Game Informer brings Runescape to many eyes

Featured Replies

In this month's Game Informer, I read the editor's note about three new content sections. I decided to rush, and check them out - as I've been a long-time GI subscriber. I then spot this: "The Top Ten Games You've Never Heard Of," I browse, and at #4, I spot the game that we all love and/or hate, Runescape.

A small bit of the article:

A java-based MMORPG that operates on most internet browsers, Runescape is an extremely long-running and successful shareware game. Recently, the amount of live players on Runescape eclipsed the 185,000 mak - a number envied by many commercially released MMOs...

The article goes on about the subscription options, and has the website for the game. However, do you think this will bring a swarm of players to the Jagex owned game?

i think it will i noticed yesterday we had like 195000 people so yea i think that more people will at least try it out.

the funny thing is jagex not only has more peope online than some of the more major mmo's according to this article, the also spend no money on advertising, and a majority of their players come from word of mouth only :)

But i imagine that his will at least get some people to come try out the game. especially since its under the games you never heard of, that should spark some interest in people to come check it out. but after playing a high graphic based mmo it will be hard for ppl to come to runescape and appreciate the game play, since the graphics wont compare to their current mmo they may be playing.

RS name- Lunar3klipse, banned 3-16-06: found out theres a new appeal system, I get an extra appeal, fingers crossed.

BTW: Ill give someone a serious dollar, if I can use more than 30kb for a sig size :/ its my hosting for crying out-loud.

nah i dono the people would be reading like umm computer gaming world if they liked mmos

The fact that such a massive game is considered "never heard about' I find funny. I guess that within the gaming community not many people have heard about it. With any luck that'll change with this article. Just imagine how many people Runescape will have then

Just imagine if they came up with a massive update like the RS2 one where they made their graphics comparable to all the other "big name games". But that would probably take so much money that F2P would no longer exist...

Ah well. Runescape is still a great game, and whether or not the masses of the world see that isn't really something I'm concerned about.

heh i read that toom but in was in game inforcer not informer

No, Game Informer, Issue 156, pages 22-23 =)

Sorry to get off topic there, ahem.

Yes, I agree that it will influence the number of players, but how much, I don't really know. But yes, Game Informer has a slew of subscribers that have Internet Access, I assume, as they have content for online users. It may push Jagex to work on larger updates, but, as the article was released this month - It's too early to say.

this game has spread like wildfire

As one who's seen the whole thing, I'll vouch for that. Back when it was the first 100 players to now... Things have changed, and for the better :D

Well, mostly the better. And with more people brings more pressure to make RS even better.

Well if that isnt a sign of the apocalyse, I dont know what is!

Soon they're going to break the 200k mark  .

i just hope the batch of people that would maybe take the plunge into playing rs for the 1st time won't be like the huge flow of moronic little 8 year olds who came over from miniclip.com

Generally, from what I gather, people who Read Game Informer are usually older teenagers, young adults. Im hoping that any influx we recieve can help to counter the many people who are currently immature.

I think that it is pretty funny that Runescape rarely advertises, no tv commercials, no pop-ups on sites....yet they attract a large number of people to play. There are hundreds of thousands of different players, and usually over 100 000 people playing at any given time. Amazing.

I wonder if they'll do something (news article prehaps) when we reach 200k simultanious people?

I remember when they we're estatic about 85k people on at once! Those we're the early days of rs2 :)

I make a point to spread runescape among all the people I know as friends, mainly because I only make friends with people who would like it :P

Infact, I was surprised how many players there were at every away camp I went to (I met an old friend at one last summer who I'd been playing with since I was a newbie). It spreads by word of mouth, although miniclip really messed up the community. The fact that the players from there are so used to being able to use cheats and the like.... it really boosted the autoers problem in my opinion.

I receieved my monthly GameInformer magazine today and scrolling through i found a section on top 10 games you've never heard of. At first I figured they would all be stupid Japanese games that never seemed to hit it off in America, but then I reached number 4 and had a little chuckle. Check it out for youself :o

"extremely long-running SHAREWARE GAME???" These guys don't know what they're talking about...

Every path you have trod, through wilderness and through war, has led to this road...

I know that don't know what they are talking about, but i too wonder what is number one.

troope1.gif

I will shoot down any one with my bitting wit, and sarcasm!

What POSSIBLE reason would someone have to make a fake like that?Does he profit from faking a picture like that? Does it help him at all?Jesus Christ, stop being so suspicious. This is Tip.it for God's sake, not RuneHQ. -_-

i hope jagex wont take away f2p when rs become more populated.

i just hope the batch of people that would maybe take the plunge into playing rs for the 1st time won't be like the huge flow of moronic little 8 year olds who came over from miniclip.com

I don't know about you, but it seems that a lot of annoying players are disappearing.... slowly...

To be on topic: As long as they follow the rules and don't harrass me, they can be 10 years old. I don't care.

RuneScape is getting more popular...I see kids in the school library playing on the computers. You can hear kids talking about stuff throughout the halls. In my gym class today a group of guys were talking about how much gp they all have..
