this on rsof, still expecting an answer)

Blood necklace (had drop not long ago, but did not bind), with a celestial robe while searching for necklace

At level 100 I'd rebind either a celestial piece or I bind a primal rapier to hybrid.

i plan on getting rid of ssh and binding robe top+bottom after 100 dung.

Magic has the advantage of being able to trap/bind monsters to avoid damage, not to mention the common amount of necromancers and mages on higher dungeons and overall many enemies that arent affected by the hood at all.

Bet bet is to bind a plate for now over a hood. At 100 dg get some gaunts until you find a hex/bneck. Even with randoms on w67 or whatever the equivalent world is now, most floors are going to be in the 12-20 minute region, so you'll be dehooded for such a large % of most floors that the hood isnt worth it.

Don't think about binds for the EoC yet, it's at least a couple of months away, and robe top/bottom are wastes of binds currently.

Blood necklace (had drop not long ago, but did not bind)

wot.

Blood neck is one of the more useful binds in dg, I'm surprised you didn't break your hood for it...

Get your best platebody as a defensive bind instead.

Blood neck is pretty useless before 100 unless you're 99 or so, otherwise it'll murder your xp/h, or floor times. They're common enough now not to bother going out of your way to bind.

Right with you on the plate though.

Yes a hood is rather redundant and awful. It simply doesn't cover a lot of monsters and because of the frequency mages, you are effectively naked, so to speak, in a lot of the rooms. It does have an advantage though in certain rooms(where there no mages) but even if you are tanking high level creatures you still have no defense from the hood alone. Back when I use to have a hood, if I was potted I could solo rooms that I otherwise would have never been able to, but that was about it. I am often on teams where the others are hooded, so I end up tanking the bulk of things, and that is indeed annoying, but still manageable. Ideally, after a certain level, no one should have a hood. Plate is your best option.

In short, if you are going to be DG'ing on the official DG world, teams will rarely, if ever, care whether you have a hood or not, they will accept you. It will be somewhat annoying because others have a hood and you don't, but still manageable. If you are going to be DG'ing with elite clans or worlds or teams, then you will need to get rid of your hood and they will rather like you for it.

Not if you know how to handle it.

That' somewhat true but even so, but it requires additional care and hassle and over an extended time that can be a bit much.

Hood is a good third bind, and because it's semi-rare, people bound it before 100, because it's also a passable second bind. If you are closing in on 100 and you aren't terribly unhappy with hood right now, you might as well keep it. But there's no shame in breaking it for plate and getting gaunts/efs/maybe platelegs at 100. Those aren't terribly useful though (compared to hex/bn, or even hood).

I personally did 118-120 with no platebody and a blood necklace (and a bit of leeching). I still got (roughly) the same XP/hr.

I wouldn't say that it's more difficult, but it definitely required more concentration. Knowing luring from PvM, and having to heavily flash prayers (switching between magic, range, and soulsplit while having meleers lured) helped a lot.

The past few times I've got a shadow silk hood during a floor, and used it for the rest, I have to say... I kinda miss it. :(.

I'm no pro at dungeoneering or anything, but Dungeonsweepers have this great guide on everything dungeoneering, and on their binds page they say that SSH is the best defensive bind, and that for optimal exp you should bind both ssh and plate at level 100, provided you have a chaotic staff on your team already and you don't have a hexhunter. They also only advise a plate bind below 100 only if you don't get a SSH drop.

Link to said guide.

From my journey to 91 DG sog far, I've tried both Plate and hood, and I find hood much more usefull, at least with 99 def, enabling you to avoid a lot of rooms and take little to no damage from combat due to rpayer and mostly only being attacked by one monster. Never found mages disbaling it much of a problem either, we have prayer for reason.

Now once EoC htis, that's another story.

Hybriding penalties in the EoC mean that equipping a shadow silk hood will actually reduce the effectiveness of your platebody's ranged defence, so it's not looking good for hood :P

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.
