Are players today forgetting the word "fun"?

Featured Replies

Recently we've all known that the new skills are fun and that some people criticize RS for not having "cash" skills. I'm not sure if this is a good debate but it is something interesting that people act like they forgot the word "fun" in RS.

Wookiee ideas: Now, what I think about this is that some people like fun skills and some want money-making skills. In my case I like fun skills and occasionally I use the money-making skills for cash like all of you do. Many people do the "get rich now" idea at times and you could fail and then blame Jagex depending on who you are. I could be wrong but I think that so many people think that skill = bad unless it's money making. Construction is a good example because although it is very expensive, the point of it is to make things "fun" for your house. Without construction there would be no tablets, without construction there would be no FREE khrayll portal for barrowing, and without construction there would be no place to save up bank space.

Although hunter sounds kinda pointless, it's a fun skill.

Anyway, your views on the "skills suck unless they give cash" issue?

We should euthanize anyone who lacks the capability to contribute to society in any way.

Please don't elect this man for president in 2012

My favorite skill is probably firemaking so.... no money there eh? ::'

I think people are forgetting what "fun" is. I like to do quests, level hunter, and just explore new land without having a guide for it. Quests do some stuff, but exploring and hunter don't give that much.

R.I.P The Old Nite. Heroes get remembered. But Legends never die. You were truly a Runescape Legend

But you have to figure out what everyone's definition of fun is. For some players, the money making aspect of the game is their favorite part. Any update that isn't a part of that, obviously isn't going to be fun for them.

Jagex (or any company) will never make a product/update/addition that will please every single customer. But they do seem to try to balance things. 2 new "fun" non-money making skills, but they've also added new treasure trails items twice in the last year (as well as other things for both sides, just picking those 2 as examples).

People just have to remember that not every update is tailor made for them, and that one person's junky update might be another player's fun.

If Jagex ever made a perfect update, there would be players complaining about nothing to complain about.

Well, I kinda balance out between the two. Often, for a lot of time, I do the boring stuff to make crazy cash, then after that, I do something fun for a change.

You're being watched.

I found fletching fun, and that made me money...

However, some people become some inticed with being the best, they no-(va)-life away, trying to do skills they hate, just to make money they want.

I hated r'cing, but it was still the fastest way to make money.

I think that 95% of runescapers find new skills fun......well until the novalty wears off after 4 weeks or so.

I personally believe that recent skills like hunter and construction have been under-developed and 'rush released'. The hunter skill lacked useful products that we can make, with the skill stopping at lvl 71......

Conclution: Every has different ideas of fun, so someone will always be happy with something and others will always disagre.

Timmy is so good at it that people ask him for help.

He Said Excuse me Hell Slayer can I speak to you for a moment, would you like to join a clan called The White Legion?

Its your items and to have someone steal it, without hesitation, its just wrong.

Although hunter sounds kinda pointless, it's a fun skill.

It's not very much more fun than any other skill, at least in my opinion. At the beginning it's fun to constantly switch hunting spots and try new things, but eventually training it becomes just as repetitive (if slightly more strategic) than almost every other skill in the game.

I think that, ideally, in a game like Runescape everything should be "fun." When skilling becomes the same thing over and over again, it seems to me like a waste of time- making skilling fun should be the primary goal of the game. Had Barbarian Assault offered exp rewards- collecter for herblore, attacker for combat, defender for hunter, etc., the minigame would be much better because it would be a way to train that is actually enjoyable. The exp does not need to be sickening or even better than regularly powertraining the skill (although the lack of monetary profit could be a balancing factor), but more people would definitely play Barbarian Assault and runescape would be a better game. I like the sq'irk minigame because it's fun, addicting, and is a decent way to train thieving in the summer garden. Hopefully, the fishing trawler update this month will make that minigame a more effective way to train while actually having a good time.

Fun should not be sacrificed for efficient training- the point of RS is that they should go hand-in-hand. People play games for fun, not to click on the same thing 5,000 times.

Not all skills should give cash, that way to train them you have to use the skills that do such as fletching, fishing, woodcutting, or mining.

Dragon Drops: D spear x 2, D skirt, D half-shield, D axe, D 2h

Barrows Rewards: Ahrims hood, Karil's Coif, half key x 6, D med, torags legs, veracs flail

I like to level all skills in the pursuit of all 99's. I enjoy some skills more then other but I don't exclude a skill just because "it doesn't make money".

meh, so you think clicking in one spot over and over is fun?

the game isn't fun its for time wasteing, the fun comes from the sense of achieviement at gaining a level or infact an item. items cost money.

conclusion: rs isnt fun!! you click your mouse whilst sitting in your bedroom pushing keys! you just like the feeling you get when you complete something that took a lot of time and effort to achive.

For the most part, yes. They do something they hate repeatedly to advance, in actuality, nothing. What did they gain? A new level? But a new level does you no good in real life. Now, if you were to train a skill you like and have fun, that's what the game should be about.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Meh,my stats show what i like to do in rs. :$

Money is not important for me.

Well, agility is pretty fun, it does get frustrating at times >_> (brimhaven) but it is fun. Also i believe quests are where the real fun lies. (without guides unless you REALLY need them)

I prefer quests that are fun for some time afterward over quests which get you 10 min of fun and are over with nothing to show for it.

I totally agree, especially the bolded part. Different people like different things for different reasons. I've talked to people who love the spirit of the hunter skill and I've seen people on the forums who despise it for it's lack of goals to strive for or monetary gains. Hunter simply does not support them, but other updates do. Notice how different updates have pleased different likes: the skillcapes update for people who like goal/achievement systems, DKings for the money people, Cold War! for fans of hidden references (like me) and the list goes on.

Finally the secrets of goal achieving are revealed! (give my guide a read :^_^: )

i am one of those rare freaks that like EXP over GP. I don't see the point of having 200m in the bank if its just sittin there to make me look "cool", take that GP and go buy some respectable skills ya choober face....

I have fun training a lot of my noncombat stats, most quests in my opinion not much fun.. Just my opinion tho

Hunter was fun, even though there was no point in it :)

Well, my view on it is most skills are not fun (woodcutting, mining, ect)

But they can make money, and after selling my santa and buying my supllies again, i do realise spending money is very...very fun

Im still not training woodcutting....

For some people getting rich is a goal. And as far as im concerned acheiving your personal goals is one of the funnest things you can do.

I've had people tell me that I should raise certain skills etc., but I simply do what I find fun in this game. I mean if it's not fun for me I usually don't do it, unless the reward for doing it will be fun/benefit me.

I just switch form skil to skill, because there is nothing fun about it. ( just switched from chopping yews to pwning f2pers because the tree wasn't tryign to kill me  )
