You should be eating fruits often anyways (I'd prefer clementines over oranges, easier to peel and smaller, also sweeter)

Try asking your parents to shop at a health grocery store next time they go out, maybe just for one time so they can try stuff out, compared to regular grocery stores, there's a bigger variety of foods in health stores (in contrast to having 4158643 brands of the same food), theres bound to be something they like.

Don't be afraid to try out anything, heck theres a juice called "Green Plant", the liquid is completely dark green, and somewhat thick, hard to get yourself to drink it first, but it tastes wonderful, and also has calcium, vitamin c, vitamin a, iron, and some protien. (Really healthy for you)

And excercising, it is good for you, although I'd rather recomnd cardio training (aerobic excercises, running) over just weight lifting or something of that sort.

A few days ago, I went out running with my dog, and it was the first time I've ever ran 3.5 miles non-stop (and that was in the cold :) ), I feel like this new diet is helping my heart lots to.

EDIT:

Defender,

Trader Joes and Whole Foods shouldn't be to hard to find locally in the US.

As for my research, its from when I started considering Vegetarianism, if you want me to find a source for a specific statement I made, I can try and look it up agian, although it wouldn't be to difficult to look it up yourself if you're really interested.

Also, http://www.stonyfield.com <- supposably the most humane dairy company out there, the Organic Trader Joes milk is actually also bought from Stonyfield and anouther humane milk company, depending on the prices that those companies sell at the time to them.

Yea, and it costs about 10x the cost of normal food. Especially anything whole.

Viktorkrum,

x10 is an exageration, milk usually has the largest price gaps from organic to non, as much as 5 dollars a gallon. (about 2x the regular price)

And Trader Joes stores try and price all the food as low as the can, and they buy directly from producers.

(And they always have a sampling table somewhere, with atleast 1 drink and 1 food dish)

"For every person that turns vegetarian, 10,000 Animals are slain to feed America."

"Gentlemen, we received 20 calls last night about the David Hyde Pierce incident.

As you know, one call equals a billion people. So, 20 billion people were offended by this."

I hope now you realise how pointless your statement was. Thank you, Family Guy, once more.

Well there are only about 6 billion people on earth lol.

1.I've been a vegitarian since i was 10.

Agreeing points and other fun facts: a. I never get acne or zits either. GO HERBIVORES!

b. All of my friends except one are meat eaters. I am taller than them by 1-5 inches.

c. vegitarian/ tofu meats and foods are 10X better than regular meat.

d. there are many other ways to get protein, such as beans and lentils, peanuts, vegitarian meats, etc..

e. people who eat meat are more than 40- 50% likely to get colon cancer. boo colon cancer (my grandpa died from colon cancer  )

f. a lot of vegitarians dont do it because they feel sorry for the poor animals, its because the bad nutritional values and often the taste of meat

g.Vegan and vegitarianism are not the same things. vegans dont eat meat, and they also dont eat dairy products, and other types of foods. Vegitarians still eat dairy products (unless lactose intalerant, that may or may not be classified as vegan)

h. vegitarians are healthier, and leaner. Don't have such high concentration of estrogen and other hormones, and they have a better view on dieting.

i. HEALTHY FOODS ARE NOT GROSS! Vegtables such as cauliflower (sp), broccoli, TOFU (rocks your socks), lettuce, radishes..etc..are very good, and very healthy. eat salad!!! yay salad... Fruits, are wonderful, sweet, and have lots of vitmins. That rocks doesn't it? Yay.

j. Smoothies and other fun ways to make healthy foods taste better or appeal more to you.. and cooking is fun!

k. Meats can raise likelyhood of heart disease by 30-55 %! And women who eat 2-3 servings of rare meat every day are 5-10X more likely to get breast cancer.

l. dont want to go vegitarian? CUT OUT BEEF AND PORK FROM YOUR DIET! Those are very unhealthy, and fattening meats. Eat skinless chicken, and try to steer clear of too much fried foods, eat fish! FISH IS EXTREMELY HEALTHY! If it is cooked and prepared well, it also tastes delicious. Also, Sushi, when prepared freshly, is excellent, exotic, healthy, and delicious! And a new expirience. Those of you who are like.. Dude, i think ill go get a burger or something.. NO! Burgers are not healthy at all. You can do better than that.

Convincing enough? No? well just eat healthier meats. I dont have a problem with meat eaters, so DO NOT FORM A PROBLEM WITH ME. If you dont like the information i have given? Keep it to yourself. Go ahead and say "boy, that guthix_girl is really messed up." keep it to yourself. and just because you disagree with me, no need to cause or start an argument. This is just my point of view and some fun facts i have learned over the years.

You may ask why bother going vegitarian? Well if you eat right and get other sources of protein, you will live a healthier, and happier life. (excersize might help..)

2. GO YOU, xvillexvalox! CONGRATULATIONS ON BECOMING A VEGITARIAN! Keep at it!

3. Any other questions? You can ask me, xvillexvalox, or google it.. google is power.

I hope i answered something or other, or gave other vegitarians or soon to be vegitarians more information, and if not.. i just pointed out the obvious... so yeah. thanks for reading (if you got this far without dieing of boredom.) i think more people should become vegitarians for better, healthier lives. GO TALL PEOPLE! and if you have a problem with vegitarianism? Then eat meat. Meat also has sufficient sources of protein, etc. Just eat healthy types of meat, eat lots of chicken and fish too.

Never take life too seriously, nobody gets out alive.

Congratulations to you! =D>

I've been thinking long and hard about becoming a vegetarian, and I'm still thinking about it. It's definitely a healthier lifestyle, and meat, overall, is disgusting to me. When I look at meat, it makes me disgusted and sad for the poor animal that had to turn into food.

^^ Really just one of the first and only replies I read, but I completely agree. I'd really like to become a vegetarian and I hardly eat any meat now as it is.. But I'm not entirely sure that I could give up the very few meats I do eat (i.e. pepperoni pizza, salame sandwiches, pasta bolognese, the occasional cheeseburger, and that's really about it).

I really just find the whole concept of eating certain kinds of meats disgusting. Just because I find them gross, I usually shy away from most forms of sea food, beef, pork and generally all red meat. It's not because I think they're unhealthy, I just think they're gross (conceptually and bad tasting).

The other problem with me becoming a vegetarian, other than what I mentioned above (that I don't know if I could be able to give up the few meats I do eat), is my mother. I doubt she would even let me become a vegetarian.

I'd say more but I'm tired of thinking of stuff to say O:)

All and all, congratulations on your fine achievement :)

And yeah humans are very cruel for chopping up animals to eat and survive. Would those PETA jack [wagon] prefer we lunge right at them and sink our teeth in to their throat, then rip their stomach apart while they're still alive like all other predators do?

It's always baffled me why people are against eating meat because it's 'cruel' when any carnivore in nature takes down it's prey brutally and sometimes it's not an instant kill. Every kill humans make these days is more or less instant. Some would argue that the animals we breed to kill live in poor environments yet animals in nature can starve when prey population die off/migrate or if there is a drought etc.

Nature is cruel. Focusing on humans brutality towards animals is.. well.. wierd to me.

I've tried going vegetarian. I was ok for the first couple of days, but after a while I felt more tired than usual. Most likely due to an unbalanced diet.

So now I just eat dairy foods and seafood.

If I may add one piece of advice. Eat lots of raw food such as sprouts. Also avoid microwaved veggies (microwaved anything for that matter).

For those of you who have trouble digesting raw food, cooking it over low heat just briefly will take care of this, without sacrificing its nutritional value.

One More Thing

Make sure you are eating foods of a similar group, so that your body's enzymes can absorb the nutrients.

I'm not vegetarian, but I do eat lots and lots of fruit and vegetables, in addition to my meat. I just don't think I could quite give it up - having lived my whole life eating meat, if I had been vegetarian since I started on solid foods I would be happy with it, probably. I love tri tips, steak, burgers, and seafood. But I also eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and other such, even though tofu = very gross, to my mind at least. Sorry vegetarians, if I insulted your favorite food, but...I just can't eat it. :-X

Guthix_girl, How old are you now? (Since I know you were 10 when you started)

And also, I love tofu <3: I've been eating tofu since before being vegetarian, my mom makes a killer tofu enchilada.

Tofu tastes like solid water by itself uncooked,

but if you cook it with sweet/sour sauce, it soaks up flavor,

anything that you can cook tofu with will get it's flavor soaked up by the tofu, so it's impossible to not like any tofu at all.

Oh and Lageris, if you weren't expecting reasons to be Vegetarian, you obviously didn't read the "and why" part of the thread title.

What on earth is tofu? (chemically I mean).

It's made from bean curd. Kinda how they make cheese. they let the soy milk curdle and condense, then they cut it into blocks.

Yeah, I'll also have to mention that it's the healthy balance of food because you were trying so hard that made you fitter.

When you were eating meat, you even admitted you didn't eat it often. That's already a bad balance. So saying that you got healthier from going vegetarian is false.

Talk to a decent dietitian, they'll tell you the same.

PS. I can't really talk about balance. I don't have breakfast, I rarely have lunch, sometimes have dinner and every so often I'll have a snack before bed. I get tired walking up 2 sets of stairs... :-$

Notoriously Trollish.

Hmm...This seems interesting...Could you give some examples of what you might eat in a day, and where you learned most of your info? I'm interested in trying ::'

Hahaha

why don't some vegetarians eat eggs or milk??? thats what i don't get....

Because milk and egg companies are supposably cruel, but they're not and it doesn't matter anyway.

i'm thinking about becoming a vegitarian, but i will still eat fish. but i love bacon so much. :wall: i dont think i could do it.i might be a no-beef vegitarian.

and its not to lose weight or to keep my figure. thats just stupid talk.

Anyways, I've been a vegetarian my entire life, (sort of) because of my religion. Its nice to see that you are "surviving" and thriving from this decision :). If you need any recepies or meal ideas, feel free to ask.

No one respondez to my Qs :-(

Sorry, just got back on.

Ussually I eat waffles with jam/jelly or hazlenut cocoa spread in the mornings along with a glass of "Trader Joe's GreenPlant Juice" (Way better than it looks[its completely green]) or some fruit juice.

Other days I'll eat mac and cheese for breakfast or granola cereal with hemp seeds. OR I can heat up a soydog wrapped in a tortilla with cheese (40 secounds)if i'm in a rush. And ALWAYS, a multivitamin that I probably don't need.

For school lunches I eat PB&J, carrots/celery/broccoli with ranch dip, pudding, cheese pizza, cheese stuffed breadsticks, with candy and/or fruit pies. To drink, I get water or propel (Propel has vitamin b12 in it)

For dinner I usually have a homecooked meal, consisting of Tofu or soymeats, speghetti with soyballs, Tofu enchiladas, scrambled tofu(Vegan replacement for scrambled eggs), theres far to many dinner options, infact I don't think I've had the same dinner twice since I started.

Vegan foods... http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/

Vegetarian foods... http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/eat.html

Although, of course the lists aren't full, and theres much more

Many statements I made can be found back here, http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/

Also, search around for vegan atheletes, vegan runners, vegan bodybuilders, often their website have details on their lives and what the eat and why it helps.
