Alternative armors and the GER. [criticism, please!]

I. Introduction.

a. Basic Introduction.

Armor is an integral part of Runescape. This is obvious. Our use of armor, however, is not nearly as intuitive. Based on my understanding of the combat system and my combat values, I see many mistakes regarding armor use. Thus I have written this guide intending to dispel these armor myths.

b. Runescape Combat System.

i. Attack: Attack helps a person hit more often and through higher defense values.

ii. Defense: Defense prevents an opponent from hitting often (it does not reduce your opponent̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s maximum hit, however).

iii. Strength: Higher strength values let you hit higher. Magic and Range do not have Strength values; the maximum damage is determined by your ammunition.

c. Performance v. Training Gear.

i. Performance: Performance gear is highly effective armor, used for fighting high-leveled monsters, PvP, or otherwise epic battles. Performance gear demands different things from your armor.

ii. Training: Training is for everyday use, for leveling. Yet again, you look for different bonuses in your armor while training.

d. The Roles in Performance

i. Attack: Attack is very important in performance gear. While fighting demanding battles, your opponent often has high defense. Attack values in gross excess of 100 melee/125 range should not be a surprise, especially when going against level 300+s.

ii. Defense: Defense is second to attack in performance gear. While in some cases where your opponent has obscenely high attack (Jad), rendering high defense essentially useless, blocking otherwise lethal attacks is definitely a plus.

iii. Strength: Strength is not nearly as important as defense or attack in performance battles. While the ability to deal damage is good, often the issue is hitting at all.

e. The Roles in Training

i. Attack: You should typically be training melee against level 30-80 NPCs. Any attack values over 100 melee/125 range/50 magic should allow you to hit 90% of the time, making additional attack useless.

ii. Defense: Defense is usually important for high efficiency. Efficiency can be drastically reduced if you must use lots of food and therefore restock. Therefore it makes sense to use melee armors while training magic and range.

iii. Strength: Strength is usually key in training. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s what makes 60K an hour possible in P2P, while 30K an hour in F2P. For range/mage, I usually use expensive ammo, even when the increased efficiency is not proportional to the extra cost.

Very confusing..you have too add some pictures.

Also when talking about PVP armour talk about the defender, zammy book ect. You missed out many good items that re more commonly used.

I AM SURELY GOING TO WIN THE AWARD OF THE MOST LOVED TIP.IT'ER EVER, SURELY?

Because they are commonly used. If you're more insightful you'd realize the main point of this guide is for alternatives to the more popularly used items.

I don't know why people are complaining. But I found it easy to read.

I only wonder how can this be usefull. Can you give some examples where you can use this guide? (Besides barrows, I figured that one out myself.)

Bold titles and space out each item, otherwise good.

Nice guide. Did Jagex change the regular rock cakes to act like the rock cake from RFD? I thought the Gu'Tanoth rock cakes were one use, but my friend told me recently that you can only obtain one of them at a time.

Great guide, and very clear. I'm a little bewildered by the people who think it's confusing, when its aim is obvious.

I do have one criticism though. Your discussion of range gear misses out two important factors: safe spots and mage defence. If you're training using a safe spot (which most people do, in fact I can't think of anyone who will just stand in front of a monster and fire arrows into it), melee defence is irrelevant, and you should ideally have the highest range bonus you can. Food isn't a factor if you're not going to get hit. A similar point could be made for your discussion of mage training using combat spells.

For performance, in many cases (e.g. Ahrim, the Sea Troll Queen) the reason you're ranging is because the big bad guy uses a magic-based attack. Thus, your suggestion of a Torag Helm, while appropriate for some monsters, is worse than a simple Mind Helm for most.

Great read. The reason I still hit this board is for guides like this. Not pictures.

Well done. :)

Great guide, I learned alot. I didn't find it messy at all. Why would anyone but a complete noob need pics? I mean seriously: This is the Kalphite Queen. You want to use performance gear on her. The only place I can possibly see pictures are for the rock cakes/perhaps jangerberry locations, as those aren't as blatantly obvious. Those however, are more than gravy, and as long as the meat is there I'm good.

Another thing to consider is giving some examples for performance monsters, such as special cases, etc. Yet another item to consider is the wilderness: Many players, in my opinion, would appreciate a 'don't bring this' because the wilderness, while not always steady, is a difficult area to gamble in efficiently. This is a big issue when using barrows, etc. because some players want to risk more/less.

Another thing to consider is a 'scale' for the GER/price&risk. This would be of good use in the wilderness, etc. where you are not always sure how much to risk in order to gain.

Overall, a very good guide. I don't find anything more needed ,but it might be nice to buff your guide.

Like he said. Awesome guide. This is what a real guide is supposed to be in my opinion.

But one point is that the redemption/jangerberries trick is not totally clear for me. But that could be me. Besides it's not really likely I'm going to use that trick for the next few months. :P

nice guide; too bad i'm f2p.

FTL.

There are a few F2P items that can be switched around as well:

Amulets: Power (max attack, mixed str/def), Strength (max strength), defence (max defence), Magic (max attack magic).

Chainbody for extra melee defence on a ranger or mage.

If you have an excess of one stat, you can afford to compromise it with equipment that favours another, the classic mixed setup being ranged armour if you melee against magic.

The main point is that the "best" kit for your current combat style, may not be the most effective in a situation.

Okay, you mention restock time. What if we are protecting ourselves from attack in whatever way possible? Praying at elves with the altar, safespotting behind a fence, attacking caged monsters. What armour do you suggest for that sort of training? Just maximum range/mage/melee+strength bonus?
