February 18, 200719 yr they speak "US english" (which is NOT english) No. We speak American. No, you speak Americanized English, don't try and pretend otherwise. As for the religion/language analogy, very few people kill each other over the spelling of onomatopoeia or the correct usage of there. Not going to comment on the US topic as I have no idea of the legal issues (I unlike some don't comment on things I don't know about). Just correcting some errors :P
February 19, 200719 yr I agree that it would be easier if everyone spoke the same language, but I don't think that knowing English should be a requirement to be a citizen.
February 19, 200719 yr I don't think it should be required but its better if they do learn it. Its your choice if you want to learn it or not and If you want to suceed more you can learn it. My mom moved to America from Mexico and didnt know any English but she eventually learned it pretty well and became a citizen and she's doing pretty good. pixel sig and avatar by me.
February 19, 200719 yr I agree that it would be easier if everyone spoke the same language, but I don't think that knowing English should be a requirement to be a citizen. I agree, it'd be nice if everyone did, but it'd be stupid to force to understand the language, but it seems so..conformist and one-minded to force everyone to know the same language. Just doesn't sit well with me at all. English is a VERY hard language to learn, and forcing everybody to know it is going to ruin the multi-cultural country the US prides itself in.

February 19, 200719 yr Author English is a VERY hard language to learn, and forcing everybody to know it is going to ruin the multi-cultural country the US prides itself in. No it isn't. English is my 4th language (I knew 3 Filipino dialects beforehand) and it's not anymore complicated than other languages. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::

February 19, 200719 yr Maybe we should force everyone to be christian, since it's our main religion? Yes but theres a huge diffrence between A language thats used in everyday life and joining the fanclub of a popular book. And if your Chirstan you should read and pray every day. If you're going to be a part of a nation, it's your job to fit in. USA isn't an English nation, it was also inhabited by dutch, germans, scandinavians, italians, spaniards, irish, scottish, asian, north african... It's not self explanatory, hence the USA has no official language. O RLY? I guess my Civics teacher must be wrong, and my sate legislature. I thought to become a citizen from another country, you had to learn basic US history, English (Spelling & writing) :? You are correct, but when becoming a citizen was legal back then they learned basic English, I mean very very basic and some history. After time they forgot about it. Unless if its the 1800s because I dont think they had to learn basic English or history. Me personally, dont see the problem with not learning English. It is a 'free' country and we're entitled to speak our own language if we wish. The test to become a u.s. is in English. You may not have to speak English to have a green card though.
February 19, 200719 yr Author United States, been to Canada, Mexico and Central Europe. im.. not talking to you? :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
February 19, 200719 yr Me personally, dont see the problem with not learning English. It is a 'free' country and we're entitled to speak our own language if we wish. Then don't bother with the citizenship? Don't be an American if you choose not to learn English. There's no point of a country if it's so unorganized because its citizens are too stubborn to learn one language. People come to America to get a better life and get a job, NOT to become American patriots. Yes, learning English now symbolizes your patriotism to America! Yay! Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!
February 19, 200719 yr I believe that keeping culuture and all is a very important objective in life and you should never let your race be dissolved but I believe its also mandatory to know the main language of the country you are a citizen of for communication purposes and safety/emergencies and such. I'm not saying you should desert your language, just that you should be able to communicate with the people in the same nation. And the excuse "english is too difficult to learn" is not valid because there have been people who started to speak full setences in an understandable version of english in 3 weeks of starting to learn. My uncle learned english as his 3rd language by age 12 and I have a friend who came from Cuba and she learned english in about a month or so(although dedicated and couldn't say may large english words, etc.) The point is, if there is a will there is a way.
February 19, 200719 yr United States, been to Canada, Mexico and Central Europe. im.. not talking to you? You were.
February 19, 200719 yr I do believe people in America should learn English. Annoying as hell when an immigrant doesn't know how to ask for help in your language...but if they were made to speak all English, all sense of cultural pride would be diminished. I highly doubt anyone wants that. I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.
February 19, 200719 yr 100% agree. On steven Colbert I thought it was funny when he was putting his voice out on this on 'the word' he said 'An epidemic is happening, not enough grass; too many immgrants'. I think this relates becuase yes, it is one of the only things that they can do without knowing the lanugage. I am hoping that I don't get flammed to much. I didn't think about this too much, I just threw something out. :
February 19, 200719 yr The Tip it Forumers will save America. Seriously, why are you guys concerned? ~Defender~ Are you an idiot? By this logic, why should we even have a forum where we discuss current news...? Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

Just correcting some errors :P Speaking as the very few, I would like to say that the foreign exchange students in my school speak better English than the regular students. I used to have a link to my school's project to provide fresh water to a Kenyan Village, but the sig police changed the link to say something, which, if followed, leads to an "ahem" adult website. Let me ask you. Which do you think is worse?

Ironically, posted by somebody with an impressive grasp of spelling and grammar in English..... He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
February 19, 200719 yr I don't care if people don't learn English. I DO care if people protest against jobs/government for limiting their oportunities. I.E. certain jobs/government positions. That is just wrong. Training my pure!
February 19, 200719 yr the problem is not that people arent learning english before arriving in the us, its that there is a massive number of mexican immagrants coming to the united states, to the point where they no longer assimilate into the public. they are effectivly creating a 2 class system in the united states that no one wants. in the past, people immagrated that knew different languadges, but they didnt come in the massive numbers they do now, somthing on the order of 20 million people. it also doesent help that the mexican goverment is not supporting the fight against illegal immagrants. this is because the BIGGEST source of income to mexico is illegal immagrants sending money home to mexico. the easiest way to solve the problem (and the one that would fund a wall) would be to levee large fines on enployers of illegals (say 50 grand a pop). that would stop enployment, stop the money flow, stop immagration AND fund a nice big wall along the border, some machine guns there too, and all the money we would ever need to deport millions of them. well, if we build a big enough wall with mexico, or attack them itll fix the problem ...The future generation is disappointing. better then my first post? or are you a hippie?

Which is quite dissappointing. Republican? With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
February 19, 200719 yr English is not the US's official language. I agree that people should learn English before becoming citizens though. Losers...Are you blind or ignoring me on purpose?Even though I sometimes side with religious people in some debates, I no longer consider myself religious.
February 19, 200719 yr Speaking as the very few, I would like to say that the foreign exchange students in my school speak better English than the regular students. I had a similar experience myself, when i went for my interview at Oxford Uni (I got in by the way to do law :D ) I met about 10 people, 4 English, 1 Albanian, 1 African, 1 Italian, 1 Polish, 1 German (boy did those two not like each other) and 1 Scottish. The only one who I couldn't understand to the point of asking for repetition was the Scottish guy - the only one with English as his first language. Go figure :-k

February 20, 200719 yr I feel so bad for those Mexican's... Can you imagine how hard it is to learn a language where many people of the country, who speak one language, can't even get it down? That would so suck. My Farewell thread. Please post nicely, or die. :^_^:Yea, I'd vote for him too. But I don't think they let Iraqis vote :P
