moopymitchell182
I honestly don't see how people can't keep their grades up... all you have to do is do your homework. As soon as you get home, get out your books and spend an hour or 3 doing homework! After that, the rest of the night is yours.
Viv
i have never been that social so my social life is the same with rs or without. MY grades actually do better with RS because i can balance my time looking for a reward and helps me with goal setting in game. it helps me be social cause i am social in the game. This is good bcus it can help you learn skills and if you are addicted who cares. But I agree that if you are a basketball star and have tons of rl friends well then maybe not for you but then you are not the type to become addicted to games. i accually got this game when my straight A friend tells me that she does WoW when she finishes her HW so I decided why not me and looked for a free rpg i am f2p goal to be p2p in summer or something. the only reason that grades drop is when people get on play rs for 5+ hours go to sleep and do not do hw.  Ps sorry about the lenth
SAGE
See I see your point and though it is very valid it is not all Runescapers. In my personal experience I have known 3 people from my surrounding who have played Runescape, I am going to do a quick basis on these people.   One friend of mine played the game every 2nd day or so for an hour or so to kill some time. He had plenty of friends at school and was fit etc. He had no trouble just leaving the game after getting quite the level. He was no addict.   Then another person I know/knew was playing it once a day when started but for short times. Sadly these times increased and he would be on practically every afternoon from when he got home from school (3:00PM) till midnight as his mother once told me when she asked if there was some way I could convince him to quit. Now this kid lived 2 streets away from me and I never saw him anymore because he would just stay inside or all weekend stay up playing Runescape. Sometimes he would even skip school and his grades really did drop as he is now 2 classes below me after just 1 1/2 years of playing Runescape. He has truely lost many friends and is plain addicted. Now unlike my other friend this friend is a bit overweight and is picked on for it. I beleive this is what drives him to Runescape so much because nobody can call him fat. Nobody there to make jokes about his appearance. I beleive he can be himself without being ridiculed.   Now me, I play while I photoshop or talk to some friends or take a break from homework etc. Rainy days I might just come and play Runescape longer then usual and chat in IRC with my clan. RS does not affect my life outside the computer and never will. I could leave at any moment.   I beleive it is the way you are treated in the real world that can also affect the way you approach Runescape and not just playing Runescape will affect the way you approach real life. Factors are endless. People are different and have different circumstances which need to be acknowledged.    Sadly alot of youth today spend quite the amount of time on computers and it has been doing an impact on weight averages over the last few years and school grades which is quite sad. Runescape is not the problem, it's all internet activities people become addicted too whether it be Runescape or MSN or even something so simple as a forum and a drive to be popular online.   Yes, this is my opinion and I will stand by it. One thing I think we all have to agree on is the internet although can be good is always going to be a problem on certain people.   If anyone read this all thanks. Dharockslayer
The good thing about Rs is.... its a 2nd life... a 2nd chance... a 2nd set of friends. When you dislike the one, you move to the other and visa versa.... tyrcian
Often I have found myself what is the point really? After you've done it all theres only updates to do. But yes I think that managing RS time and RL time is very important because RS will probs be here for a lot longer than the moment you're living :)
arizark
bah runescape is a really bad game, i dont know what makes it so addicting. im in grade 10 now the single most important time of my life is now so i consider runescape i huge waste of time. if you really think about it this game is just a point-click adventure game. it requires no skill. atleast in games like counter strike you can build up your dexterity and hand eye co-ordination and it has a slight benefit to your life(and no im not saying wuit runescape and play counterstrike). i implore you people, instead of playing runescape in all your free time, get out and go do stuff with your real friends. runescape almost cost me my friends and now i regret playing it for 3 years of my life, runescape has just become a empty void in my life where i was sitting dormant for the whole time not realising my true potential. in closing, please dont let mmorpgs rule your teenage life just get outta your damn house :P      thats all from me, adios
Risen_The
Yet another "Don't play Runescape as often, it's addicting" thread.   Yes it's a decent change from most of the first posts of new members but just because some people have difficulty managing their time in Runescape and their own life does not mean everyone does. Think about it this way, if you were addicted to Runescape and your grades were falling and your friends didn't like you, etc., etc., would you be listening to the advice of these completely random strangers on a Fansite?   Humans move away from pain and towards pleasure. If Runescape is the only thing that provides pleasure for them then they will move more and more towards that, consequently it may push away other things that didn't provide as much pleasure, but happiness nonetheless. Now the person will no longer have any other outside factors of happiness and thus move further to Runescape. If you create a thread just like this one and the person reads it they won't care, they will disregard these things. It's called denial.   I say let those who are obsessed with Runescape and limit their social life just for Runescape stay the way they are. If they're "strong" enough to "break free" of their addiction then they'll be able to do it. If not, then it's called evolution. If someone can cognitively break away from Runescape then they've both won the battle and made themselves mentally stronger. If they cannot then they won't survive in the real world.   Your advice may be appreciated by some, but is unnecessary to most. Those of us who will listen are not "under control" of Runescape. Those who will not listen are "controlled" by Runescape and do not want to hear what is happening to them by playing the game.   It is my opinion that it takes a weak mind to become obsessed with this game, obsessed with anything in fact. Take control of your own mind and be conscious of what you do and what is happening around you, that's how you can survive the world. When you start to learn about yourself, that's when you can go out into the world full of confidence.   Edit: This man did a much better job. Oergg
Ive always seen runescape in terms ov voyeurism and lucanian thought; i mean how much more do you get a mirror than rs?   its an addiction like any other, it just depends on how much youre addicted; im one who believes that ANYTHING you find pleasure in is an addiction, its learning to control it that matters   rs doesnt INHERENTLY have anything addicting about it(besides psychological if youre going with my aforementioned psycholanyitcal reading), its ourselves who create the addiction; why? because contrary to your theory, there IS human interaction, and its on a bigger scale than MOST ov us have really experienced in our lives, you become part ov something where youre competing with people, but thats not enough, if youve been around as long as me you realize most people arent addicted to the game: theyre addicted to the people   you make friends with ACTUAL people, real life is underrated yes, but at the same time to people who havent really experienced the virtual world, theyre missing out on a movement ov connecting with people unlike any other in the history of humankind- theyre living with borders in their mind in a world with no borders   and thats the grand illusion, were really looking for ourselves, but we find it in others in the game;)

This
I have been playing Runescape for quite a while now. Am I addicted? No. I just like to retreat to a place inside of my room away from the world. I don't think that this is the real world, nor would I crumble if Runescape was gone. It's just another escape. Runescape actually, is part of my life. It makes me feel better when I play, like I actually have control of what's going on in my life. Many of those " no lifers " don't quit school and drop out to play Runescape. I've met many people that I've met in Runescape in real life, and I've built relationships with them. You think someone who is addicted to Runescape is going to take your advice? From a stranger? Most people that are addicted don't even know they are. Thisnotmain112 Combat'The' Clan
captianant
I think this thread was adressed to people who cant stop playing runescape (not to all the people who are flaming the writer saying "PMG!!!!one! im liek not addicted to RS!). I do support runescape fully though, like oerrg said so perfectly, runescape is almost another chance in life, a way to find yourself in life when you have nothing to lose. If you think about it, it would be a good thing for inmates in jail to have. They could become better people, learn how to be a functioning member of society, it would help them pass the time, instead of plotting to get back to whoever got them into jail, and it might teach them how it feels to be stolen from or have a crime committed against you (scammers, ect) Sodb ForumStop thinking. It's Runescape.

Zoidnerd
I do other things and just runescape if you really think about It, runescape shouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t be the only thing you play in life, its good on some aspects but others cant compare to other games, and this is more of a kids game, but I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t see how it can be because most kids don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have the time or will to collect millions of gold, only to use up again on stuff completely useless. If its your home then you need to find more use for your life, granted I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve played this game for a long time, but I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t rely on it for all my Multimedia experience, as some of you can attest to that, others however cant, and if it is in constant control of your life then you need to find another thing to do even if it is as simple as going and hanging with some friends, there is no way for you to need to be controlled by this game as you main source of entertainment. And if it effects you school grades then it becomes a major problem, games are here for fun SOMETIMES, not for your entire life, if you play this it gives you no REAL Communication with people, you communicate with words of letters and not of speech. And because you do not directly see the person you really cant get comfortable with a large crowd of people.  My Myspace

tefda
 It is my opinion that it takes a weak mind to become obsessed with this game, obsessed with anything in fact. Drugs, sleep, Work, etc. To list a few of the ones that I CAN list on this sort of site.   It is SO easy to become obsessed. Weak or not, you can become obsessed VERY quickly.   Thanks for the post, by the way.   Not at all. If we were "WIRED" to become obsessed with something we would not have creative thinkers as people would only have functional fixations (They cannot see things abstractly). Besides we don't work in such a way that everything is a result of one thing.   Our actions are guided by outside stimuli. Lets take an example from your "list". Drugs. It may begin with seeing your parents smoke, your friends smoke, you see it as a way to fit in. You begin to smoke and you like it because it can ease pain you are feeling, gain you friends, make you look "cool", or gets you "high". Eventually these results (calming, friends, cool, high) are not enough and you go deeper into the drugs or find something more powerful that will give you the desired result (normally viewed as taking more powerful drugs). That addiction is the result of these outside stimuli.   No one is obsessed with work. The reason why I go to work and the majority of the working class go to work is so that they can earn money and provide for a family or for themselves (in various ways). But what about those stodgy old men who have been working for years upon years at the same company and stay there for hours longer then need be? They are avoiding something. They are moving away from some pain (as we move away from pain and move towards pleasure, that's what humans are wired as). Perhaps their wife or kids are not what they want, the wifes nags him and his kids turned out all wrong (in his eyes of course). Many reasons why someone would be constantly going to work.   As I hope I've illustrated well enough here an obsession is not some natural thing caused in our life. If we were obsessed with one thing then we could not be free-thinkers as most of us are. Outside stimuli has an incredible affect upon us as it shapes and molds us into what we are and how we think. It takes a long time with positive and negative reinforcement to shape our behavior. It cannot happen over night, it needs to have some sort of foot in the door phenomenon action (get a small bit in and then keep getting in more and more over time).   Again, if you can identify that someone(or some group) is shaping your thoughts you can control what you do and what you think. Also I'd like to point out that an addiction (i.e. Drugs) and an obsession (as in having to wash your hands everytime you touch a doorknob) are two completely different things. One gratifies you and the other is an undeniable command that you give to yourself unwillingly (respectively). An addiction and an obsession are both controllable and I know people on both sides of that coin that have worked with their problems consciously and have succeeded over them.   It takes a strong mind to do this. Perhaps better put it takes a strong will to control your mind and body and making the correct decision (in regards to addictions).
