GRAFFITI-WHAT'S YOUR OPINON?

Graffiti is one of the most controversial forms of art out there. Some say it isnt art, some (and i) say it. Do you think graffiti is a waste and just trashes up a wall or is it beautiful? I want to hear your opinon! I am a graffiti artist, but strictly on paper not walls :shame:

In some cases it does trash up walls, especially the 5 second jobs that people do with just one color, it's ugly and it doesnt really help peoples views against graffiti artists.

I do really like the big pieces though, the ones that are very colorful and have nice lines to it.

Isn't it lovely how having an opinion makes you hated around here?

In Dallas, in the West End a tag artist has made quite a living.

In 5 minutes, he uses nothing but spraypaint and cardboard to make literal works of art. His tags go for up to $500 dollars.

If they are literal art, they should be cherished. If it's some idiot tagging his name, it's not cool.

Grafiiti can be an art form, if it looks good. But if its just a name or somethign that doesn't look good. Or sometimmes they just go on quests to get their name on somewhere and it doen't look good at all. And community service people have to make murals to cover them up.

There's two issues. One being whether or not graffiti is an art. To that, I say yes.

The other is the whole placement deal. Obviously it should only be done legally.

If you mean stylistically it's argued whether or not the spraying of letters is an art, I understand. But if you're just wondering if it's a waste because it trashes walls, those are two different issues, and don't really relate.

Whether it is an art or not is quite irrelevant if being done illegally.

I don't care if it's art at it's purest - it's not to be done on public property.

Writing it on paper and tagging it are completely different..

There was this kid at my school who made alot of graffiti on paper and then tried to tag a wall and it was total nasty.

Usually it looks absolutely moronic on public property, and as public property, it shouldn't be drawn on.

However, Murals are cool. These weird-letter, bright colored scribbles are not really art so much as an eye-sore.

Well yeah, they totally different in the way you apply them, spray too much it drips, spray too little, its too light. There are tons of ting like aerosol sticks, paint sticks, different styled tips, and a ton of other stuff.

I feel that graffiti is most definitely a very expressive form of art, even on public property. This of course, pertains only to the truly awesome works that some of the greats of the graffiti world do.

In response to Seahawk, that is completely appalling, and while I believe graffiti to be an art form, I still despise worthless kids with no respect for history or the past. Tagging on new buildings, if it is done correctly, should not be considered such an awful thing, since many of the good artists make very interesting and visually pleasing works. I would see it as simply adding character. But tagging on a building such as that is completely unforgivable. I do hope the little wretches get what's coming to them. :D

Itr eally depends on where it is, if it is ust scribbled on a buisiness property, then its just not right. But if it is a beautiful piece with actualy thought and work put into i'm all up for it. A wall is like a blank canvas.

If it looks good I wish it was done more often. If somebody just sprays their name..they're an idiot.

Just to be different.

Think about it. A freaking Dragon Cane with a Dragonstone gem.

Depends on the graffiti, if someone is spelling out naughty words or simply their name it's annoying and vandalism. If it's well thought out and supposed to be art then it is, and often brights up a normally dull wall or building. It's human expression, and as long as it's clean it should be cherished, not surpressed.
