(As a pre note, this is about Halifax, which is on the Atlantic coast. While there are significant cultural differences between the Maritimes [Atlantic] and the Pacific, I imagine that what I see here translates better to BC than it would to any other Province, except maybe New Brunswic. The biggest difference that comes to mind is I believe that the BC crime rate is substantially higher than ours, and your winters tend to the more mild/non-existent scale than ours in at least a few places) How different is it? In a very broad sense, I don't find the states to be a whole lot different when I have vacationed there, but never having actually lived in America, I don't know how this would actually hold up if I were part of your society. From a political standpoint, we are very different, being much more liberal than America is. Our most capitalist party (the conservatives) would probably be about the same as your democrats (maybe a little more right wing, but not much). Our system is also quite different, with provinces having a different power distribution versus our federal government than your states do, and our voting systems are more straightforward (though perhaps not better). But I think the day to day lives actually do play out fairly similarly, its just the underlying structure of the country that is different. Public transportation any good? This really depends on where you are. My experience with Metro Transit (this would be Halifax, Nova Scotia) is that its nothing near as good as owning a car, but that is probably not a fair comparison. They have a go time system, numbers you can call printed on the bus stops that tell you when the next two scheduled buses are for every bus at that stop, and the system is fairly accurate. If your only taking one bus, its normally not to bad, but people who have to take 2 or 3 are looking at 45-90 minute commutes easily for what would take a car 20-25. Crime rates are lower, how much lower? I couldn't give you the numbers, but lets just say that every local stabbing and murder makes the paper, and they aren't normally a daily occurance. Now, that's probably just as much a factor of Halifax's comparatively tiny population (general and gang) compared to most capitals, as it is a factor of our culture. You can probably google the crime rates for where you live, and anyplace you want to move to though. What is the food like? Honestly, its not much different. There seems to be a set of North American foods that know no borders. My only comment would be that on average, I think the portions in our restaurants run ever so slightly smaller than they do in the states (at least compared to Orlando Florida). Could one survive without a car? As long as your in a city, for sure you can, and a lot of people do. If your in a sub-urban area that is still close to the city, its possible but considerably less convenient than it would be in the city itself. If your rural, not a chance. How warm can it get/how nice can the weather be? Halifax is in a moderate climate, as is most of Nova Scotia, by virtue of the Atlantic Ocean. It doesn't get to hot in the summer (33C tops normally, with an average of like 25-30), and it doesn't get to cold in the winter (maybe -15 on a super cold day, with -20 to -25 windchill's at its worst). Mostly we just have wind. The really cold season is only a little over a month long though (Feb). Are there any majorly different laws? Well, our gun laws are quite different, as are our sentances, but by an large, whats illegal in one country is illegal in the other. I expect that Canada has more laws overall, since we aren't quite as gung-[garden tool] about our freedoms and rights. How different are prices? Gas is more expensive, as are books. On the whole, all the really cheep stuff (talking like $6 and under) is likely to be more expensive here because out lowest bill is the $5, not the $1, which means (through process I don't care to explain here) that our base 'cheep' price (the what can I buy with 1 bill) is 5x what yours is. Actually, on the whole I think Canada is a bit more expensive, but I'm sure we do have things that are cheeper. Also, internet piracy is much bigger in Canada, so the point where we pirate about as much as the USA with a 10th of the people. Do you make more money on average, the same, less? Minimum wage is $10 in this privince, and I think we are on the low end. Not sure what you guys are at. I've heard the people are friendlier, true? I find so yes. Your more likely to at least find someone who will hold the door open for you, or let you in to traffic here. But then, I have met some really nice Americans too, so this would be better annswered by people who have actually lived in both countries. How is Canada's economy? MUCH better than yours right now, and easily one of the best in the Developed world at the moment (at least in terms of stability and growth). Our banking system is considerably different, with very few banks, almost all of which are National, and there are laws that protect your money, so confidence in our banks is very high. Most of our current economic troubles are coming from simple fear, and repercussions of our close ties to the USA, and to a lesser extent, Europe, both of which are failing compared to us. Anything I can get easily in Amurrika that I can't get in Canada? Tanerite, thermite, guns, anarchist literature (maybe). Seriously though, yes there is more 'stuff' in the states, and bringing it into Canada is not fun. But in terms of your basic needs and usual luxuries, you would be unlikely to ever need to do this. Most of the stuff you would need to go to the states for would probably be in the medical field, since there is a bit more freedom both in terms of medications and medical procedures than we have here. How hard is the switch to metric? The metric system is very simple. Its a base 10 system, based on water for the most part (mass, distance, volume and temperature are all based on water. 1 gram is 1ml or 1 cm^3 of water. 0C is the freezing point, 100C is the boiling point). All our units convert nicely to each other, which makes the math much easier. From a practical point of view, the hardest one is going to be temperature, but I expect after a few months to a year, it will be second nature to you. Our speed limits are pretty close, so speed shouldn't be an issue (100km/hr, which is the slowest of the highway speeds is a little over 55mph). How is the internet? MUCH better on average. I think the pricing is similar, but almost the entire country has pretty decent internet service (at least the inhabited part, not the 90% of the country that has next to nothing but trees). There is almost no place that I know of that would be limited to dial up, and Halifax seems to be going to fiber optic as a new possibility (I think Aliant is laying the wires out starting this year). Am I okay not knowing any french beyond very basic stuff? Quebec is almost entirely French, except the city of Montreal which is by and large bilingual. However, Quebec has vastly different legal system and culture compared to the rest of the country. New Brunswick is officially bi-lingual. Every other province and territory is officially English. The only impact is going to be jobs. The federal government practically requires bi-bilingualism in most positions now, as do some service industries (most notably the airlines). I don't know french beyond "I don't speak speak french", and a few random words, and I get along just dandy. Are there any rights I have in the US that I don't have in Canada, or vice versa? I think most of the rights are about the same (except the right to weapons, which we don't have). In general, we are less worried about pushing it and making sure they exist. Where Americans seem to focus on it (at least some do), to the point where it seems really ingrained in your culture, our culture would have a larger focus on just obeying the law, and not being [wagon] just because we can. As a final note, I want to touch on religion. Roman Catholic is our largest religion, followed closely by one you guys don't have called the United Church of Canada (and sometimes the 'thinkers religion'). I only bring this up, because the UCC is about as far away as you can get from fundamentalist religion (most notably in terms of the Bible being considered a story book, not the literal word of God, that exists merely as a guide). On the whole, religion in Canada is a lot less extreme in any direction. There are lest fundamentalists, our Atheists aren't as in your face, etc. and it plays a smaller role in our politics.
  2. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a bad thing, or just an idiosyncrasy, but one of my 3 big things in RuneScape is costumes. Unless I am in high end combat, I will routinely sacrifice some functionality in favor of an ensemble that compliments itself. I also have an incredible amount of bank space dedicated to costume pieces (both actuall costumes, and just items I like the look of), which I know is pointless because there are actually only a couple outfits I ever wear to in game parties. Well equipped for a theme party though if one of those ever crops up.
  3. I fit into the young adult category now, and I guess my first response when I think about some of what goes on in game and the players ages, it seems wrong. Then I think about what I was like at that age, and realize that yeah, its about right. Besides, I play another game that would seem to be populated by nothing but obnoxious, horny, racist, homophobic teenagers, so compared to that game, RuneScape might as well be populated entirely by Nuns.
  4. I never thought about it before, but if the pmod was careful not to make the threats, and act only as enforcement, there is a lot of potential to abuse their crown and very little chance of getting caught, as long as they are able to justify their mutes. What you want to do, is know a pmod you can trust, and tell them what happened. Ideally, you want the name of the mod who performed the mute, but I suspect they can work with the clan name, and just hand that over to Jagex who could then look at which pmods are in the clan, and go more in depth into the circumstances surrounding their mutes. No one hates corrupt pmods more than the legit pmods do, and they know how to conduct one hell of a witch hunt if enough of them get too excited. My point being, if you know a clean mod, you can probably assume they will do everything that they can to make sure Jagex does something. I wish Jagex would make up their minds with scamming. Even the pmods don't know what the deal is, and if nothing else, at least they should know. Also, I kind of wish Jagex would bar them from participating in these kinds of clans.
  5. I think this might be my favorite quest ever. Teh puzzles were a bit easy, but they were there. I got a lot of laughs out of it, and it didn't have any epic fights in it (not a fan of quest fighting).
  6. For me, after nearly 7 years of not being clanned, I finally decided to try one out. It's a lot of fun, and in the space of a little over 4 months, I am an Event Co-Ordinator, Clan moderator, and offered a leader position (turned down for the time being, pending clan growth). My point is that I have excelled in a new environment, and made some new friends. The clan has also gotten me out of my shell so to speak, getting me to leave behind my life of just killing things I can handle with enhanced excal and a bunyip, and into the world of GWD and Corporeal Beast. The other EC is working with me so that we can both get 80 dunge, and chaotic weaponry, something I would never have undertaken alone. So on that front, I am having the best time in the game I have had in probably the last couple years. I have a great circle of new friends (minus the the ones who bot, which the clan actively works to find and remove), I am succeding at new things, and yet there are problems. In my older circle of friends, while I was always in the midrange of my friends list highscores, I was normally on top of just about everyone I talked to on a regular basis. The clan on the hand, has several very successful players, in terms of levels and wealth. It has somewhat detracted from my own accomplishments in a way. It's also inspired me to go after some of my goals, get a few more 99's and whatnot, which has also forced me into the position of needing far more money than I have or can quickly come up with. I guess its true that you can never have enough (which becomes a problem if you ever have everything). For me getting into clans has highlighted to me that which I have yet to obtain, but also motivates me to pursue things.
  7. Part of the problem is the time it takes to perform a roll back. I believe the last one took around 2 hours before the game could be booted up again, and with the game growing larger by the day, they will only take longer and longer each time (and they don't know how long unless they actually do it). The damage done to the game, as determined within minutes of the bugs discovery, would have to be enough for whoever was in charge to warrant shutting down the game for so long. So maybe they didn't think it was worth the cost, or maybe they had bad information, and by the time they did a full damage assessment, it was too late to be worth performing a roll back. As for conspiracy theories, there are enough confirmed problems with the game without getting into this kind of thing. If there are shady doings in Jagex, let them sort it. We already have things like bots and RWT that we know exists, without losing sleep over something else.
  8. First off, there would be a [cabbage] storm of craptacular proportions if Jagex went back on that policy now. Nothing short of a retroactive reimbursement going back to '01 would be able to prevent that, and for good reason. It would be amazingly unfair to everyone who didn't get their compensation. Secondly, Jagex puts monumental efforts into account security. If there is one thing I will stand by them on, its that they have done or tried to do everything humanly possible to ensure accounts don't get hacked, including an offer to subsidize isolated random key generator devices that would have made accounts 100% secure to everything short of stealing the generator itself, and the community spat in Jagex face for it. I believe the account in question was compromised when enough information was gathered to crack its recovery questions, something that shouldn't be possible to do (the best recoveries are strong passwords unrelated to the questions). Players really do have a pretty big part to play in keeping their account secure, and it goes way beyond a good anti virus program and avoiding sketchy RS related sites. Everything that stands between people and access to your account needs to be strong. Things like passwords, recoveries, email security if that's tied in, not using public computers, not using unsecured or, for the extra paranoid, WEP encrypted wireless (WEP can be cracked without resorting to pass guessing). You have to make sure no one ever sees you type in your pass, make sure that you never tell it to anyone or share your account. Don't log into runescape with a mobile device, its security is probably no where near up to par with your PC. I would much rather Jagex put their time into banning things like macros than working on returning all the lost stuff resulting from hijacking, and I applaud their efforts to try and take real world action against people who do this sort of thing.
  9. The Godswords only ever had niche uses anyways. Mostly pvp, though the ZGS found some love by people in one of the GWD boss rooms, and the SGS has uses for slayer. However in training the whip and SS still reign supreme for DPS in most pvm situations of all the non degrading weapons (ZS too but its controlled), and that hasn't changed. We will probably see chaotic used for general training now, but the whip and SS that will be outdated there, since the GS's were never king of training anyways. Just big hits.
  10. Well, since summoning became a no go (it would be better than normal, but not enough for me to go get more charms or pass up other opportunities) I had to make other plans. I have decided I will train my favorite skill, construction. This is because I haven't trained it in a while, and because my best RS friends caught up to my con level, so I need to pull ahead again. I spent 4m on 5 oak planks. From what I remember about training, that should be enough for 3 hours of strait oak door making (actually I would only need 720 at 4 doors per minute, so I think I went a bit overboard). I might train for even longer than that, though if I go much longer I would be better off going back to clay tools. Then again, it will be nice not needing hammers so I might go longer. Last time, I did summoning then went on to firemaking and fletching which I needed for enhanced excalibur (seers hard diary). I have that now, so whenever I decide I have had enough construction, I will move onto training attack which will be my next 99. Oh, and I will be growing maple trees to check on bonus xp day right at the beginning. I did that last time too.
  11. My current top 5. I am using the green one right now.
  12. On the plus side, most of the people who used the forums before we're the sort of people you wanted to strangle through the internet with your hands while kicking them in the nuts (with your feet). With some misplaced optimism we can hope all the [wagon]'s leave and the people who come to replace them are less whiny.
  13. The trade limits encourage people to use the GE, and I love the GE, so that helped me. I know a few updates have annoyed me upon initial release, but I have gotten over it, and can't say I can think of any update that has actually harmed me. Nomads Requiem is probably the worst one. I really don't like these sort of mega boss fights because (a) I suck at them and (B) I begrudge spending the money. Also, seeing this as a quest has convinced me there is more like this to follow, which pretty much killed my dreams of a quest cape. Even if I did get one, I am no longer sure that I could stand the work needed to keep the ability to wear it. Basically my drive to get a quest cape is gone.
  14. My first thought is the prayer potion. I have lunar spells and a prayer book to handle poison, and those are about the only two things I ever use pots for anyways. However, when I think about it there are some times when another skill needs restoring. I would have to say the super restore is the most useful stand alone potion there is, as it is a prayer potion that can handle all those odd cases when you other stats take a hit. Playing the game as I do right now, the super restore potion is the only one I actualy need. I can use prayer to boost my skills for combat instead. Also the prayer book that cures poision consumes prayer. At the end of the day, prayer potions are actualy all I need. I ca use redemtion continuously to keep me alive shoudl I find my self in a stat draining area.
  15. Long beggining short, Norton that came on my laptop expired some time ago but was never uninstalled. I have been Running AVG as antivirus, and more recently Lavatech's Ad-Aware to provide spyware protection. Well, AVG detected a trogen in one of Norton Internet Securitys DLL files. AVG is unable to do anything about it, Windows Control Pannel uninstal locked up and wouldn't finnish, and even modifying permissions I was unable to delete the offending file manualy. I tried safe mode, but safe mode does not do uninstalls. So I deleted the sub folder with the infected file, rebooted normally and cleared the recycle bin. AVG didn't find anything, so I went ahead and upgraded to the AVG 9 full trial, which is running now. I trued uninstalling again properly, but now it gets an error as soon as it gets to the unistalling problem and freezes. Besides, I dont care why it wont work, I just need it to work. So, I do go back in safe mode and delete the whole folder? Norton seems to still have things related to it running, and AVG is not happy about it being on the system, even though it will no longer even try to scan anything. So, what should I do to remove Norton?
  16. I once did that and they actualy did go and get their real main. It was kinda funny actualy. I don't really get it either. I mean, yeah I have a second account. I made it for nostalgia purposes though. To see what my first few hours would have been like if I had known what I know now. Maybe I will do all the free quests on it one day too, but that is a small ammount of time and effort compared to my main. I figure, if I am going to put my time into making a charecter better, it migth as well be the charecter I use that I focus on. I don't really enjoy training, I just kinda enjoy the game. I would never play if there weren't chat since thats what keeps me going when I train. And I train mostly to do quests, or as justification for not trainging skills I hate that I need for a quest (for example I would rather get 99 wc'ing and a few ravens then train herblore and farming to 63 for WGS, and will let the penguin points do most of the work).
  17. Soooooo True! ...will not resist helpfully pointing out to a pmod that their crown means they are a mod :wall: Oh, and thats true about the sarcasm thing, but no one puts that much effort into it really.
  18. I have about 40-42m in my two main combat sets (full drag and guthans, with whip, fury and d sq). I know I have 3m worth of cut gems, and probably at least a mill in runes. Theres probably another mill or two in items floating around, so say bank is...45m. I have almost 10m in cash, plus about 1m in my kingdom. so 56m I guess.
  19. ...realise that sarcasm dosn't work with text unless you use sarcasm tags (because sarcasm is entirly intonation and body language, which is everything that text does not convey)
  20. I play as a female, even though I am a guy. I did it to find out how differently girls are treated. That was a year ago. Once I got used to it, I decided if I am going to stare at my charecter all day, it might as well be easy on the eyes (though wearing full dragon means even I would be hard pressed to determine gender). I dont think I'll be getting aroused by pixels anyway, and I won't object to them looking nicer.
  21. I think that at this point we can assume that the stones were either always intended as a decorations, or were related to something that never came to pass. I would severly doubt that they will ever be related to anything now. The only stone that seems to mean anything is that of the broken life rune, probably the whim of who ever created the rocks to honour the life rune that never existed with an ingame monument. The other 3 just have random symbols on them, though the spiral is on a few decorations all over runescape.
  22. I wish it told me when my account was created. More interested in that than hours, but still happy.
  23. I was expecting more days in all honesty. This is pretty cool.
  24. If its a fake, its very well done. The text at the top does not match anything currently in use, but Jagex already have several fonts on the go. Besides, if they were faking and wanted to use that style, why not use the real deal and grap the letters off the main site? There is a style like that already (All caps, but with 2 sizes) , so why that wouldn't be used does raise suspecion. As to the 'a' vs 'an' thing, its simple. The name of the monster is likely stored as "Tormented Demon" not "A Tormented Demon". Everything else would be a template, and apparently it uses 'a'. Were this to be released, they would likely fix it so that it uses 'an' where appropriate. This would not be Jagex's first gramatical error. The icons all fit what is currently in use. I don't know. I would like to know where this came from before I pass judgement. I would like to see the rest of the page too. I can't fully belive thats real, as much as I might like it to be.
  25. I didn't know I was quoted iamcool  Anyways, whether I think I have a chance or not currently means nothing anyways. I don't want ot be in an affair, so I have no interest being more than friends until shes not in a relationship. A guy can dream though. At least I now know that shes interested in being friends at a minimum, and I already made peace with the fact that friends a very possible ending outcome.
