Runescape: Evolving or Expanding?

Members shure do get their money's worth with all the updates, but is Jagex just throwing a bunch of new stuff in our faces? Runescape has never essentially changed, or evolved; it's basically the same depth as it was when rs2 came out. The combat system, along with the other skills, are still very basic, and can be taken at face-value.

The updates are basically just tested by rs players for a few days, and many players go back to their normal routine (construction and the warrior's guild are two examples of major updates that never really went anywhere in terms of enjoyment).

We only get a few evolutionary updates, which include barrows sets with effects, and pest control for a new training style. But evolutionary updates are what really changes a game, instead of just making it bigger.

I see most of these updates as an attempt by Jagex to hold players in the game, and keep them playing runescape for a week or two more in the long run.

And in terms of comparison, you can look at the Pokemon series; the games never evolved, they just expanded them by adding the same type of 'gotta catch em all' Pokemon, which were essentially similar to the pokemon the game started out with.

I would really like to see runescape start to evolve, and see Jagex stop making updates that half the members wont even try out.

What do you guys want to see? evolution or expansion?

Edit:

evolving = the game becoming more in-depth

expanding = the game becoming larger

example of an effective evolution: fremnik helms and obby shields.

fremnik helms: they added depth by giving bonuses, but sometimes sacrificing defence. they are accessable (pricewise) to the greater member population

obby shields: added depth by giving a strength bonus in exchange for armor points. expensive, however still more accessable.

I agree with you. When the Warriors Guild came out I didn't really care. I just stopped by when I went to kill Trolls for Slayer.

They can't make updates that evolve the game every week. Hell, they cant really even do it once a month. Once every few months they release something that really evolves the game (barrows, slayer, etc.). I think thats plenty. If they released something that was totalyl game changing every month the game would be changing way too fast. It could throw alot of stuff off.

Also, the worrier's guild wasnt much but the defenders are incredibly useful, I use my rune one all the time. I think they could have added a few more aspects to the guild though such as some better shops or something but the current reward for it was very nice.

Evolving wouldnt be bad as long as it doesnt go at the same or faster pace then it is right now. I already have a wicked hard keeping up.

I think right now they're just exspanding. Have you seen the world map lately? IT'S HUGE! Thats just ground floors. Think of all the basements, upstairs, undergrounds, ect. ect. that arent shown. Thats alot of grid space being used.

I think they need to slowly work their way up the evolved list. Right now it's pretty basic. Many things havent been touched that probably should be looked into such as the combat system.

The main changes that have evolved the game so far including what you have said:

Treasure trails

Shades of morton though only slightly

Ancient magicks

The abyss for runecrafting

Mage training arena - bones to peaches although not that great it still changes a lot of guthan players.

Farming - growing herbs

I'm not really argueing any point btw.

Evolution? What would you like to see? Guns? Trains? There really isn't much to evolve into without changing the core gameplay completely. If houses aren't evolutionary I just don't see what you are trying to say.

Give some ideas so I can understand what you want from "evolution" in runescape. I think expanding the game is plenty. If you want the game to change, why not just play a different game?

The main changes that have evolved the game so far including what you have said:

Treasure trails - Can't argue this one

Shades of morton though only slightly - Not sure what you mean with this one

Ancient magicks - an expansion of magic

The abyss for runecrafting - an expansion to runecraft

Mage training arena - bones to peaches although not that great it still changes a lot of guthan players. - an expansion to magic

Farming - growing herbs - can't argue this one, but it falls right in with houses if it is considered evolutionary

I'm not really argueing any point btw.

i think the game has evolved a lot. the introduction of barrows effects, seerculls and ancient magicks has totally changed pvp tactics. these are much more sophisticated methods of battling. with miscellania you can leverage your cash to have your subjects gather materials for you. with pohs, not only are they unique to each player and a sign of wealth and skill, but they are also very functional.

no.. not that kind of evolution...

for example: everyone in the game has the same armor. it's not player-specific. jagex could make somethig like armor 'customization'. the customized armor could not be traded once customized.

I have to say the updates have been getting weaker and weaker. They release a new engine which seems to filter every non offensive word I say, they release a crappy skill which for the majority of runescape players just takes money out the economy (but quite a few people don't actually bother with the skill) and now they release a crappy warriors guild that apart from being able to get these tiny little daggers doesn't seem to do much really.

Construction isn't crappy and its very good for the economy. It act's almost like a new party hat in a way that can't be traded. Its a good idea by jagex to try to get rid of that portion of the market and get some of this money out of hte economy, I think its a great update.

Not really, what exactly is going to happen from a small amount of money in the economy getting drained? Nothing, because high alching brings it all back in.

I can't even see a problem with the economy, having very expensive items is a good goal for people

I just think its a cool skill, you can creat a really neat house and host private parties there if you wanted to. They're are plenty of activities you can do with friends there and if they would expand the room size (40 or 50+ rooms) you could make a really awesome dungeon for big parties and stuff items into your treasure chest room. I think it is a awesome update :)

Right now, only after a few weeks, there's already as many people ranked on construction highscores as there is in farming. I say give it a few more weeks and there'll be as many as in slayer and runecrafting.

It's an expensive skill so it isn't easy for everyone, but I think it's fun to the majority of players. You can't ever make statistics on what you've heard from people around you or what you've read on forums. You have to look at cold hard numbers, and numbers show that it's wrong to say that most people don't like construction.

If the addition of POH's isn't a great evolution in Runescape, I don't know what is.

Forgive me for my Nihilism but nearly every single person i've asked at the yew trees (and i've been cutting these for nearly 3 weeks straight now) have said that they see no point in POHs, they're a waste of money.

Personally, I don't have house parties, i've only been to one and for the most part, it sucked, and surely all these houses do is contribute to grind as nearly every thing that is any fun in houses costs millions

barrows effects - i mentioned

seerculls - expensive

ancient magics - expensive

poh - expensive

miscelinia - expensive

(expensive meaning: costly for the avg. player)

is it fair that only the rich should evolve? those are not evolutionary (or rather revolutionary) because only a certain, small group can take advantage. many other games have accessable depth for the poor.

You might want to reword everything. Like "Little Thrown in Changes" and "Extremely affecting changes". Evolution = Evolving Expanding = Growing, neither make sense to what your trying to say.

Well you probably asked the wrong people as the people I usually see chopping wood at seer village all are typically mediocre players that don't have tons of money. If you have money to spend it can be a very fun skill if you dont then i can understand why you wouldn't like it.

so evolving are updates that are going to be used alot, like barrows? because everyone uses that?

well we do get that alot, if you compare rs from beginning till now, youll see that people are wearing alot of different things now, also, things like graphic updtes always evolve the game in older areas.

But sure we do get expading updates more than evolving ones, but evolving ones arent that rare.

one thing is nearly every new update has a new item of some kind, yet our banksizes are relatively small. All these herbs, seeds, runes, random event clothes, holiday items, armours and weapons just can't seem to think in my bank anymore :(

i think every update expands rs but the only real evolution was the rsc->rs2 update...

cuz if you think about it...

barrows-expansion of combat

new skills-expansion of skills in general

new minigames-expansion of minigames

anything new-expansion of itself

now only from rsc->rs2 did runescape evolve

--same style combat system, yet different in many ways

--same style graphics yet fully 3d

--still an energy system but now instead with effect on the speed of your character

--same map, yet tweak slightly...

-------------------------------------------------

so with this logic, every new update is an expansion and every tweak to that update is evolution...

whats the point of keeping every aurmour, or item in general, in your bank? obviously you never use half the stuff there, whats the point of keeping all that? do you really need it?
