The New Clan Chat System!

 

August will begin with a new feature we're sure you'll all love: Clan Chat! You'll be able to set up your own chat channel that you and your clan-mates can use to keep in touch with each other, as well as being able to rank the members in your chat channel, control who can talk, and much, much more. It's an entirely new feature for RuneScape, but we have no doubt that you'll all take to it like fish to water.

How do you think this will affect clans? Are you glad that JAGeX is working on clan support?

It's taken them long enough. I'm eager to see how this feature works.

I like the idea. But the question is, how will it work? The clan chat thing will probably use the only unused tab. As for how the chat would work, maybe it will show up in the chat box in green.

i would rather use irc mainly because you will not be able to post links or cuss nice to see them try though.

Like I said on the *-P.K.M-* forums, I believe releasing chat first is another attempt to prevent players from using IRC on SS, & it will probably work.

Now the question is, will we stop using IRC? There are, of course, many benefits & disadvantages at the same time. One of which all clan members now can be in the clan chat without an excuse, but the amount of options RuneScape Clan Chat will have will be much, much less than an IRC chat room's.

If this is a p2p only feature, it will be useless for quite a few clans.

If it is f2p as well, IRC will take a big hit.

Im personally trying to not have an opinion about this thing before it comes out, it just seems like a worse version of IRC, unless they have something else special planned.

Another potential problem I see is that clan chat's could be duplicated.

Ex:

Leader of Sample Clan makes clan chat: Sample Clan

Wanna-be leader of Sample Clan makes clan chat: SampleClan

Fan of Sample Clan makes clan chat: Clan Sample

Ignorant person makes clan chat: Sample

If it is where F7 is for hotkeys, that would of sucked for F2p'ers "You must be on a member's server to do this" Good thing they thought ahead, on that point at least. I believe IRC and others will be used more due to what lack can be done on RS.

Quite a few in my clan can't use IRC, including me...so this will help us a lot.

It would seem that this matter is getting alot of attention. and yes I cross refrenced these two topics for easy refrence incase any one has multiple Imputs on the matter.

I am eagerly approaching the clan chat system, and although many are doubtful of its usefulness I prefer to take the cautiously optimistic approach.

I can see it helping a lot of clans in communication, especially the smaller ones. At the same time I believe irc will continue to be used by most clans anyway. I really think it could help in the wilderness, especially with communication - where is the main pile, what we are doing, relaying info privately.

Some limitations I am worried about is what if there is a max amount of people on it, say 50. That excludes most of my clan and results in the chat being useless in many scenarios. Another issue could be if a rival clan decides to try to create and own all channels associated with your clan name.

For example if your clan is called Warriors, a rival clan creates and owns all channels such as #w, #warrior-clan, #warriors - and you are left with some obscure stupid one.

Regardless, I will wait till it actually comes out before I come to a conclusion on the system. Until then I cannot wait to see what its like.

Can't wait to see what they've cooked up, they promised it back in march 2004 so they've had plenty of time to make it good. (one would think) :-w

Same with me. I just can't wait! It will probably be released next week though because the weekends are too busy and JAGeX is trying to minimize the lag as much as possible.

It'll be released in the first few days of the month :o

I still think irc will own it because clans will only use it when theyre pkin not all the time like irc because irc is open 24 hours and you dont need to be logged in to the game to have access to it.. should be very usefull pkin as a clan but thats all

i am pretty much going with what demonchild said. irc will still be used because u can say whatever u want and post links.

i do beleive that rs clan chat will be more beneficial during pk trips and such, but i am also concerned how jagex plans to moniter people trying to impersonate others.

as stated, i guess we will have to wait and see what it will be like.

tbh, im more excited about the new clothing styles they are promising... :P

Great points .. I didn't think of those. When people are on IRC, or in TeamSpeak .. it's uncensored depending on clan rules .. I know do next to no censoring in HaVok. People will revert to those types of norms when using clan chat .. and get in trouble, I am sure. Clans that have pmods will have to be uber careful .. will pose an interesting conundrum for sure.

Am concerned about registering clans .. will some noob hop on there and immediately register as many clans as he/she can and then sell that particular "clan chat?" How do you stop some noob from your clan that you don't want to have ownership rights from registering it?

Has Jagex posted the rules yet for it? It would be nice if they would do so before releasing it so we know what we are getting in to and can formulate a plan of attack ...

Personally - I would prefer to use IRC over the runescape clan chat.

Although it would be a good idea to message people who are all online, it wouldn't help for people offline.

Yes but it only take one noob who doesn't like your clan to ruin it...

I honestly don't think the channels will be named after the clans because I don't think Jagex would be that stupid....

Also, to people who say IRC would still be way easier, that is untrue. A lot of people have parents who have firewalls that block IRC. :x

Also, the clan I lead is very tight knit, so we would love to chat 24-7 even outside events.
