I stumbled across it this morning, and basically... it is a mother and her 14 year old daughter sueing Myspace because she was sexually assaulted and raped by a 19 year old male appearing to be in High School. Well, I don't agree with that at all. You're supposed to be 16 before signing up for a myspace anyway, and if you arn't, you're profile is not VIEWABLE by people you don't know. So 1, she lied about her age... 2.) Why add a 19 year old stranger, you've NEVER known or trusted before in your life, then allow this man to pick you up for school and take you out to dinner and a movie.. you're 14!!! While I feel horrible for her, it is indeed a terrible thing... They still shouldn't be sued... Thought's, opinions? I dont understand how this can still happen after all the warnings and advice given out to people. Sad. My.space should have some kind of age verification process, whereby you need a credit or debit card to enter into the system. It can still be free but it verifies your age. Its also worth noting that not all people on the internet are rapists and scum. I have met several people from Tip.It in real life and even stayed with one of them for a while so meetings can be safe and fun but you just have to be 100% trustworthy of the other person. Any doubts and its your own fault if something bad happens :cry: Edit: Its interesting to note that after reading this article on the BBC it has no mention of any charges against the man who did this which I find very odd as the media are normally very quick to name and shame in this scenario. Mercifull Posted June 21, 2006 Share Posted June 21, 2006 Ok the guy has been arrested because of this which is fair enough, some of the news sourced i read about this on didnt mention anyhting about the man so i had a niggling thought that it was a made up claim. However it turns out that indeed this man did assault this girl and I hope he gets whats coming to him in the courts but i do things its bad on the parents to sue over this issue and I would have hoped that they would put their time and resources into making sure that Pete Solis gets a fitting sentance rather than trying to milk cash. I mean really, meeting a stranger when you don't even know if theyre who they say they are they could be a 40 yres old man for all you know. The guy should obviously go to prision for assaulting her but they shouldn't get the money, your supposed to be over 16 I believe to use it... She had every right to be a member of the site. However, as Mercifull said, the gullibility/stupidity of young girls is astounding. Even after the whole, "People online may not be who they say they are" campaign. I watched a video clip recently of a young girl talking about her experience. She thought she was 'in love' so she met some guy. The thing that made me laugh (sick, I know) was when she said something like, "He was sat in his car. He looked older than he'd said. I got in". It's amazing. Getting back on topic, I think the parents don't actually care that their daughter has just been invaded; they just want a load of money. I try to guide her but she hangs around with bad company, has over 200 people on her MSN list, very few who she really knows and she is really, really, really gullable. I don' know how to help her and in her huge efforts to rebel against my parents, I think she is gonna hurt herself. Perhaps like this.
