Yeah we all need a little conformity in our lives, or else we'd be known to the general population as freaks, and you wouldn't want that would you. Though I think over-dosing on conformity is such a low personal trait, and not having any uniqueness about you isn't something I like in a person.

if no one conformd it would not have to be a problem

and i dont realy conform if i dont like the thing but want to get with a group of people but i some times wil try if i like it (no not theft and such #-o )

If no-one conformed then we'd all most likely be different completely. Is that a good or bad thing? :-k

Everyone conforms to an extent. I think. >.>

Anyway, although the issue hasn't come up too often, if my friends are doing something that doesn't sit right with me morally, then I won't do it. Maybe I have low morals.. :?

Thats much better than complying to do something you dont think is right. Peoples morals are all different, though some are to be questioned.

I know it might offend some people but I think conforming is a sign of weakness. Others might think that not conforming is stupid though..

I like to think that, being a teenager, underage drinking/smoking and other stuff can be good at times but it has it's limits.. Maybe if more people decide not to be conformist there wouldn't be so much steriotypes :|

You make it sound like hanging with your friends is conforming, you can go with them and not drink or smoke, you can hang out. I smoke and drink but I have a few straight-edge friends who still like to come to partys with me just for the scene and the cool people, it's fun regardless of what you do.

Non conforming sort of makes you a goth, wich sort of makes you gay.(I'm jk, but seriously goths are losers)

I hardly do, only when I'm trying to avoid getting introuble, otherwise I'll try to convince others to see my point of view(without using a forceful or annoying method). I prefer to be seen more as a leader rather then a follower.

Ok, this is complex, because conformism exists on a number of levels. The question of whether or not to smoke / drink is only on a small level. Sure, it's one of the most common and well-known, but what if we changed the context? Note: these are purely my opinions. No one has to agree.

I don't think people choose to conform to situations on their own accord - I think they subconsciously force themselves too, not so much fuelled by a fear of what others will think of them, but a fear for themselves. This is farfetched, but take a look at World War II. Totalitarianism in full swing. What if you didn't conform? Despite the atrocities of certain nations, the majority of their citizens 'conformed'. Of course - there's the issue of indoctrination. Where's the line between being asked / forced to do something (i.e. conform) and to be indoctrinated into doing something? Or are they the same thing?

I'm a political freak, so I'm more interested in affairs on a world scale. And, I think I've officially confused myself.

ASIDE EDIT: For anyone who's read The Crucible (a powerful play by Arthur Miller), here's another point of view. The issue of conformism is an example of inner conflict. Having studied The Crucible with 'conflict' as its focus, it's possible to say that people avoid inner conflict by escaping / freeing themselves of external judgement. So, essentially: by not conforming (by following their 'heart'.. AÃÆÃâÃâïe, here's a touch of Romanticism), you escape the inner conflict or whether or not you should conform. I don't believe this as being ignorant. Actually, yes, I've confused myself.

You make some good points there. I remember reading the crucible and watching the movie. They all believe that witchcraft is evil or something (bad memory) and basically they all just go with it and conform to the society they are in and end up killing the innocent guy.

@ The bold, I agree totally, conformity is seen as a need by those doing it, but I think in many instances (including the schoolyard scenario) it is fueled by what others will think of you.

I like this! This is kinda what I wanted to say, but I have no knack for putting things into words. This thread is kinda stupid (no offence!) in a way because it's just an excuse for everyone to say "I'm a non-conformist!" when everyone conforms subconsciously, otherwise we would have no society or culture. (Although without sounding harsh, I believe English culture is next to none, and that that does remain I think little of..). But yes, back on topic, nicely put, even if you did confuse yourself!

I don't think its stupid. It can lead to some productive discussion. Do you really think everyone has been replying like - 'I don't conform, because i'm better than you and conformity is stupid.'? I don't think so.
