July 10, 200620 yr Author I play cornet (4 years, now stopped), but if you play trumpet youshould know it's practically the same thing. It's close, but I wouldn't quite call it practically the same thing. they have their own little nuances and special features or aspects that you need to mind to. You shouldnt quite play trumpet the same exact way you play cornet or flugelhorn. Trumpets and cornets have the same fingerings, and you hold it the same way. Trumpets are just heavier and have differnt spit valves and tuning valves which don't really make the playing different. And with Trumpets it's a tiny bit harder to play higher because of the extra length. Extra length? If the tubing was a different length, then they would not be in the same key, but most cornets and trumpets are in Bb. So if one's tubing is a different length than the other's, then they must not be a normal Bb cornet or trumpet. Maybe you have only seen a C trumpet, or maybe what you meant by short is that it might be a little more compact. But personally I wouldn't say that this really makes too much of a difference. Also as far as trumpets being heavier, I don't know about that. The cornet you has probably felt lighter because it is a little more compact. Like a herald trumpet might feel heavier because it is held way out there, but if it is a normal Bb herald trumpet, it is probably about the same weight or a little less than a normal trumpet because of its missing the valves. So would you consider the Flugel the same as a trumpet since it has the same fingering? Naw. Seriously take a look a this website. There is a lot of good information there. http://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/view ... t&start=40 If you would really like, go ahead and join. I am already a member there. It would be nice if you at least registered, popped into the lounge, and said hi so I could recognise you.

It would be nice if you at least registered, popped into the lounge, and said hi so I could recognise you. I don't know much about Flugels, So I can't respond to the last question. I've played for 4 years in school band and whenever a cornet would want to switch to a trumpet the director would only let them switch if they can hold the instrument up high throughout a concert (because of the weight, and the bell is further from your hands) and that you could easily play higher. I have 2 freinds that switched from cornets to trumpets, and if you've held both of them or weighed them you can tell the trumpet is heavier no matter how you hold them. The trumpet is a bigger instrument than a cornet, and anouther reason it is a tiny bit harder to play high notes on than a cornet might be because of the larger mouthpiece. OH god, I know Imust of made a thousand grammar mistakes which is unlike me. Edit: I decided not to play in the school band for high school so I don't play anymore, and I'm to lazy to register on those forums and I know I probably won't use them, tip.it has everything I need.

Just curious, but did you check that link out? It explains a lot of the differences between trumpets and cornets. And no i dont think the trumpet is bigger, it is mearly more spread out.
July 10, 200620 yr Yes I did and frankly, I agree with this post I saw there: How can one not be confused after reading this thread? There are to many conflicting opinions there IMO. I didn't even know that many types of cornets/trumpets existed, In my school band, mostly everyone has the same type of instrument from the same provider :?
July 10, 200620 yr Played the guitar for...god knows how long. I play the classical and electric. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

I didn't even know that many types of cornets/trumpets existed, In my school band, mostly everyone has the same type of instrument from the same provider :? Heh. Yes there were some conflicting opinions on some of the details, but I think we can agree there was a general concensus that cornets and trumpets are unique and different instruments. Yes, there are tons and tons of different brands, and within those brands, tons and tons of different kinds of trumpets. They are kinda like cars. Each trumpet or cornet has it's own specialities. There are thousands of different models. People can spend weeks looking for the trumpet and mouthpiece combination that fits them perfect if they are really dedicated, but then they might realize a few months later that it just isnt working so they will try a different brand, different bore size, different mouthpiece size (which has like 4 different variables. cup size rim size shank size material etc), different placement of tuning slide, different material. People don't realize that a trumpet is like a car. You really need to spend time test playing each one finding out what works for you.
July 11, 200620 yr I marched in the drumline for 5 years in high school and was section leader 1 year, but now that I'm out I rarely play drums anymore (I don't like drumset that much and UAH doesn't even have a football team, let alone a marching band!). I play electric guitar mostly now.
