Ground is a really bad one, I feel like the hard minerals are in there, and for some reason my saliva tastes really salty... Im starting to sound crazy, Im going to shut up now. ~ W ~

The prevailing current theory is that usually the brain combines senses together automatically.. so that you can tell that the person whose lips you see moving, is also the one whose voice you can hear. There is feedback from these multimodal systems (sight-sound system) to lower level systems (the sight system and the sound system) that is usually inhibited. However, in synaesthesia this feedback is not inhibited. According to this theory, certain drugs will also disinhibit the feedback. They had something on tv awhile back and there were 3 sisters(triplets? I don't remember >_>) but every letter had a different color to them and all 3 of them had different colors for everything. They also said they wouldn't want to change since it'd be like watching a movie in color to watching a movie in black and white-except instead of a movie, it's reading.

Sorry to be going off topic, but where'd you hear this- I've never heard this before. Granted, they both analyze molecules in a way (I think they both too, smell does), but what does taste have to do with smell? You smell with receptors in your nose, taste is primarily from taste buds interacting with food + saliva

January 25, 200719 yr On a science program there was this relitively normal savant (that's wierd in itself as they are almost always [developmentally delayed]ed in some way) who thought of numbers as lights, colours and personalities or something like that and he could recite pi off the top of his head to 22 thousand or so decimal places. :shock:

If that's what you are saying, then yes - it is due to its effects on the brain. Concerning taste and smell, try eating something while holding your nose, and you can find that it tastes quite different without the smell, because the two systems are so integrated. Concerning savants, yes - most of them have Aspergers Syndrome or Autism. However, I too saw a programme some years ago with a synaesthete that had an amazing memory. The programme suggested that it was because remembering for them was such a rich perceptual experience that it made it much easier. Obviously, if every number isn't just an abstract number, but has its own taste or colour, it makes it much more memorable. January 26, 200719 yr I don't have to eat sour candy to get its feeling. I just think about it or hear someone say "sour" and I get a strong taste in my mouth. It's alright though, I love it, and I don't think any sour candies can compare to how sour my mouth gets when this happens. It happened twice while I was typing this. For many different tastes, when I think of the word or hear it, I can get the feeling in my mouth. Instead of recognizing "cheesey" when I hear it as an adjective or word, I recognize it as an actual taste. It's actually quite harmless* and cool, its kinda like taste-bud memory. *Harmless as in I've never had any trouble with it, except its kinda akward wanting to pucker your lips when you hear the word "sour" EDIT: I also have other small things but its basically what I associate things with and not a direct signal to my brain that brings up the color red when I see/think the number 4, etc etc.

The sound *shudder* of paper *shudder* being folded by pinching and pulling *huge shudder* gives me a taste of cotton in my mouth. Then it sends shivers down my back. Just thinking about it stinks... ~M

Problem with that is, it's not triggered if I see it coming and want it to happen, it's only triggered when the thought or sound of the word is made all of a sudden.
January 26, 200719 yr xvillexvalox, I think that what happens to you is a kind of Pavlo's bell like thing. You know that if you eat something sour your taste buds will do that. So, if you see something sour, you think sour and it can happen. The sour effect happens to a lot of people. ~M
