Help! What should I play?

I don't know. I tried the Alto Sax, and I hate it. I want a peacefull sound that isn't lound and booming... I'm not sure if I want to play the guitar, because I'll be called a poser. What do you think would be good for me? I'm 5'2", about 90lbs. I was thinking maybe the flute or picillo (sp?) but I would love to play some sort of common string instrument.

Don't see where your weight and height go into it.

Height - Taller people find the cello easier to play but smaller instuments harder.

Weight - Not really an issue unless you have weak legs and can't stand for prologed periods (2 hrs+) in a band smashing out live shows etc.

Try the guitar... If you dont like classicals/austics (spelling??) you can always try electrics or bass's if they are too hard and you want a softer sound. Try a 12 stringed version. They have a better, nicer softer sound and arent that much harder than a 6 string (trust me i used to play one) if not look to the woodwind and brass areas, Claranet, Trumpet, Oboe, Trumbone, Saxaphone.

Remember all instruments have more than one type... One size doesn't fit all. ie: You may not like the alto sax but may enjoy a different sized one a they are different to play but still have a similar sound.

Don't see where your weight and height go into it... but violin maybe? It's relatively easy to learn and there's a lot of stuff out there for it.

violin's not that easy to learn, and if you don't stick with it for at least half a year, you won't make any progress.

(it takes about half a year for a player to get used to the strain on the collarbone/shoulder) yeah. it actually does hurt for quite awhile, haha

If you don't know what instrument to play don't play an instrument. What's the point.

Maybe a flute or clarinet is good for you...

Piano is a good starter instrument - it teaches you the base skills (rhythm, notation reading, general pitch recognization) the easiest and the skills you get from it are easily transferrable to other instruments.

If you really want to learn an instrument, and want something relatively soft, learn the acoustic/classical guitar. Don't worry about being labelled a poser, do it for yourself.

A clarinet has a beautiful, pleasant sound- that might be what you're looking for. :)

edit: A stringed instrument, you say? Hmm... you could always settle for a ukulele although it's an acquired taste for some.. :P

Harmonica 8)

Seriously, you can carry a harmonica in your pocket, its pretty easy to pick up the basics, and you can teach yourself (just get yourself a how-to book for harmonica). Only downside is that you can't sing while playing it.

What everyone has been saying about the piano is true, too. Knowing how to noodle around on piano is really helpful for learning all other music.

I'd say you should just play whatever instrument would be best for the music you like. If you like jazz, don't play the cello, etc. etc. Other than that, piano is pretty good and can play just about every style of music. Myself, I play the alto sax, piano, and am learning guitar. I rather enjoy all of them.
