mad4u689
From what I can tell, the terms "emo" and "goth" are being used as talking about members of a subculture - a subculture that often has little relation to the "emo" or "gothic" music. I know plenty of people who love Gothic Metal (i.e. Nightwish, Within Temptation) or emo (ehh... actually, I can't give examples, don't know this genre so well :D) that are perfectly well-adjusted. I think that society fails to create a proper distinction between the CHARACTER STEREOTYPE and the MUSIC GENRE in assigning these "words" (depending on your linguistic perspective ;)) to both meanings. Everybody hug and spread the love :D

zeekyhbomb
I hope you understand the whole 'emo' scene has died down quite a bit, and now people are more stereotyped on being 'emo' or not by their haircut. Most kids with that haircut don't cry and cut themselves, and many do not listen to what is considered 'emo' music. THis just really annoys me when you look at somebody, see their hair, with their bangs in their eye combed over a bit, and are like "Hey look at that emo". It ammys me all the more, as my brother has that stereotypical haircut, yet he hates Hawthorne Heights, he has never once hurt him self in any way, and he doesn't go in his room and cry. Ugh. :wall: By the way, lonellama, that was very immature, I bet people could find many things to make fun of you as well.
Kashi
There can be no intelligent discussion on this subject. Therefore, I wont even try. Notorious_Ice
Here's my intelligent opinion... GO POST THIS ON A FORUM OF PEOPLE WHO CARE!!!! Im sick of all these emo posts which just end up in flaming. Thats not intelligent, if you don't want to post your opinion then stay out of the topic. I dont need comments from people like you. I hope you understand the whole 'emo' scene has died down quite a bit, and now people are more stereotyped on being 'emo' or not by their haircut. Most kids with that haircut don't cry and cut themselves, and many do not listen to what is considered 'emo' music. Ugh. :wall: By the way, lonellama, that was very immature, I bet people could find many things to make fun of you as well. Well where i am, theres heaps of emos. My school has heaps and heaps of them. I can walk around a shopping centre (or mall) and see emos everywhere. People who dress that way, listen to the music, and tell everyone who cares and who doesnt care how bad their life is because they had an argument with their parents, or their little brother ate the last breadroll. They dont realise that everyone has their own problems, i fight with my parents, ive had a friend die, ive been told by friends they want to kill themselves. And i still dont find the urge to cut myself. They dont try in anything, because they have made themselves depressed. And they wont think happy, because they are convinced they are so hard done by. So "emo" phases can ruin peoples lives because they dont try in school, fail everything, and when they grow up a little the only job they are qualified for is a patty flipper. Don't be afraid your life will end, be afraid it will never begin.
WutangFlu
Goth = a Culture, a style, and a fashion... Emo = a Mindset that will fade in time. (i dont see 20 year old emos, do you?), and for god sake its becoming a fashion too... :notalk: by fashion, i mean its becoming acceptable, and attractive to people because they think its cool. i usually hate these stupid topics about people because all it is judgemental, and prejudice. YOU people need to learn to not care about how others treat themselves, or care about there lifestyles. have you ever heard a teacher say "worry about yourself" that is all you need to do, and should do... stop caring about it. like i said, this is just a fashion/lifestyle that will fade in time, just like hairbands, and disco. Tigra00
My opinion is this: Listen to whatever music you find "good". I listen to anything I find to be a "foot tapper", meaning I can listen to it without going "God, this is horrid.." basically. So I can listen to many types of rap, rock, metal, pop, whatever and still be myself. I've heard some "emo" bands and they have a few good songs, but most are just straight-up dumb. The same can be said for some bands in any genre, but they all have fans for some reason. However, when you listen to one type of music and start acting and dressing to fit the part, you become open season for people to make fun of you, because you are a trend-following idiot. I listen to all sorts of different music, and I wear plain white t-shirts and blue jeans. You can't stereotype me because I'm not a trend-following turd. If there was a trendy-band filled with people that dressed like me, I swear to god within a month Wal-Mart would sell out of their t-shirts and denim would be on short supply. Hey, at least the robots we have now (that all look the same...) have funky hair and clothes! That's special! \ The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!
deloriagod
My opinion on this is they're people just like us. They might dress differently but that's it. I'm not 'emo' but I love 'emo' music (in fact I currently have a My Chemical Romance background on my desktop). I have actually gotten to know a few of the 'goths'/'emos' at my school and they're pretty cool, and I have a lot of fun when I'm with them (not saying I don't have fun with my other friends). I think people everywhere need to stop stereotyping everyone. I don't even know what catagory I'd fall under since I get fairly good grades, love 'emo' music, I'm good at sports, play MMORPG's.. Well you get the point.. 'Emo'/'goth' is just a label put on people because of the way they dress, not how they act, what music they listen to, and they're not all depressed and don't think about suicide. Anesthesia
They're just people who want attention and the vast majority will grow out of it by the time they reach 20. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
Thief2668
Everyone takes problems their own ways, Notorious. Some 'emos' or 'goths', as you are stereotyping, are, in fact, just in it because they think it's 'cool', or 'fashionable'. Others are in it because they do feel the way they are saying, be it through music, actions, or even what they wear. Humans can express themselves in various ways. Yes, music may also affect the behaviour, but the reason they are 'emo' or 'goth' isn't just because of the music, for the ones that ARE truly depressed at least. Sure, I believe that because they shouldn't be doing some of the things they do (Harming themselves? What in the world? That's just immature.), but I can't really stop them. Who am I to stop them from doing what they feel like doing? Oh, and don't stereotype teenagers as they only once whop get into 'crazy fads', LP, trust me, alot of adults also immaturely say they are 'emo' just because they think it's 'cool'. Then again, why are people like this about 'emos' or 'goths'? Why don't people make these threads for every kind of music genre. I.E., rap. Now THAT's something that makes the youngsters act very diffrently. There's racism, crime, and all sorts of bad things there. But I only hear concerned parents talking about it. What about hip hop? Pop? I don't hear much people complaining about those. Why hate just that one? What if suddenly the 'emos' and 'goths' start making threads about Pop followers, and start stereotyping? Aah well... Please excuse my rambling... I have no intention in starting a sort of flame war here, neither am I n'emo' or 'goth', for you stereotypers out there... Edit: Oh, and, lonellama, that was immature, and unnecessary flame-bait. I suggest you make more mature comments in the future. Religious Text is not permitted. deloriagod
Thief, I think you may be looking at 'emos' and 'goths' with a stereotypical view. The majority of them are neither depressed nor do they cut themselves. People who cut themselves are people who are depressed, and anyone can be depressed. Like Anesthesia said, they're dressing and such like they do mostly for attention, not because they follow the stereotype. As far as people not making threads about the negetive effects of rap.. Well rap has become huge, and I think people don't want to see the bad parts of it. People have their own views on things and when they like something enough, they don't tend to see how it harms the community. I do, however, think that there should be a thread about the negetive effeects of rap on the community. I will say I do enjoy certain rap songs but they're not too bad (as far as lyrics go). Thief2668
I don't see where I said they ALL were depressed and cut themselves. I never said only 'emos' and 'goths' are depressed. You don't have to be depressed to cut youself. Insane isn't the same as depressed (not saying they all are insane, nor that they aren't depressed, and are insane). Not all of them dress in black. And if some of them do, what if they do it just because they like the colour on clothes? Or maybe they just don't want to have shirts that attract attention (Like ones that have text in them, sometimes funny, sometimes obcene). I agree with you on the music genres part though. The music is great, but the lyrics sure aren't good. Religious Text is not permitted.

blushenka
So, the way I see it, being emo is like being a rebel without a cause, right? You choose to be depressed, act depressed, etc. If you would *choose* to be one of those optimists that dress in pink, you would manage it just fine all the same. Meaning either choice you make is not based on the circumstances in your life, but on your own personal preferences (music, mostly, fashion, etc). Being depressed on the other hand, is a serious illness that you cannot choose to just snap out of and is far less 'romantic' than having long black hair in your eyes and lots of dark eyeliner. Not to be confused with each other. And gothic, like it has already been said, is a culture, a state of mind even, but it's more 'elevated' than emo. It's mostly concerned with the arts and esthetic. Some of the best literature and poetry of the world was gothic or influenced by gothic elements (Poe, Baudelaire, etc). People who are into gothic stuff are not necessarily depressed or make a point of looking 'fashionably depressed' but are more inclined to see the dark side of things. - "the cloud that took the form (When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view", like Poe writes in a cool poem. In a free world, they should be allowed to do that, without being pestered by optimists that they're not living life as they should. :P Myeah, most of you will probably look at this post like :-s Sorry ^_^ "Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict." Rizla
I think if people actually talked to all the people they label as emo, they'd realise that they're not all on the verge of killing themselves. Hell, i've got a friend who could be the definition of the emo look, but he's one of the happiest people i know and works as a care assitant for mentally and pysically disabled children.
