My first official thread here in the Gallery board so please, don't bite! :ohnoes: Well I haven't done much digital art lately so I figured I'd get back into it. This image is of a girl and her dog heading back to her small, remote cabin in Alaska for Christmas :) (figured I'd add in that last bit, since Christmas is about a week away! :P) Comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. I mainly began by working on the sky and mountains in the background. They're still incomplete, but I'll go back to them later. I drew a very basic outline for what I hope to work on next - the cabin, the girl and her dog - and Alaskan Malamute.

2. Finished off the log cabin. I'll admit, I got a bit frustrated with hit. The only part I'm exceptionally happy with is the smoke from the chimney, I think it turned out fairly nice. I kind of tried to make it look like light was emerging from the windows, but it didn't turn out too well. And I'm beginning to realize how massive the door looks :shock: I will eventually add snow to the roof and areas around the house (to make it 'fit' better with its surroundings)

3. Well, I made a couple changes/additions to the cabin. I made it "in the snow" a little more and put some snow on the roof as well. I also followed some advice and made the person on the bottom level of the house actually be able to fit through the door :shock: So I moved the bottom two windows down and to fill up some space at the top, which was looking empty, I added another window and two more people (will probably fix the left person later, she looks weird..). More noticeably, I coloured the main girl in the image and her dog (will add doggy foot prints in a bit!).

4. Well first I followed some advice and made the snow more defined where it meets the mountains. I also added a snowman next to the house, as suggested also. I decided that I wanted something to 'fill out' the area a bit more so I added a tree, but I'm not very pleased with how it turned out, I might just redo it. Suggestions on this would be much appreciated. I also added some light snow falling (50% opacity) and some more define snow being blown by the wind (100% opacity). I added some noise texture to the snow and lightened up some of the shadow. But I'm still not entirely pleased with it. I'm beginning to realize how annoying snow is to draw. I'm also having thoughts about adding a moose or something silhouetted in the background. The right side is looking empty.

5. I got rid of the awkward branch on the tree, as several people suggested. And followed some other advice with the shadows. I made them blue instead of grey and made them much cleaner looking. I also added a little moosey on the right side of the background :wink: I put the moose layer on Linear Burn to let the noise effect of the snow go through him. I think I like it like that. I was going to add snow on top of the moose's back, but it just blended in with the background snow too much. So instead it looked like there were large parts of his back just missing :shock:

Thanks you guys :D:D I started working on the log cabin. I have all the basic stuff done (colouring, shading), just have to add the details like the chimney, windows, doors, lights, etc. I'll post a picture later, I'm supposed to be cleaning my room! :ohnoes:

nice job so far but isn't the door a bit small? The person on the inside (assuming they're standing up) would be half a foot or so taller than the door,

Thanks for the advice TheDark! I moved the bottom two windows down a bit (because I didn't feel like redoing the entire door, since it's on the same layer as the rest of the cabin :? ) and added another window above those two.

i just think the persons legs are abit wierd as wouldn't the dog sink in abit too? Looks like a pair of corks painted black for legs so possibly extend them a margin past the knee?

The lighting is excelent. The light source is clear, and the effects from it are good.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But the door looks a little small (even though it's buried in snow, so is the character...)

 

 

 

Also the perspective seems a little off, the shadow seems flat, so it looks like there is a slope there where you've added the shadow. Or in other words, the house looks like it's floating.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Maybe try making the shadow a lighter gray.

Looking very nice so far. It's only a minor detail, but personally I think a slightly warmer glow coming from the cabin's windows would make it look even cosier and wintery. Othewise, great work and can't wait to see the finished thing. :)

Nice work, it looks great apart from the snow. Just a few things:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-There needs to be a visible texture or some snow drifts to break it up, the house looks like it's levitating kinda, the shadow is weird.

 

 

 

- You might wanna make a more defining horizon where the mountains meet the snow.

 

 

 

-The person looks good, but the dog's face looks strange, a perspective problem i think.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I like the silhouttes though, and the tree, but the proportions of the door looks weird. Looking forward to updates :)

Well.. A digital painting can be made on a variety of programs, most commonly Photoshop (I use CS2) or Corel Painter. It's basically where you use the brush tool instead of the pencil tool, like in pixel drawings :wink:

Photoshop is amazing once you get the hang of it :) You can basically do anything you want - simple animation, pixel art, digital painting, edit digital photos.. Anything, you name it :D
