Man, you're too much of an elitest. I definetly don't listen to slipknot, or blink 182, but to assume a band's talent is immedietly cut off the moment they become to popular for one's taste is just flat out not fair. :o

 

 

 

Haha. The fact is, Joey Jordison, Travis Barker, and Lars Ulrich are three of the most over-rated drummers in the world. It's nothing to do with them being popular. If you can't see this, I have no interest in discussing it further.

Well it depends on what type of drumming you're looking for. Travis Barker is awesome at Snare drum, but I'm sure there are people that haven't been discovered that are equally as good as him at it.

First of all: I hate idiots who think they're good drummers because they can do a solo. It's just not right. A drum is in the first place always an instrument to indicate the beat and rhytm of the song, not an instrument to be played on solo. A band needs a drum, just as much as a drum needs a band.

 

Also, aside from being able to lead the band, I think a drummer needs to be the more or less silent, intelligent type of the band. The mysterious person hidden behind his machine.

 

That's why my favourite drummer is Dave Grohl in his Nirvana period. Not only was he a perfect example of how you have to lead the rhytm, he also used to be the prototype of the mysterious talented kid, exactely what appeals to me.

I'm really suprised no one has said Phil Collins. He may have been not the best drummer in terms of skills, but his ability to create rhythm and music is unquestionable.

There are plenty of over-rated bands who aren't mainstream

I suppose, but the ones we are talking about are extremely mainstream, and are supposedly "overrated" strictly because of it. I don't want to go in circles, because I know thats whats going to happen, I've made my point, enjoy. \

Max Roach, Art Blakey. Some jazz drummers. ;P

 

 

 

Ian Paice (Deep Purple) is really good. Neil Peart is pretty "dope" as well.

Vinnie Appice

 

 

 

And a bunch of others. Phil Taylor on Ace Of Spades (Motorhead) is pretty awesome as well, as a last thought.

Dave Lombardo is an awesome drummer. I can't believe no-one has mentioned him. I liked his work on testament in 'the gathering' record. Also I'm quite fond of the style that Tomas Haake plays the drums. They share the title of the best drummer imo.
