I highly doubt that; a lot of people don't know Latin. Not just on this thread, mind you.

Isn't Latin an unspeaken language these days? That's what my grandpa always said.. But a lot of words are derived from Latin words. Odd :-k

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

latin is a dead language, no nation or soceity of specific people speak it, that is why it is used it medical/scientific type aspects. basically in 100 years i tiger in latin will mean tiger, and in 1000 years it will still mean tiger. we have so much slang in our languages today, that maybe what we call this or that today, maybe a president? or a plane or a fish in a thousand years.

if your a basic america teen and have no college eduction im not surprised you know, none or little latin. latin really isnt used much in america as far as i know.

Ahh! That's right! I hate all those long named scientific things.

I am pretty sure the cat in the witches house that is in the underground pass speaks in latin if you have a cat speak amulet. I can't check for myself cause i am currently f2p and the last time i was there was long ago so it could of been changed or I am just thinking about something i thaught i saw but really didnt

the first most popular english book ever to be writen which encourage many people to learn the english languge was called "canterbery" also the name of a town (if this book wasn't writen the english languge probaly would have died out)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This depends on whether you consider Old English to be English or not. The "Canterbery" you speak of is actually "The Canterbury Tales," written in 1386 by Geoffrey Chaucer. It was written in Middle English, a predecessor to the English we use today; the difference was that it was influenced more by the Saxon language and Latin and less by others (such as German). If Old English is considered to be English as well, then "Beowulf" is actually the first work of literature to be written in English. And English did not "almost die out." It developed over hundreds of years and was formed from a combination of the old Anglo-Saxon language and the Norse-French spoken by the Normans when they invaded England under William the Conqueror. Ive been taking latin since the 7th grade (im in 11th fyi) and i have seen latin all over runescape (and most mmorpgs infact).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The most recent thing I some what remember is from the quest, My Arm's Big Adventure. At the very end he says "something domus (but i belive they used the accusative case, domum). In english it was something like home sweet home (bad translation..) but yeah i cant remember what exactly he said. ANYWAYS Domus means house or home in latin, and in fact your character goes what was that? and my arm goes its some very old language... see my arm is edumicated (or sumthing like that)

i seriously wish i was fluent in every language in the world, latin is the 1 universal laguage and its pretty basic honestly, ive noticed latin translations usually resemble what it refers to in english or closely to it.

Actually England was conquered by the Romans (native Latin speakers) all the way up to Scotland. So England definately has had a Latin influence.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Most European languages, except German and eastern European languages, have strong Latin roots. If you for instance know a bit of Spanish, you'll know some Latin words aswell.

Yep Miscellania can be directly traced to the latin word 'Miscellanea' meaning sundries/odds and ends, indeed the same word is still in use today. There is also Miscellany meaning the same thing but with the more modern spelling - both are included in the English dictionary.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Both are derivatives of the latin word 'Miscellus' meaning mixed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Huge amounts of the English language are based upon Latin, using 'Canis' as another example, the modern day word 'Canine' is derived from it's Latin source. Not to forget, that Latin was the universal language of science for about a millenium. It was widely used during the Middle Ages by people of science all over Europe. University lectures were given in Latin, scientific papers were written in Latin, letters/communication were written in Latin. It's a dead language for sure, nobody speaks it anymore as is. It provides me with insight in English though, e.g. (which is Latin btw for exempli gratia :P ) when confronted with a word that I don't know, I sometimes recognise the Latin root in it.

Alot of things in runescape are from Real life such as Terror Birds (They are an actual Type of bird) and they also Quote alot From Games, Movies Etc. But once you think about it they kind of have to cause its hard to come up with 1,000,000 Names and all sorts of things for every little item in runescape.

im in the top 5 in my school at latin and im only in year nine, and its secondary school. lupus is a wolf so there may be some connection to something there. and im not sure if canfis means dog...

this isnt latin but it has to do with jagex using things in the game, a while ago i remember someone had a screenshot where they were talking to a j-mod and they said they got the name "Lumbridge" from Cambridge

Jagex takes alot from other languages, as do many games, novels, films etc. After all if Canafis was called "dogton", it'd just sound stupid. Weiss (or originally weiÃÆÃâÃâ¦Ã¸) is white in German, as in Trollweiss, and Trollheim means troll home.

 

latin is what people call a dead language, its called this cause like with english, english gets slang words like pal, sup, and so on, but with latin no slang words or any words are changed in oral or on written work, so basically if a scientist discovers a new cell o something, he'll name it in latin and it'll be translated from latin to french,spanish,italian,english,and nay other language. English is made up from alot of languages and continues to be made up from various and sometimes more languages.

pegion thast a language lol? never heard of it, i think you mixed up something here and any language is developt that way first u have so to say "the stem" of the language the main words and then when the language is develeped enough it absorbes words form other languages as far as i know one of the poorest languages is turckish since they dont have many words of their own and all the new aren't absorbed fast enough to full fill the breach thats made

English is based on latin. It's no surprise you found latin or latin roots in a english game.

yar, there is a lot of Latin in this game if you just look for it. I am also a latin student (at our school for latin 1-3 we use the "Ecce Romani" series (look, the romans) i can't remember who it was who posted the line about marcus and cornelia, but those two are both in this book too lol. i'm in Latin 2 (which is really easy) we are currently working on the passive (for example: in tertio tabulato huius insulae est mater [bleep] duobus liberis. Hi miseri flammis paene opprimuntur)

I like latin? Amo if it is used in first person sigular. If not what the heck are you saying :lol: .. amamus latina? we like latin. because it owns

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

deadmeet, i have also been using the same bookm, we are only on chapter 17, but we learn stuff outside like culture and stuff like that.. but for start of 3rd year 17 chapters is bad.....

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And to the person that said they speak latin in vatican city, i think they rarely speak it, Latin was not really a spoken laguage because it was the language of the educated.. which means they had to be which means..... very few people knew it, too few to communicate :)

Maybe I'm oblivious, maybe it's because I don't play as much or that I don't do quests, but I'm in AP Latin Virgil (IV) and I don't notice too much Latin.

But one thing you should know is 60% of english comes from latin, so yes very easy to find a derivative.

Still spanish and italian both are about 75% derived by latin, which makes it really easy for us to learn it =). Most of the latin words will sound as/like a (atleast) spanish word, so I only needed to learn the endings for the words

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And I do believe there's still too much latin for it being a "dead language". For example our school motto is Alere Flammam Veritatis, and I think the rest of the important schools have one of those....

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I see it a lot in Mexico, maybe that's just me... or because the latin influence over spanish is too great, but there's still a lot of latin phrases laying around

and about Latin being a dead language...that's wrong. Etruscan is a dead language (there is not a single known person in the entire world who can speak Etruscan. Scholars are pretty sure there is an etruscan language guide written by either Caligua or the emporor who followed him, but we have never found a copy of this, so noone can read any of the Etruscan writing (for those who don't know, Etruscans were the dominant Italian culture before the Romans, and even ruled the city of Rome for a while) while Latin is "frozen". It's frozen because as people said before, no real changes are made to it because no one really speaks latin. Latin is basically all writing and whatnot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But people should really look around a bit, they would be suprised how many things come from latin (easy example...i believe everyone here knows what pork is lol, well the latin word for pig is porcus...sound familiar? :P)
