UPDATE: Well, go figure. I don't know what happened, but my signature is behaving properly again on both FireFox versions. If a Tip.It Admin (or more) had a hand in fixing it, then you have my thanks as well. And Tecmaster, thank you for relaying the word about the issue. I do truly appreciate it. |^_^| I'll be certain to post back if this starts again. For now, I consider this thread as done at this time. :shades: ~D. V. "Case Closed, I hope..." Devnull

UPDATE: This has apparently also jammed the caching for images in my older FF2-series browser @ 43 QP, as it shows all the stats on the version over here but doesn't indicate my Str. Level falling off the highscores. The tweaked 44 QP version appears as it should be, although I wish Jagex was transmitting stat info for non-ranked stats (which were showing in the Lite Feed yesterday) anyway. As of 11 PM last night, the FF3-series browser on the other system where I began this thread was still showing the stats all missing @ 43 QP. It did, however, view the 44 QP version properly. I hope this information will help in fixing what's gone wrong. Right now, I'm sitting on a keg of mentally stunned. ~D. V. "I'm being pwned by a WTF moment, aren't I?" Devnull

Plagued with crashing and freezing problems
D. V. Devnull replied to Peronix's topic in Tech and Computers
Peronix, I suggest you check your attached devices and system driver files for them, as well as device driver files for the motherboard chipset and such. It sounds to me like one of them isn't getting along with your computer. If it isn't that, then I would seriously check your system with an alternate Power Supply if I were you. Power glitches are rare things, but if one happened without causing your computer to totally shut off, it could result in some of what you're seeing and/or be causing some physical damage in your computer. BTW, you do have your PC backed by a UPS with proper surge protection, right? :| ~D. V. "Can't blame you for being bewildered..." Devnull -
Hello, Tip.It Website Crew... Earlier today, the display of stats in my Tip.It Dynamic Signature decided to simply up and quit on me. As of when I'm posting this, it's showing all "1"s for skills, CB Lvl 3, and "0" total level. I checked my "Lite Version" feed and all of my stats are still there, so I'm thinking something just randomly blew up by accident in Tip.It's systems? :ohnoes: Also, is the display of a given skill level totally dependent on the presence of a ranking for the skill level? If so, you might wish to make it so that it will not require a ranking and show the level anyway, even if it doesn't physically show on the RS Official High Scores. It's really weird knowing I have 67 Strength, and not seeing it on my Stat Siggy just because I decided to forget about combat for a while... :-k ~D. V. "Help! My siggy's not working!" Devnull (p.s.: If this is in the wrong forum, please move it... Although I think I got it right this time...)

Starr, before trying anything else, try getting RuneScape to launch in Safe Mode by holding the "S" key on your keyboard from the moment it shows "Checking for Updates", and don't let go until it shows the login screen. You might have to hold the backspace key for a moment to clear the Username field on the login after that, but holding the "S" key during the RS Java Applet's startup will bypass the enhanced renderers (along with a little bit else, I think) and provide you with a possible chance of logging in and getting running once more. ;) Hopefully the above won't fail, but if it does, then like others have said, do try a different browser. There's a small (but somewhat unlikely) chance of a bad interaction with Internet Explorer. If that also fails and totally won't work for you, then you can also try  this post by me about increasing the RAM that Java is allowed to use, which may provide enough RAM to prevent crashes. :) As for trying hardware rendering, your system's graphics prevents that. For the desktop, you'd have to get a semi-nice ATI/AMD Radeon HD card or a recent NVidia card. Your laptop's out of luck in this department as you can't modify its' hardware. :? Also, backleveling Java before Version 6u10+ is out thanks to those who make browsers unless you wish to try an earlier browser version as well. (However, I admit I've got a good combo with FF 2.0.0.6 + Java 6u6 here.) I normally don't recommend this approach either as it requires being rather on top of your computer when you're using it, and some considerable work (~6 hours when done properly to retain security and have some nice features as well... *gulp*) during installation. This would be an extreme last-resort move anyway. :o Which reminds me, you'll want to upgrade your desktop system's RAM to at least 1.5 GB, if you can still do so. 1 GB is lacking when it comes to Windows XP or later, combined with RuneScape running. :geek: Good luck on getting back up and running normally, because this is going to take a little trial and error to fix. The safest methods of the ones above are the 'Safe Mode Trigger' and the 'Java RAM Increase', but I've provided the other options and info to you because I hate seeing someone down due to a bad interaction with the RuneScape Java Applet. ~D. Agreed 100%. Ily Pere. <3: They were jealous that they couldn't have the cape so they voted for a crappy design. Wow, that actually makes sense now that I think about it. I'm a bit annoyed by it too, people. What came out as the result was nothing like what I chose. Heck... Go to page 60 at [qfc]198-199-18-62555016[/qfc] if you really wish to know what I picked. I wish I could link you square onto the post. -.- BTW, if the Veteran Cape is purely cosmetic, count me completely out for wearing it. I prefer my capes with useful stats to keep my little self alive, thanks. Also, if it isn't open to F2P, don't expect to ever see me wearing one. :shame: ~D. V. 15-Apr-2011 - Guaranteed Content Poll: Boss Rematch?
D. V. Devnull replied to BloodAngel's topic in General Discussion
Told ya! Next poll, Elvarg! :P ... Yes, I tossed her my vote, seeing as I would like to know what the new area for fighting her looks like. :-s BTW, I feel like the discussion of poll #2 should have been in another thread. Putting it here really mashes stuff together. :( ~D. V. "My vote for #2 went to Elvarg... what about you?" Devnull -
Hi, Starr, thanks for the info and the log. Before I even think of trying to give you a list of available options, I need one more thing (which I only just realized that I needed, sorry) that I didn't think to ask you for the last time. What are your system's specs, such as cpu, ram, graphics, browser version, etc.? Without these, I could accidentally throw you a workaround option that you simply can't use. If there's one thing I won't do, that's dead-ending a fellow RS player, even by accident. :geek: I'll look forward to hearing back from you, seeing as it would be good to at least get you out of your current deadlock. I'm pretty sure that, like myself, you don't like having to wait for Jagex to dig theirselves out of a ditch? :) ~D. V. "Still missing a needed piece of info..." Devnull

Thanks for the QFC number. I was able to tag both it and it's connected thread onto my RS Profile so I can come and lend a hand later. New Super Moderator
D. V. Devnull replied to tripsis's topic in Announcements, Rules and Security Warnings!
Huh... Go figure... I don't know whether to fire a nuke at them, or give them a big cake. :P Congratulations, Y_Guy, on getting the Super Mod position. They don't give those out often. ~D. V. "My congrats come with humor..." Devnull -
NikolaiH, so I can see it for myself, could I have a RSOF QFC to go with that please? The last one of those which I knew about was a P2P-only (w99) meetup, which prevented me from getting in on it as I'm a 100% F2P Player. Very honestly, I would like to get in on one of these events, but I can't do that if/when they're always starting on P2P worlds. :( ~D. V. "Please show me where?" Devnull

What? I really don't, but I'm sorry you think all fathers (or only fathers) deliberately instill fear in an attempt to control. Whoops... I knew I forgot to put something (but couldn't remember what, at the time) about exceptions, like yourself Nyo, into that other post of mine. Really didn't mean to just up and leave it like that, sorry. #-o ~D. V. "D'OH!" Devnull

Very nice catch, Mercifull! I'm just curious, were you using the 'Orb of Oculus' (an item that I've honestly never taken the time to study at all in RuneScape) to center on the Summer Elemental that had become stuck? That was just awesome, seeing all those bots insta-pwnt by just one NPC. BTW, you can add the Mining Guild and Yew Trees to the bot-loaded, totally overrun zones. F2P is most definitely feeling the hurt as well. If possible, we really could use a few Jmods showing up at those spots, if you and/or anyone else who reads this thread knows of any to call in. All of us should be doing whatever we can to reverse bots causing the return of Free Trade to have a bad name. ~D. V. "If only we could end those bots... What a treat that would be." Devnull

I wish it were like FunOrb as well, so consider me a supporter. I also think some of those player names are just too hard to lock onto and type out properly, and that there should just be clickable options. :? ~D. V. "Begone, ugly type-in box! Come forth, right-click option!" Devnull

runeprincess, you're finding RS is blocked? I would bet this malware has altered your hosts file, and/or has separate blocking parameters for Browser, Java, Game Clients, and everything else. That's just an FYI in the event that you're not going to have any 'words' with your dad about this. However, if I were you, I would only take this action automatically in addition to what I've said below in the event that the computer is honestly yours. :shades: Honestly, though, I know and understand how you're feeling. Your dad has violated the trust that should always be present between a father and his daughter. While I can understand that it seems like cloak-and-dagger gray-hat tactics seem like the best approach, they're not. You really need to pull together a dose of maturity and come down on your dad double-footed with your choice of words in a manner that he can't defend his stance on the matter, and your mom (even as much as she loves him) would back you up on. Just watch out, though, because we all know how male parents just love using that "Control By Fear" card when they think it's their only option left. You'll have to have a choice of words ready that will make him understand trying to pull that is very useless and that physical blockades will only make the matter worse. Parents have a right to some influence over their childrens' lives, but not to treating their children like prison inmates. :ugeek: ~Mr. D. V. "Expose your dad's wrongdoing for what it is!" Devnull

I can tell you it ain't my Java version at fault with 100% certainty. Got another system sitting near this one that I also use to play RuneScape from, and it's running the same Java Version with a slightly older FireFox. I'll admit the big difference is probably the AGP cards in the two systems, an ATI Radeon 9200 (which can't run a recent enough ATI Catalyst Driver) versus an ATI-based XFX Radeon HD 4650. However, the problem is in Jagex's 'Hardware Graphics Acceleration' (HGA) code, as well as their lack of separation from their 'File I/O' code, and the reaction it has with the older of those two cards. The newer of the two cards with the older Java version and browser pretty much punches a hole (I'm thinking the size of a mountain, but I exaggerate sometimes...) in your statement about having to have a fully-updated Java Version. (BTW, seeing as they're both AGP and that's going out-of-style, you know I can't upgrade the one in trouble due to lack of PCI-E slots. Hell, I don't know what Starr's specs are, but they might be stuck in the same ditch as me.) :| Now, on the more serious side, I can accept a lack of new feature rendering, just as long as they come without those crashes. (BTW, Jagex's coding failures, and allowing this level of unsafe crashes, is what resulted in my hot-tempered hand-signing two posts back.) Like I said at the end of my previous post in my hand-signing, "Render from the basics up, Never the other way around!" Basically, have detection that prevents usage of certain features on older video cards, but design it so that it isn't something that causes a performance impact and/or crash to have blocked completely off. Good code doesn't predicate things on heavy minimums, it works without them at first and only tries to use them in the event that it is detected as possible to do so. For comparison, look at UT'99s' engine, starts at the floor and uses more features if it can find them available. Absolutely elegant, in my opinion. The same really could (and honestly should) have been done here by Jagex's "Engine Team" with the RuneScape Java Applet. Jagex's failure here makes me *facewall*... :wall: Now, again, pardon me while I go back to waiting on Starr's response with that all-important error log. :-w ~D. V. "Again, it's simply not Java's fault... How hard is it to put that across?" Devnull (p.s.: The next system to be built here already has PCI-E in its' intended specs, so no use trying to call me out on that one.)

Chaos Talisman/Altar --- Sure, as enough resources for this are all in F2P. The Wildy more-or-less balances for possible issues with bots and such. Further, this is the only altar of the three in question that could safely be changed to Normal Rune Essence from its' Pure Essence variant. Law Talisman/Altar --- Maybe, seeing as most F2P'ers would be forced to bank everything first. Yes, including their Cabbage-Porting "Exp. Ring 3"... This one could be considered a touchy situation, at best. Beware serious botting here, however. :-k Nature Talisman/Altar --- Unless Jagex was going to re-balance things here, it would get out of hand, seeing as poison isn't part of the F2P game system. Botting would run wild on this route, so I think this would be extremely unlikely to happen. :notalk: There is, however, one stopper with this whole mess... Pure Rune Essence. Unless Jagex was willing to allow one or more of these altars to once-again use Normal Rune Essence, F2P wouldn't be able to do anything at all. So there's one for all of us to think very seriously about, as there would be a definite impact caused by changes to any of these. :geek: ~D. V. "If you wish for change, beware the possible impact!" Yes, because the fault for any client-side crash automatically resides with Jagex, who should be able to guarantee that their software runs flawlessly on every one of the hundred million machines that have tried. Seriously, Y_Guy, if Jagex weren't letting their 'Hardware Graphics Acceleration' ('HGA' for short) code do something that has a negative effect against their own 'File I/O' code, whose effect shows severely on older systems, then I wouldn't be pinning the fault against Jagex. (I've actually got a few hs_err_pid logs of my own, thanks to such.) As it stands, I'm personally now sitting with one PC that can't run RuneScape in any mode but Safe Mode without landing in a situation where it can't garbage collect properly after the RS Applet shuts down, simply because the HGA code isn't being handled properly by the Jagex-made RS Applet. Further, Jagex deprecated OpenGL 1.3 (generally the best point to initialize HGA from, IMHO) and DirectX 9a/9b (possibly DX 9c as well now, seeing as this PC here can't use either HGA mode) as to what they support, which is now causing havoc (such as crashes, failed starts, and total inability to use renderers including the "Software" Renderer) for more people than they intended. <_< Yeah, yeah, I know about the whole "For Progress!" thing that's going around. Jagex could still have done better with their code and bleed-over avoidance, and even designed their renderers to scale up from a lesser point. That would have enabled older systems to have the rendering mode minus all the nice effects that later cards can use, and still allow the later cards to render everything they can. And yes, it would have as equally ensured that their code could run flawlessly... Jagex's so-called "Engine Team" just wasn't willing to put themselves out to spend the time/work to do it right. Now, pardon me while I go back to waiting for an answer from Starr about their issue. -.- ~D. Starr, could you please post up a copy of the most recent 'hs_err_pid' file that you got? It would help greatly in determining where the fault happens to exist at. ~D. V. 15-Apr-2011 - Guaranteed Content Poll: Boss Rematch?
D. V. Devnull replied to BloodAngel's topic in General Discussion
He'll most likely be in the next poll. All the beasties in this one seem to be level 40ish and under. Elvarg is lvl 83. I second this. Jagex did say they were running multiple polls in a series. So hang onto your hat, NJE03, and look forward to the next poll! ~D. V. "Look ahead, the future's bright!" Devnull -
15-Apr-2011 - Guaranteed Content Poll: Boss Rematch?
D. V. Devnull replied to BloodAngel's topic in General Discussion
My vote's in... I can't remember some of those (now ancient, for me anyway) boss fights, so I picked one of the bosses that I forgot how I killed. Personally, I hope Jagex makes quests (and not just the boss fights) repeatable for memory purposes one of these days, as well as to be able to compare the old with the new. I'm really surprised they didn't try to simply just do this already, as there are people who are already banging their metal objects for such. ~D. V.
