Centuramage Posted September 25, 2006 Share Posted September 25, 2006 This morning I hosted a bit of a trivia game among some tip.iters with the intention of being nice and giving away a few items. What ensued was rather disgusting. Lots of whining...subtle teasing...attitudes toward me changed...in general, however, what struck me the most was the greed. The items weren't even that special...a net worth of maybe 1 mil gp tops over 4-5 giveaways. However, the participants still felt the need to...well, frankly, become rather ugly with respect to the game. The attitudes and bickering that came about weren't necessarily all that bad...but seemed unnecessary with regards to a few pixels being handed out for free. It was like the participants (who ranged in age from teenage to "mature" adulthood) had reverted back to toddler like greed for a bit. T'was rather disheartening for someone who really only wanted to have a bit of fun with some prizes. What is it about runescapers, and perhaps people in general, that creates an insaitiable need to accumulate crap at all costs? I mean, in this instance, it was just pixels I was giving out...and that resulted in changes of character that I didn't find very becoming at all. Put yourself in their shoes. I'm giving something away in Runescape, and I pose a trivia question to you and a group of people, are you going to succumb to the covetous nature and change your behavior as a result? Or will you understand it for what it is...merely a kind gesture in an attempt to have a bit of fun? I told the group of people that exhibited this behavior that their actions made me somewhat disillusioned with the quality of character of people in general, and I mean it. Unfortunately, I thought this group to be somewhat above the maturity level of the average group of runescapers, so I'm afraid that to me, it reflects poorly on the collective. Tell me, what's the respect of your fellow Runescaper worth to you? Would you make a fool of yourself for a bronze med? a piece of barrows equipment? a blue party hat? Or would you realize that these pixels are absolutely meaningless and try to hold on to something much more valuable, in my opinion: your character? I remember when I had my 99 cooking party I dropped a few items, inventory worth perhaps 300k. I just remember one of my "friends" complaining about only getting 1k fire runes from the drop. I mean, wasn't the idea to be celebrating an achievement, not getting free stuff. Greed is after all the base behind all scammers and macroers, and there's rather a lot of them. People who want lots for nothing. I'd rather earn what I get, theres much more of an achievement in that, and more fun to be had. I have also in the past hosted a few quizzes/races/whatever I can think of, when I'm bored (when I was F2P) and you see that people are there to get the prize money, not really just to have fun. 89/99 farming Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Adamskii Posted September 25, 2006 Share Posted September 25, 2006 Sadly, whenever someone holds a drop party, whether this be after a level or not, people seem to revert to some kind of primative state. The characters only need seems to be obtain items at all costs, then (regardless of whether or not they obtain items) moan about what they did or didn't get. I myself personally like the 'drop' systems of one of my friends. His system involves having an inventory of items, inviting a group of friends and then ask them in order to call out a number, (which relates to an invent slot) then everyone who attends gets something and you can ensure that random people, who have no prior knowledge of you or your achivements get nothing. Now having that been said, I am a very competative person, and if i goto a drop party, i always get angry when i don't get anything, but not at the dropper, just at myself, because i wasted my time and i was too slow to get anything. It's like just because they are on an online game nothing matters as you can be as barbaric as you wish or as annoying which many of the runescape players seem to adopt. Reason why I never host drop parties (pther than the fact im to poor :P ) is people can never appreciate what they have instead they want more, more, more... Make sure that they are good honest players that could really appreciate a gift. Also beware of people who have side accounts such as pures. Just keep a look-out for the polite players! There were some real life issues with it. Yes, many people show greed in Runescape. I think it's because no one will probably see them in real life, so they feel like they can act however they want. People also want to be ahead of others in this game, and feel that if you don't give them free stuff, that you waste their time, and so they complain and call you names. I used to host rune drop parties in rs1(when those parties were ownage). Now, in RS2, I stopped, because its too easy to gain money. In rs1, it was hard to gain money, and people went to parties for the heck of it. Although these items hold no "real" value, they do take time and effort to aquire, just like "real" money does. Whether you care to admit it or not, we all are attached to our characters and their items, mainly because they become a part of out lives (think how much time you spend a week trying to Level/Merchant/Whatever, then tell me that your Runescape Account means nothing to you, if they were "just pixels" we wouldn't play this game as much as we do, in order to become better) However, I go agree with you on a wider level, as this sort of thing happens in RL too, people in general just need to be grateful for whatever they do get given... No announcements, no trades, nothing to draw attention to myself. I've found this to be the most satisfying method as no one gets disappointed with the drop, since there were no expectations going in, and I don't hear any begging, complaining or what-have-you from anyone since no one knows it was me. Like you, i find it a bit um, disappointing, as i would be expecting a little more from people. Yeah, i wouldn't act immaturly like a preschooler. Even though i'm only 13 i know hot to stay sane.
