read the PvM article.

its impossible to make a monster that can outsmart any player. what separates machines from humans is that humans have an unlimited range of thinking, which means outside the box. programmed AI can only think within their program. in order to *outsmart* players, jagex must update the AI with new strategies every week as new methods to kill it are being discovered.

so, in short, no, there will never be a monster than can outsmart a player. machines' AI lacks the adaptive cability the human mind has

first post w00t!!

Hate it when people do that, just read it and then post; your not getting anything out of first post.

The Corporeal beast is the only monster in the game that I believe has yet to be killed by just a single player. It attacks with a variety of attacks and due to its sheer level and power its believed to be next to impossible to kill without having a team of players. This isnt really Jagex out smarting the player but more about Jagex putting in a monster that cant realistically be soloed.

Very true.

Will Jagex ever be able to create a monster that can completely outsmart the player? Probably not, however they will not stop trying and personally I cant wait to see what they try next!

I doubt it unless the monster is infact a member of staff playing as a NPC, chess computers use very sophisticated technology costing a lot of money just to beat a chess player; doubt Jagex will ever be able to incorporate such technology.

p v m

I dont think any monster will be able to "out smart" a player long term. Similair to revenants though a monster could be made to fight like a player and given a slight boost to make up for the weaker intelligence.

it was a fun read,i agree that no ai can outsmart a player at this point in time but technolegy(sp?) is always advansing...

i would love to see a boss that required smarts instead of brute strength though.

PvM

Jagex will eventually create more challenging monsters with better tactics it will just take them time and a good idea.

I personally can't wait for the day when that happens. It will be fun to see people relying on different methods than there is already out.

Its kind of impossible for a monster to outsmart a player in rs, but they may find a way to make onehard one day without just giving it sheer power.

well...theyre a step closer with the prayer on tormented demons/KQ. also, the dagonnath (sp) mother in lighthouse quest was also a nice touch, forces players to think on their toes

A Night With TET

Good to see the event made it into the Tip It times! I managed to stay for 13 of the 15 hours the event lasted. We really set the bar for the longest TET Event yet!

Evil Mumm Ra did a great job keeping the event together. He even managed to mute one of the more verbally abusive crashers we encountered. =D>

I remember seeing the author of the article for a bit. Quite a help against the dragon.

Oh, and the person in the chicken suit was Tacodude. He always wears that to the dangerous events. Always gives me a good laugh seeing him try to strike down the Rs Bosses dressed as a giant chicken. :D

A Night with TET

I went to bed after 5 hours and 17 minutes.

Woke up and they were still going. :P

Was a nice read. ::'

except for the many grammatical errors of cource ;)

#1 the author is dutch, they may have slightly different grammatical rules or something, give him a break.

#2 if you are going to talk about grammatical errors, point them out so that they can be fixed.

#3 i thought it was a very well written article, the unsung hero of the event is angel s bane though, we used his clan chat, and he had to add like 100 people to his friends list so we could all use lootshare.

i'll read the other articles in a bit, just got up, lol. i expect them to be good as always though!

All were great articles.

I don't have much to comment on PvM since I agree that it will be difficult for Jagex to come up with monsters that bounty-hungry players won't be able to figure out tactics to beat.

Saradomin's Sun was epic. I'm eagerly awaiting the next part!

I was there for only 2 hours. I missed the dragon med drop since I lagged just as everybody left (this lead to me screaming angrily at my Younger brother for no real reason :P) and I had to make my own way there. I got teleblocked by a rev so I had to wait to use the lever >.< I really enjoyed it though! The dolls were purely epic! I didn't know what was going on at first XDXD

I died on my way out of the KBD lair today since I didn't have the sense to leave before logging out last night so I lost the 2 hides that I got XD *pokes self* I had fun though :D

yes it was. makes me think of how much of a family Tip.It is. people with no regard for their own safety, only here to have fun and support each other in those dangerous situations. was a very inspiring read

P V M:

The only way for a monster to be able to outsmart of is if its a battle of riddles or something. In combat, the ones who aren't required by a program to do a predictable strategy will always lose if the human is prepared.

TET:

Sounds like it was fun, wish I had been there. It sounds like it woulda been better if they had split the group into multiple teams, and taken different worlds each, that way theres not complete chaos. But it woulda been just as hard to get into groups, so I guess the mass chaos is the best way.

If at first you don't succeed, don't try skydiving.

If you try to fail, and then succeed, what have you done?

If someone who draws is an artist, and someone who plays piano is a pianist, what do you call someone who races?

PVM

I'm surprised they didn't mention revenants, just because their combat levels aren't over 300 to be able to butcher unprepared players it a couple of hits it doesn't mean they aren't smart - i was frozen by a knight yesterday and was pretty shocked to see it move back out of my melee range and start maging/ranging me!

I'd say be careful what you wish for... if a monster were to arrive that combined the qualities of all of the slightly smarted ones we have already, though it would still be predictable, it would prove quite a challenge,

The AI will never be able to outwit you as such, not in this age, but being frozen and ranged, teleblocked to prevent escape, switching weapons to get through prayer, having to muster up that killing blow because they "eat" AND incorporating whatever special equipment jagex decides you need to kill them... intelligent or no you can't deny that wouldn't be a challenge - and i can't wait for it! =D

With regard to PvM, its fun to read the speculation. The reality is that its not very hard to create a creature that can outsmart any player in the game, regardless of their stats and resources. The problem that Jagex faces isn't that of insufficient artificial intelligence... it is a problem of creating an enjoyable challenge with good repeat playability.

If a creature has a super-high kill rate on players that challenge it, one of two things will happen (at least typically within the realm of Runescape). In the absence of a worthwhile payoff, most players will give up on it after a while, because of the futility of the effort. If there is a reward worthy of such an extreme challenge, then it may skew other areas of game play by giving the owners excessive advantages of one sort or another (the one possible exception being if it grants access to an exclusive area for additional gameplay or some such other unique feature of the game). Any monster foe needs to be hard enough to be challenging, but not so hard that people are consistently discouraged from facing it.

Ultimately, Jagex wants to create playable content that will appeal to at least a reasonably-sized audience, otherwise those development resources are better used elsewhere. They have been responsive to the increasing skill levels of players by progressively introducing more difficult creatures for us to confront. Make no mistake, though...this is not a reflection of the upper limits of their programmers abilities (or the Java platform) in most cases - it is simply a reflection of the practical realities involved in developing content for a diverse audience. So once it is all said and done, I think the important question is "Is it worthwhile to develop a monster that regularly outsmarts most of the players".

I agree with motarrunin. If the devs were to create an NPC that was nearly impossible to beat most players would give up or avoid them.

I also agree with what the PVM article says. It's often a race between introducing bigger, badder NPCs and releasing better items and equipment.

There was a small typo in the beginning of the paragraph about Dagganoth Kings. No worries though. "in the form of the form"
