I guess many people would consider me emo, and I used to wear wristbands all the time but stopped now to get rid of those tan lines... alot of people stopped to ask me if I have cut marks under them -.- ussually I'd just insult/ignore them and move on.

I don't try to fit into any label,

I wear band tees (HIM mostly, If I'd find any other ones of good bands I'd wear them to) and element shirts

I used to skateboard alot

I'm in all honors this freshman year

I wear tight pants cause I find them comforting, and loose clothes don't feel normal on me

I play cornet

I wear goth-ish black converse

I listen to Elvis,70's, 80's, 90's and "emo"

So I guess I'm a Band geek-nerd-oldy-emo-goth-skater kid?

Most generalizations of emo weren't around few years back, cutting wrists used to be a "goth" thing only... and tight pants used to be only for skaters (still are, somewhat). And "emo" wasn't a word you'd use normally, now I hear it everyday.

Frankly most Goth/emo kids have far better personalities than preppy/jocky kids IMO. Most of them that I've met are pretty cool.

Heh, you're a lot like me.. You wear/do what you like best.. :) and from what I've noticed the emo/goth kids are a lot of fun to hang out with (I hung out with a bunch of them in my study hall)

theres something called "scene" or a "scenester" these are kids who are really into the music they listen to and it tends to be a certain genre like indie, a certain type of metal and what some consider a few emo groups but they don't go around cuting and crying like little [bleep]es, they may look like and emo but are usually pretty happy and energetic and goto ALOT of shows

at school i fit under the scene kids group

Wow, i'm suprised this disscusion is actually one, and not pure flame like they usually are.

well, I wear tight pants, I like them; I don't care. I mostly wear band shirts. I wear vans shoes, I find them extremely comfortable, same with the pants. I am NOT AT ALL depressed, in fact i'm extremely happy with my life. I do not cry, or hate my parents and keep to myself in a dark corner or anything like that. I don't listen to emo music and cut my wrists.

I listen to more hardcore music, hardly any screamo and no emo music at all. I also like rap, and tons of other kinds of music. I'm active in sports at school, I have good grades and all that.

As for emo kids that are all depressed and cut themselves, well, I don't think it's real. The majority of the emo people out there, aren't as depressed as they let on, they make themselves think they are. Not sure if it's to fit in or not but whatever. There is this girl at my school, that cuts. and these two other girls started hanging out with her. And the two other girls started to be all depressed and cut their wrists. So, I guess it's now a trend?

i kind of have a personal response to this.

If we were alowed to post irl pics, id get phl4m3d for being emo....

heres my response:

The goth emo thing IS just a phase people go through, but it can be taken to different extents. I wouldnt know where to begin on the gothic concept so ill just try to start soon on the emo concept. #-o

Ok, emo can be taken to one extent or another. I have a very diverse group of friends at the school i go to so i know alot about this. It can either be a style of clothing, an attitude, a sense of music, or a nasty combination of the three.

Example (myself for lack of better knowledge): Im a faily good student and athleticaly active, I have black hair(not natural) and it is straightened and styled, i dont wear the clothing as it gives me a bad first image with parents and possible job offers, i have my lip pierced as a way of expressing myself and being different(like i need it), and my music ranges from they might be giants to slipknot, cake to system of a down, Panic at the disco to Neil Young; everything you can throw.

These different fads, thats right i said fads, can be comparable to anything else out there its mostly for people to find their one sense of self image, some people look good in polos, others look good in a band t-shirt.

I guess thats just my opinion on the whole thing :-k i keep feeling like i forgot something though :-s

... I can learn about credit, banking, paying taxes, legal rights and mortgages at a skatepark?

I don't see what's so bad about P!@TD and FOB. You must admit they have good music. Who could possibly resist the livelyness of Dance, Dance or the beautiful cello in Build God Then We'll Talk. I'm listening to it right now.

I hate stereotyping people, just because my hair is in a very bad state and I go shopping looking tattered doesn't mean I'm poor now doesn't it? Perhaps I don't care about how I look. It's not like I'm "grunge" or anything. Same goes for the "emo" and "goth" thing. Just cus someone has long hair, band shirts and tight pants doesn't make him/her a low-life.

I so fully agree with u i love those songs and bands and guess what people IM NOT EMO :-k humm confused ur steriotypical minds yet.. people jude other people for listening to screamo wich i agree mostly the depressed kids listen to but just cause they do it dosent automaticaly make them the lunatic who cuts themselfs and even though the lyrics discuss anger and hate a lot of the music is metaphorically speaking and besides its never changed my personality its not a phase or just a mindframe im shure 10 years down the road ill still be rockin out to the same music it grows on you it shapes you and not as a angry teen psycopath but as a respectfull and accepting indavidual \' ::'

I'm actually going to agree with Carlo here and say sign with your name or send a pm. Don't do either, and it come across as you're unwilling to take responsibility for what you did - which is, IMO, an act of cowardness.

Nothing worse than a phantom moderator editing and deleting stuff just because they can.

Side note, LSF made one edit saying not to spam. Could've been her again or not. Since no one took responsibility for the deletes and last edit (in the above quote), the above post is just a general statement to all mods. It's not meant to be an attack at all, just an observation on the situation.

There is nothing wrong with listening to the likes of My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco.

I am going to be honest with you, I went through my 'dark' phase, if you can even call it that. I grew my hair a bit longer and that was about the extent of my ways. No one really noticed and after my skin got a bit greasy (lol) I decided to get a haircut.

Six months on I am being called emo! I don't mind the occasional joke from my friends, but when half of the year is generalising you because of the music you listen to, you get a bit worried.

Does this mean I like to cut myself and cry just because of the way I like to chill out (listening to music)?

Hell no!

I would never even consider causing self harm, for crying out loud I am one of the most cautious people you will ever meet!

I don't judge people in my school because they listen to people like 50 Cent or whoever, I don't immediately assume they want to grab their 'honeys' and go for a quick on in the back of a cab.

The way people are becoming more and more stereotypical is sad and worrying. It s like they don't even look at both sides of an argument anymore.

I'm against stereotyping people, for it's immature and often gives you false impressions of people. But you have to understand that BAD news gets publicity. And since most parents only listen to the news, they see a kid dressing weird and they think "hmm...their parents are probably abusive which is why they're so weird." Kids may think that too (I'm guilty of that, I'm afraid), but a lot of it is because they want to be different.

They want to stand out. Even in a "bad" way, which is discouraging to me. Still, there are many out there who DO cut themselves to feel in control of something (I have friends that do and some that stopped). So don't think that all kids are being judged falsely, for it is true for many kids.

About the comfortable clothing: I say do whatever you want, but be aware that stereotyping DOES occur, so you have to be held accountable to what you wear for stuff like that, even if it's not true. I may want to cuss really badly when something goes terribly wrong, but I have to restrain myself from doing what I want to in order to keep people from thinking things about me that aren't true and would hurt my witness.

That's all I'm saying. :)

I'm currently transitioning from a Wizard to a Mage and a Priest to an Archpriest. Lol both are nonexistant in the top 25. Hopefully I can change that. :D

Ok thanks for the replied, what "emo" actually is has been discussed, but what about negative or positive effects it can have. my opinion on negative is

Well where i am, theres heaps of emos. My school has heaps and heaps of them. I can walk around a shopping centre (or mall) and see emos everywhere. People who dress that way, listen to the music, and tell everyone who cares and who doesnt care how bad their life is because they had an argument with their parents, or their little brother ate the last breadroll.

They dont realise that everyone has their own problems, i fight with my parents, ive had a friend die, ive been told by friends they want to kill themselves. And i still dont find the urge to cut myself. They dont try in anything, because they have made themselves depressed. And they wont think happy, because they are convinced they are so hard done by. So "emo" phases can ruin peoples lives because they dont try in school, fail everything, and when they grow up a little the only job they are qualified for is a patty flipper.

Positive is that some people arent like that, and it might just help them express themselves because they like the music

Am I glad I'm past the point where people judge you on what you listen to or how you dress... I only found out what an emo was the other day for the record. Still don't understand it. Don't particularly want to know either.

Well, I don't think going through "emo" stages necessarily ruins people's lives. Going through such a stage can help a teenager who is struggling to become more independent (some might call it rebelling, but really, it is an important process that most teenagers go through). It may help them identify with a group and not feel so utterly alone, despite being not within mainstream culture.

For example, I went through an "emo" or "depressive" stage when I was in high school. It helped me feel like even though I wasn't part of the mainstream, I was interesting and unique. I'm not saying this is a good thing; but it DOES serve a function, and can be just a stage. Nowadays, I'm going to a great college to study math, and I promise you I won't be flipping burgers at a burger joint :)

Also, don't be so quick to stereotype. Not everyone who is depressed or who cuts themself CHOOSES to do so. Many have serious problems that can be helped with therapy or drugs. You don't have a "right" to get depressed if your life sucks - it's a chemical imbalance in your brain and it just happens.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Slightly off topic but I have no idea why Panic! At the Disco is even considered emo music... it has clever lyrics, not emo imo. And the melodies makes me feel quite cheerful.

And yeah, it's a good band.

"Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

Serious question. Why do people cut themselves on purpose? Doesn't that crap hurt?

Have you ever taken a really hot shower while you were stressed out, one so hot that it would hurt normally? It's relaxing, the pain relieves the stress. I've been told that cutting oneself is much like an extreme case of that. That doesn't make it any better, but it does explain why some people do it. The pain takes their minds off the stress.

I've never considered it that way before. In a strange way, it makes sense.

Thanks for opening my eyes a bit on that one :)

I think you did a great job explaining why most cutters cut. :)

In addition, some people feel very badly about themselves - so badly that they feel like they deserve pain. Cutting themselves and seeing the blood helps some people take out their self-anger privately.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

I know not all people that are depressed cut themselves.

Im not saying this goes for all people who cut themselves, but i know lots of people who cut, and then tell everyone. Actually iv never known of anyone who cuts and doesnt tell people. Anyone with half a brain will know that if someone cuts themself, and tells everyone, they are just seeking attention. Someone who is depressed still has a choice to hurt themself, or to relieve stress a differerent way they could do anything to make themselves feel better. They could call a friend, go out, just do something they enjoy.

If someone cuts, the reason they feel better, is because they have hurt themselves, and they know when they tell their friends the next they they will worry and tell them not to do it. It makes them feel better, because they are insecure and need to be reminded constantly that they are important to someone.

Most dont understand that they are not the person who has bad things happen to them. Its life, bad things happen all the time. Its the way that you deal with it that decides if you enjoy life or not. All these people that are depressed, can get over it without drugs, or their life just improving without them doing anything. The only way their life will ever improve, is if they WANT it to. And they actually start looking for the good things and not the bad.
