DVDs: Fullscreen vs. Widescreen

With the DVD movement lately, your choices in movies have gotten more complex. There are several editions available, varying screen shapes, rated vs unrated, special editions and others.

The rated and unrated are usually very little difference, more of a marketing ploy as i'm sure most of you are aware of by now. Special editions are just a way to sell more copies, usually including more extras which you'll probably watch once and not again.

However the aspect ratio is a noticable difference. What I am curious about is, which do you prefer? or which do you usually buy?

With widescreen, you (usually) end up getting the movie as it was intended to be shown in a theater, and is usually what most film buffs tend to prefer. With fullscreen, usually pieces are cut off the sides, but it is zoomed in on and fits your standard television. Fullscreen typically usually panning and scanning to view parts of the picture where the most action is happening at the time.

Both have their ups and downs in my opinion, and I wouldn't mind seeing more DVDs include both formats together. Either as a duel sided disc, or including two discs with one on each.

I have a 32" Widescreen TV. When I watch stuff in widescreen it IS fullscreen. Nothing gets chopped off and its plenty big enough

Fullscreen. I don't have a widescreen TV, but my dad got an LCD TV and but I haven't seen any widescreen movies on it yet. I mostly watch movies on my PC, since overscan is annoying and I can use headphones, rewind as much as I like, and use subtitles.

Fullscreen vs. widescreen? Eh? You mean the traditional 4:3/5:4 vs 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio? I prefer widescreen. I have a widescreen monitor and I just like it better than my old traditional 4:3 screen.

*gasp* fullscreen?

about 100 out of my 1,500 dvds are fullscreen... mainly the ones i bought back in 1994 (maybe 95?) with me first dvd player...(that year my tv was still fullscreen)

also it's amazing how slow people are to upgrade...my mom has had a email adress since 1984 :P

I never really had/have a specific opinion, but sometimes widescreen movies are a little *too* widescreen :? Maybe it's just me, but they seem so small and I can't stand it. That's the only time I'd choose fullscreen, but other than that it doesn't really affect me.

With widescreen and a large TV and the volume up and lights off it feels like you are at the theater. Get popcorn and a cuppa soda if you usually have those when you go to a theater.
