Stumped Teacher.

We were learning about DNA today during science. My teacher was talking about how the proteins Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, and Cytosine can only pair up as AT and GC. So, of course, I had a question. He called on me and I asked "What would happen if the same protien, like T&T were paired up?"

He just stared at me, and stood there, as his lip shook like he was about to cry. He didn't say something for the longest time, then finally said ,"I don't know." It gives you a warm feeling to see a teacher stumped. I chuckled a little bit (Not enough for him to hear me.) I was wondering if any of you would try it, and see if your teacher can come up with an answer.

At least he had the balls to admit he didn't know. Most teachers I knew in high school would make something up or say "that's too complex for your level".

Your teacher didn't know because there is no answer to the question except for "no". It doesn't happen, and if it does, its a freak of nature, and dies. Its one of those things that just happen in nature and there is no explaining it yet atleast.

Therefore he was just working with what he knew and what science knows.

(sience knows more though :P)

Edit: actually i was only thinking of what i learned at the beginning of the year. I forgot what we learned in the genetics unit. If such thing were to happen, its just a genetic defect.

The problem is is that sometimes it actually is too complex for the students level and it would be useless to even explain it to them.

ok, so... he still knows a lot more about DNA than you do. your point?

nothing great about stumping a teacher... notice how its only the smartasses that think they're great by stumping a teacher? oh, yay, you should feel good for yourself, 'cuz you just looked like a complete [wagon] to the whole class, and now the teacher hates you. yea, totally worth it.

Maybe too complex for the classes general level, but maybe not the student which asked the question.

Do you know why Thymines don't pair together?
Because they are both guys!
Actually, it's because the Thymine molecule's design only allows it to form hydrogen bridges (I don't know if that's the correct term for it, I translated it directly from the Dutch 'waterstofbruggen') with Adenine molecules. These hydrogen bridges are what keep the two strands of DNA attached to each other, so if they can't be formed then the strands won't be bound together.

If the teacher really hates his/her student for asking a question, he should be fired. You may be a big fan of sheepism though, i.e. shutting up and listening to everything without questioning it. That's not education, that's brainwashing. You're supposed to ask stuff like this.

*glances at biology notebook* Nobody in my class ever asked that. I guess we all just figured AT and GC pair up, nothing else. I guess it is good that your teacher admitted that he didn't know. I have to admit, I enjoyed the genetics unit in my class. I learned some things I enjoy knowing, rather than most of the crap I'm forced to learn every day.

And then in the process you confuse the rest of the class thus straying from the topic and slowing down the class in general. The teacher should say that if you really want to know you can stay after class/school and I'll teach you about it

#1. I was just asking a question. I didn't do it on purpose. I was looking for an answer.

#2. Why would he hate me for asking a question?

#3. He wouldn't hate me. I am an A+ student. So next time, don't open your mouth. You'll just look like a fool.

Thanks BlueLancer.

I could've stuck with a simple "The DNA wouldn't work." I've asked like "What if the Y chromosome had the same amount of genetic material the X chromosome did, therefore, forming with a Y chromosome?" I got a "It wouldn't happen." I was alright with that one. I think...

Anyways, I know he knows more than me. I know he didn't know. It's alright he didn't know. I realised today that teachers really don't know everything that is to be learned in their field.

So, yeah...

I would've stayed after school :D I like learning about stuff like that. Plus, it probably would've answered my question. We watch movies every class, and we watch the same movie x3 in one week (Basicaly every class period for the week). This is basically... the second week we've watched this movie. But anyways, staying after school is fine. As long as I can find a ride home.

Ha, that's worth a laugh. A+ students vary so much it's not even funny. I know A+ students who go out and get hammered at least every other weekend and others who rarely go out and are the WoW maniancs that we've become acustomed to

You act like I delibretaly went out to get my teacher. I chuckled, not laughed. Laughing would have to be out loud. Chuckling is where you do it silently, so you don't make your self look like a ... and so you don't make your teacher look stupid, in the classes eyes, for not knowing an answer. A+ students can be smart ......, what I'm trying to say is I'm not that type of person. I do my homework, help out at home, eat, and go to bed.

I try my best in school, and I work. I'm the only good kid in my family, while my other one's drink and do drugs. Taking care of my mom because my stupid of an ex-step father left her in debt because he didn't want to pay. Stalking her every move. What I'm trying to tell you that it was out of my character to laugh, and I am sorry about that, but you don't have to be such an ... about all the other stuff about my teacher 'hating me', and me looking like a fool to my class. No question is ever a 'dumb/wrong' question, and asking one like that makes me look like an ... to the class/to the teacher.

My 2 cents.

so if i did not point him out and instead praised him for his rather immature deed, we would be cool, right?

i'm not tryin to make myself feel good (because, you know, proving people wrong on the internet is SOOO cool). Instead, i pointed him out to, well, point out the fact that he was the one who acted and looked like a fool by, heh, pointing out the teacher and chuckling about it. If i looked like an [wagon] as a result, then so be it, i don't care, and don't mind.

If by now you guys don't realize that feeling smart and warm just by pointing out a teacher is, well, pretty arrogant, then I dont know would make you do so.
