6 March 2007 - Music Update

Featured Replies

We've just finished an enormous update to our music system to make the harps and bells of RuneScape's music all the sweeter.

Firstly, we've changed the underlying technology used to play the music. We've completely rewritten the music player from scratch, so it now uses a bank of instruments built into the game itself rather than using whatever your soundcard happens to have. This has the advantage that the music sounds the same regardless of your computer, rather than varying from machine to machine. This in turn allows us to fine-tune the music exactly, instead of having to try to get something which generally works. Our new music technology should also be more compatible, meaning the music works correctly on more operating systems and soundcards than before!

Secondly, we've gone through every single song in the game, (a huge undertaking: there are nearly 500 songs), and hand-tuned each one to sound optimal with our new instrument set! As a result, many of the songs are sounding better than ever before, and you can finally hear them as we intended them to sound.

You may also notice the shiny new button on the log-in page. This lets you turn off the log-in music to preserve your speakers while you pop off to get a snack or take a break, all without interfering with your music settings in-game.

So, if you've been put off listening to the music for one reason or another, now's the time to turn it on and enjoy the ambient delights!

We're still planning some more tweaks to the system to improve your auditory experience, so keep checking the front page for news.

In other news...

In addition to the big soundbank update today, we've added 'equip sounds' to armour and weapons.

I logged in today for a few minutes just to check out the music update and was surprisedly impressed. IMO, the music sounds alot better than before, which may not be saying much since it was pretty bad before, but i think i may be finding myself playing with the music on more often now.

Check out my Pocket Slot idea!

I've got a couple questions...

1) Does music work on Firefox?

2) Does music work on low detail?

I'm pretty sure the answer to both used to be "no", but I didn't know if anything has changed, either from this update, or previous ones.

Thanks...

Yes, I really like this new update. Espacially since I very often listen to the in-game music and not play songs on my computer.

[spoiler=Stats:]Updated December 22, 2011:

Total level - 1442 - 170M+ XP , Combat level - 115

Combat skills: Attack - 90, Defence - 99 (24.45m+ XP), Strength - 90, Constitution - 99 (16.42M+ XP) Ranged - 99 (13.32M+ XP), Prayer - 60, Magic - 99 (13.25M+ XP)

Non-Combat skills: Cooking - 99 (13.80M+ XP), Woodcutting - 99 (31.95M+ XP), Fishing - 90, Firemaking - 99 (24.82M+), Crafting - 90, Smithing - 90, Mining - 85, Runecrafting - 60, Dungeoneering - 85

I think it's a very nice improvement over the old song system, But I think it needs a little bit of smoothing out on some of the songs.

copyofsigtuxtimenf0.png

Some instruments simply do not sound proper- the clarinet, for example, sounds positively terrible during an interlude in Varrock's theme. Several of the other instruments either sound very tinny or akin to a car horn. "Harmony" - one of the few tracks I truly liked- was thoroughly ruined by the update.

Despite this, many songs turned out wonderfully through the update- Try "Flute Salad" or "Background."

It's a start- a step past MIDI- but it still needs tweaking.

You may also notice the shiny new button on the log-in page. This lets you turn off the log-in music to preserve your speakers while you pop off to get a snack or take a break, all without interfering with your music settings in-game.

Finally.. I've been so annoyed by that opening music... I would just turn my speakers off completely. But this is nice... :boohoo:

well, the answer to both is "yes".

I can't hear much of a difference to be honest.

They ruined the music for me :( My sound card uses high quality samples of real music instruments for midi song (the format used by runescape) and now that they are using their own samples instead of whatever your computer has they sound cheesey and cartoony to me. I want an option to turn off their samples and use my sound cards samples

ROSA PARKS HAS JUST BEEN HIT BY A PIECE OF CHICKEN

Retired until further notice since quite frankly RuneScape has been boring me and it's not getting any better and WoW happened.

It sounds better for me. Perhaps it's because of my computer . It still sucks for you guys.

I rarely listen to it, so I don't know if I like it better than before... But at least it works for me again!
