Thieving - Immoral?

Ever since I started RuneScape, I've always thought the thieving skill was immoral.

Thieving is stealing. Stealing is wrong.

Yes, stealing, pickpocket, etc, might have been a big part of the middle ages, but do we really need a skill out of it? What does it teach younger players? Now, I'm not saying we should remove the skill, it's been in there since RSC and would have too much of an impact.

Perhaps we could at least rename it? "Stealth" for breaking ancient locks... for non-malicious tasks (Legends Quest, Desert Treasure). And maybe make it so when you get the random event watchman while theiving (which would then NOT give xp), you are blacked out with his mace, sent to jail, and must use stealth to pick the lock, and either sneak past or kill the watchman to get out. The above paragraph's probably a bad idea... but the main thing is... does anyone else think the same about Thieving in RuneScpae being immoral?

well killing people is wrong isnt it? but they're lvl 2 and just so fun to stab in the stomach or slice and dice right down the center isnt it. but i dont think a 11 year old kid is gunna run down his neighborhood with a samurai sword and start killing all in sight

also i dont think kids are gunna go into like wal mart and be like "my theiving lvl is 99 i can steel this trampoleen (sp?)

It's the middle ages. People got killed left and right.

Also, you should be jailed randomly for killing non-monster/quest characters.

u kinda just proved your point.

anyhow. take this as an example. In arodougne. the theiving capital. if u mess up. a guard comes and tries to kill u. wouldnt that make enough sense for a 5 year old's mind to think. "Ok. this is wrong. i shouldnt do this. or actually do it in real life" also, parents should teach their kids about this stuff. its not really video game's fault at all. i think blaming video games for violence is a scape goat for bad parenting

i played the first GTA with my friend all the time when we were like in 4th grade. but my parents obviously taught me well enough not to do that stuff in real life

lol :lol: I have better plan steel and teleport - you will never get caught.

If that will happend the problem isn't theiving... "Log out" is writing all over it.

But if I just stab them they die, so I don't get in trouble.

I've thought about it before, I guess that's why there's an age limit though.

In some of the quests for example you can betray someone or do something else that would make me think about the younger people playing and what it might be teaching.

:-k nah i think kids should learn themselves not to be influenced by games ;) my 10 year old nephew plays grand theft auto and ive never seen him runover a prostitute in a stolen police car so i doubt little kids playing rs will go pickpocketing

Well said, and I don't think anybody is about to get off the computer and think 'hmm, need bread and milk, I think go milk a random strangers cow and walk to the windmill to gound my wheat, or better yet, teleport to the deli!'

+1

EDIT: When the rest of my gym class was playing dodgeball, I stole all their walletes from the locker room and hid them in a trash can. (pulled out the trash bag, put the wallets in, then put the bag back in.)

It pays for my RS membership to this day. :)

My greatest ambition is to kill every member of the human race.

However I am a realist and therefore know that I probably wont be able to.

No one is going to replicate what they do on RS into real life.

If Thieving = Immoral

Then

Combat = More Immoral

WC/FM = Un-environmentally friendly

PKing = Murder

exactly what ^^^they^^ said.

but i have a question, do you think killing wild dogs, or killing someone isnt immoral? certainly you would have brought that up before stealing.

NO!! Why must people bring things like morality into a computer game? Morality has no place on runescape or any other computer game. Chenjs2 wrote the perfect response. If there was morality in runescape, it would be perhaps the most boring game since Tetris (Classic, but... very boring IMO \' ) If we went around sheltering ourselves from any little threat (such as thieving, and pking) we would be such a boring little mommy's boy civilization I'd cry.

Please just go on playing the game you have and don't worry about morality. If you actually feel influenced by thieving (In a game!) then you need to seek other help. You may not be influenced by it, but you would otherwise be over protective of everyone else.

I agree, even though my family is extremly strict about what games I play (belive it or not, my dad didn't like Runescape becaus of the 'child preditor' thing and I was almost not aloud to play Runescape, and my girlfriend isnt aloud to either because of her parents, and where both nearly 15) I wasn't aloud to play GTA when I was 10 and i'm still not aloud to :oops:

OK, on topic, I don't think that this game would convience someone it's alright to steal from someone, break into their house, or even kill someone with a blunt weapon and loot their corpse. :shame:

I don't see thieving as immoral...From the age of 13+ you should be able to tell right from wrong.I mean, you could say the same scenario for firemaking, we can randomly make a fire anywere we please, but do many people do that it our society? No :)

If you're going on about thieving being immoral, perhaps we should remove the ability to kill stuff too.

If you're gonna apply the rule to one section the game, it has to apply to it all.

So...

I think thieving is here to stay (although stealth sounds very cool @.@)

Rename it stealth pl0x!!

lets have a look what stats would stay if they brought morality :

bold = fine the way it is

bold + italic = some changes need making

normal = unnacceptable

attack - first to go.

strength - what else do you need it for but to kill people.

defense - protecting yourself, but if there was no attack or strength, then thered be no use for it.

ranged - is killing people with arrows allowed in society #-o

prayer - this would be allowed (protect items, which probably wouldnt be needed)

magic - ill let this slip by, although thered only be tele'ing

runecrafting - u can only certain runes (no minds, chaos, death, bloods

construction - no major problems

hitpoints - better keep it so u dont trip over and kill yourself by grazing your knee :)

bah im bored now, somebody else can continue the list :P

you can play rs under 13years though :^o

and there are lots of games that could teach a lot worst thing then a pixel guy stealing 3gp of a guard :-k so if in a game (eg GTA, we all know this game) you can shoot people doesnt mean every one is gana do that irl. there are some dumasses that do but they are retarted :|
