Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
I will either insist someone else lead, if the activity is not an area of expertise for me, or else I will forcefully take over until someone can prove to me that they know more about what we're doing than I do. My usual MO is to be the thought person and delegate all the actual work to other people to free me up for more thinking. In group work, I generally get along best with average people, rather than the smartest people, because its not uncommon for me to get into long drawn out debates with people who can rival me, but hold different opinions. Which is another way of saying I prefer to be paired up with the smartest people who will yield to my thinking and do what I want. I generally prefer to work solo though on projects.

Things That Make You Smile :)
Does he make you an offer on hamburgers and hot dogs you can't refuse? I've never actually bought anything from him or talked to him myself, mostly because I can't eat buns so I don't normally go in it for that sort of thing. I just like seeing him there for some reason, I think because he seems to be really happy with what he is doing, even though he obviously doesn't have a lot of money. Same deal with a particular guy who at least used to play the saxaphone on a street corner. My sax teacher was actually his teacher as well, and he just did/does it for fun (I expect to see him again once its a bit warmer out). His name is Buba I think (or at least that's what my teacher calls him), and always does a nice jazz getup. White suit, hat and sunglasses, and you can tell from listening to him that he just loves what he's doing (I think he's retired). Happy people make me happy.

Things That Make You Smile :)
There is a guy who sells hot dogs and hamburgers on my university campus (the Dawg Father), and seeing him always makes me smile for some reason. He's a very boisterous person, always talking to someone, and I think he is in the same place every day. One of the constants of university life.

Today...
So its that time of year again when this house joins the student housing market. I know I have 2 returning, and 2 leaving, and 1 who doesn't know. Next time I see him I need to tell him that I am showing his room and ommiting the smallest one from the tour, and he has the largest room in the house (not the nicest though imo). See if that helps him make up his mind because all I need is 2 people with checks who want to sign, and he gets the small room. The downside is that since I do all the showings (since I live here), I am now the contact person <_< On the plus side, if I somehow ever got into real estate, its not bad experience. I need to try and make the house appeal to people, and judge whether or not I can live with them for a year (I still prefer this to having friends move in. I consider that to be a really good way to either not enjoy living here or ruin friendships).

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
This is what happens when I don't think things through when I'm a bit tired. Pheromones are genetic, and while looks are based on genetics, I doubt our minds can decode them. Looks are probably more a matter of established normality, and observational techniques. So your mind observes all these people that it knows/believes are healthy, and builds a profile of what healthy people look like, I want someone that matches these criteria. And once that criteria is built, it probably never changes. You've also got characteristics like height, which serve a survival imperative. Most guys prefer a girl who is shorter than they are, probably because on some level they percieve a tall girl as a threat or challenge to their masculinity. Most girls prefer a guy who is taller than they are, because they will probably make a better protector. Fetishes and things like chubby chasers are a lot harder to explain. Also, since this is going to come up, a discussion of fetishes would not be appropriate for public discussion. That said, Assume has a fascinating video that might explain foot fetishes, and if you want to see what he has I don't think he would mind you pm'ing him for it so he can share it that way. As long as it doesn't lead to a fetish discussion here, I can't see it being a problem. It also leads to the possibility of a few of us having a discussion in private that we wouldn't allow here in OT (so if people start asking assume for the video, he could add everyone who asks into the same conversation. I've already seen it, but if that happens I wouldn't mind joining in because I think its an interesting conversation topic).

Things That Make You Smile :)
I loved the slow birds the word gag. Callback jokes make me smile (if I've been following a show and actually get it). If we are going to do family guy songs (that make you smile), this would be my pick. [hide] [/hide] Walking out the door in the morning when its sunny and warm.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
I assume that's a general question. I think that the mind uses physical features as a sort of basic dna scanner, looking for defects which would suggest a defect with the genetic code, signifying an ideal (or not) mate. An example of this could be facial symmetry, where symmetry is desirable. Also, things like weight can signify other things. For weight, heavy used to mean you we're rich enough to actually eat, where now it suggest that your not rich enough to eat healthy (and yes, that is horrifically oversimplifying something that has myriad causes, many of them beyond anyone's control). So I figure that contained within our genetic code is essentially a set criteria that your dna wants to combine with, and combined with things like pheromones and behavior, your mind has to use physical features and appearance to gauge health and genetic compatibility to try and find the ideal mate. And, being as tactful as possible given the example I have in mind, for people who want an example of being able to literally see a genetic problem, there are certain mental illnesses (genetically based ones) that also affect facial structure, allowing the condition to be identified simply by looking at them.

Phone numbers spoofed to steal RS pins
I honestly don't know how it works, since I have never used that service, so I am just guessing based on what they did in the article. Spoofing only works when you call them. To actually intercept a call to another phone, you would either need to tap into the land line for land line phones, or for cells, you need to clone them.

Phone numbers spoofed to steal RS pins
I think it was surfpin who got spoofed, not the phone company. Surfpin probably just uses the caller id to know who to send the bill too, which unfortunately relies on the originating phone to be honest about its number. The easiest way I can think of to fix it would be to have surfpin text a pin back to the number listed in the caller id, and then have to use that pin to make the purchase. That way if you spoof a number, the confirmation pin goes back to the legitimate phone. To get around it, you would need to actually clone a phone, which is considerably harder to do, especially on a large scale. Alternatively, for things like landlines you would actually need to just have to set it up so you make the purchase, and then when you hang up surfpin calls you back so you can verify it that way.

Grand Exchange: Bulk Sales/Queuing
It's an interesting idea. Sy has a valid point though in that this would also effectively give people a whole lot of extra slots to sell items with by allowing 168 different items to be sold at the same time, if someone we're to fill their inventory up with different item stacks (using notes) each time. However, being able to sell multiple items at once with a global price adjustment would certainly be handy for some tasks. So a proposed change: A sell multiple option that allows you to select as many item (stacks) as you have free slots available in the GE, and to either set a distinct price for each one, or to set a global percentage change (so a 7 row column listing the price change option for each item individually, and a global percentage change option). This would preserve the concept of selling items a bit faster (and more importantly, just less clicking), without allowing people to sell a third of their bank off at once.

Today...
Wen't to see Cabin in the Woods tonight. Possibly not my best idea ever. I enjoyed the movie enough, but now I'm a bit leery of the idea of sleep. I'd just as well assume never have a dream that tries to replicate pretty much anything from the movie, though in the end I am not going to have any say in the matter, and the less tired I am, the less likely I am to have nightmares. The TV might be up an extra notch tonight though in the hopes of having it help influence my dreams for a while. Its not tonight I have to worry about anyway, and probably not tomorrow. Its the day after tomorrow that I am most likely to get movie nightmares I think.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
I guess it comes down to whether you are willing to give her another chance or not. Your going to have the best idea if she is sincerely sorry, or if she is just trying to manipulate you into letter her back into your life. If you don't have any other pressing social engagements, I would probably be willing to give them another shot if I still wanted to be with them. But its a one chance deal. You don't get to make this mistake more than once.

What constitutes a 'true friend'?
I was going to wait and try to think up a proper post, but I think you nailed it here, especially pointing out that a true friend isn't always a best friend. The simplest way I would put it is a true friend is a friend who cares more about your best interests than the friendship itself.
-
What constitutes a 'true friend'?
A better way might be to put it that a true friend knows when to be honest, and when not to be (@ the complimenting thing). Sometimes you need to feel good about yourself, and sometimes you need the truth (not that the two need to be mutually exclusive).

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
As a point of interest, the major health problems associated with caffiene would be stressing your heart out and de-calcification of your bones. By the time either of these become an actual issue it will be too late because you'll know its a problem either when you have a heart attack or your bones break. As far as drugs go though, you could do a lot worse. Apparently its very hard for me to sleep without my bite plate now that I'm used to it, and I forgot to bring it with me, so now I can't sleep <_<

Today...
I got myself Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (and I'm posting here because there is no point making a thread for an old game so I can talk to myself on it). Much improved over the Rainbow Six 3 which I have for (classic) xbox. Just a fantastic tactical simulator for anyone who ever wanted to play a game where you take on the role of SWAT (except like delta forces intense). I haven't played the newest MW and whatever its counterpart is (the other one that looks like the same game), but my impression from whichever ones I have played (MW or that other one, not sure) is that they are more running around shooting, where Vegas is all about the sneaking, finding cover, and tactical use of weapons to get the most out of them (because in this one I am up against people who also have night and thermal vision same as me, so you have to pick the right times to use certain things). I also love the snake cam for peeking under doors and the team AI. For the second Vegas your two team mates cover each other as they advance, so if you do it right everyone is doing leapfrog advancements so you don't all get shot. And the new health system (as opposed to the much older six 3) allows for a metric [bleep] tonne of enemies (you have a very small amount of health, but it regenerates quickly when your not being shot instead of being able to take like 6 shots max if your lucky for an entire level). And being an older game, its like $10 on steam now

question about the 'harpies'
Just to be clear, I think this is the definition we are supposed to be using for harpie (not to be confused with harpy): Or in other words, female trolls that only attack men.

Today...
People use Nautical miles to mess with everyone else, and because if your already using a totally arbitrary measuring system, why not make it that much more confusing. Though to be fair, its one minute of arc of latitude which is handy when your dealing with sea charts. Being an international unit, its actually measured in metric at exactly 1852 meters ( :wall: ) or 1.15 miles. I assume aircraft use knots for the same reason ships do. It's just easier using a unit that matches the system your maps use.

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
I'm not convinced that steam is actually installing punkbuster for my latest game (its been like 20 minutes now), and my annoyance is compounded by the fact that I will almost certainly never use its multiplayer anyway, if only because the game is 6 years old and everyone if playing TF and MW now (Rainbow Six: Vegas 2). Perhaps the other game downloading is blocking it, since steam can't seem to multi task (it only downloads one at a time, and it pauses the download as soon as it launches a game for some reason). EDIT: Guess the game just needed to be restarted so I've been waiting for a long time for no reason

question about the 'harpies'
Interesting. I didn't think we had enough female users to form a flock in the first place :P

question about the 'harpies'
I don't generally venture into blogscape, so forgive me if I am out of the loop... We have flocks of female users attacking the males in blogscape?

how do I increase my FPS?
The easiest and most effective way to increase your fps would be to use a smaller screen. A 1280x720 vs a 1600x900 for example would certainly run faster. The frame rate issues seem to be widespread compatibility issues, so hardware specs tend to be a very poor predictor of performance right now. stlboy07's suggestions also work. You'll probably get the best performance on open GL or Direct X (test them to see which runs faster) and stripping down all the extras like water effects and textures. Also, even if you still want a big screen, select a fixed screen size. Resizeable is the worst in terms of frame rate (fullscreen is also faster).
