I Won The Lottery!

I *think* that most winnings from lotteries get paid out in smaller chunks over the period of many years. If you won a 20 million lottery they might pay you 1 million a year for 20 years or something. It's still not shabby but I would think a ton of the money would be lost through inflation during that time. Someone correct me if I am wrong since I don't know this to be totally true everywhere.

Here in the states the big ones give you the option. You can get it all at once, but it's 30% less than if you get it over the time period.

its the other way around. if you want a lump sum you have to pay higher taxes which cut away a fair portion of the winnings. oh, and the mega millions lottery in the united states is up to 350 million today.

Thats what he said, read his post more carefuly.

It's not the other way around. If you get it all at once, it's less than if you get it over the time period. It is more advantageous for the lottery company to pay out over time rather than all at once.

It's much safer to take it as a balloon payment. People have this problem of blowing it all, and that's not smart. They do stupid things like buy a house without investing and without really checking real estate. And some invest loads into stocks or bonds without first consulting a brokerage firm or the likes.

I would have a huge party first of all.

Then i would buy season tickets to the Philadelphia Phillies for dugout seats

Next i would buy a plasma tv for my room. Then i would buy a 360 and a ps3

I would also buy like 100 games for each

I would buy a new phone and a whole bunch of minutes for it.

Then i would buy a new bike

I would see if i could buy an indoor basketball court next to my house.

I would also buy a whole bunch of b-balls

Finally i would put the rest into savings for college and a car when i am older and old enough to drive.

I would move to Martinique (It's a french island, I have no idea what's the name in english). I would invest most of it into a relatively low-risk way, just in order to make enough profit to live without working for my whole life. I would do a lot of travel. Aww, it would be soo wonderful, my life would totally change.

well, my grandparents actually won about $5 million a few years ago and guess what they did:

absolutely nothing!

thats right, they didnt buy anything, go anywhere, they just banked it and forgot about it.

To tell you the truth, I would do the same exact thing.

At first id do all the lifetime ambition stuff, travel the world etc.

Then i'd research into buying shares and investing in companys and begin that when i had sufficient knowledge.

The if i had many millions ad buy really nice penthouse apartments in the worlds major cities ie dubai, nyc ect.

of course its all only a dream... <.<

also i suppose id feel obliged to give a fair old whack to charity and do some charity work etc. to improve the lifesyle of others in more of a need than me

But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

I would buy the rights to all bad songs and forbid everyone to sing them ever again.

I'd probably keep under $1 million for myself and use it to buy a parcel of land in Alaska and house materials/necessities. Then probably donate the rest to charities or something.

You say that now, but $17 million to charity is an awfully lot of money, plus you'll need some to support that estate.

I really doubt if people will really give millions of dollars to charity if they win the lottery. I havn't seen it happen often and I doubt it will.

All that attention is bad too. Once you give it to charities they will ask you to give more, or other people will notice and want your money. There will be an ever lingering cloud of hobos around you.

Land in Alaska is actually really cheap. I certainly wouldn't need $20m to buy land and sustain it for a few years.

People always have doubt, and it's not really something I understand :P If I didn't give the rest of it to a charity, I certainly wouldn't buy anything. Not everybody in the world wants huge mansions and fancy cars. So far my life has consisted of a nice house, my dad collecting unnecessary cars and paintings, being sent to a private school and traveling the world. To be honest, I'm just sick of that and want exactly the opposite - a simply, remote, quiet life at home.

So if you asked me to spend $20m, I just couldn't do it. It would literally rot in a bank account, or wherever I decided to keep it. So why not give it away to people who actually need it?

moeny would probly just cause a lot more problems

but i mean like ppl have said

the best thing to do would be to not tell anyone and put it in the bank

altho this would be bascialy impossible to do - youre gonna tell someone and word would obviously spread like wildfire

so best thing to do is not play the lotta, and work hard in life

thats my take at least

when you work hard, you appreciate your stuff a lot more

and thats really good in life

The UK lottery pays it all out at once.

Most lotteries give you the choice between a lump sum payout and a gradual pension like plan.

Although, some insist on the gradual plan and then they don't fix it for inflation.

Also, you don't have to make a public appear after you win the lottery, that is also optional. If you don't want to they use a fill-in person. (Usually a fill-in family).

And whoever was bagging on the Telstra shares, T3 was the best investment I ever made, if you didn't make it then me and my money will be just laughing in the bank while you live on poor street smoking crack and playing dice.

Yeah, land here is quite cheap, depending on where you are. In my area, land and houses prices are both quite high. But if you go out into more rural places, the prices go down. Way down. And you can't really worry about food costs, grow some and go hunting for the rest. I'll recommend the moose. Yummy!

$34,738,638.93 USD

I would spend the lot buying property.

Medium houses that the general population can rent.

Because I would own them outright most of the rent is profit.

I'd give my parents some money to pay off the rest of the mortgage on our house, I wouldn't want to move to a bigger house. I would then probably buy myself a new bike as my current one is too small. I would also buy an Oxford United season ticket as I'd love to be able to say I support a football team and not be a glory seeker.

More long term I would probably just limit myself to spending the interest get from the bank and leave the capital in the bank until I was 18 or so. That way I wouldn't go crazy buying a ton of stuff I don't need. ::'
